I really like that vice. I just push it to the back of the table when I don't need it or I can slide it out of the clamp or I can remove the clamp completely if I really need the table space for big flat items but most of the time it works for all the small parts that I want to drill. Regards, Mark
@tates11
@tates11 Жыл бұрын
You dont always need a spindexer on a surface grinder, typically a vee block is used which can also be used on a belt grinder. There is no real need for a concave grind, it reduces the contact area on the moving jaw. Grinding the flat is to increase the surface area on the moving jaw to prevent damage to the jaw and transfer to future parts. If you want to leave the ball round it can be sat in a small piece of tube, nut or on a washer to protect the moving jaw. Two washers will also protect the part and still swivel to align Can the flat on the ball sit on the top of a machinist jack to give a point contact to the part? If the jack has a vee or two in the top then the ball can sit in them and give a self aligning pivoting pad for the part to sit on. Using a full ball on a washer will do the same.
@Preso58
@Preso58 Жыл бұрын
All good points. I found that the concave grind was really just a way of ensuring that it wasn't convex which would be bad. Regards, Mark

Nice balls, Mark! I had to tell my wife that you were talking to her at the end, there. I swear, she has the maturity level of a thirteen year old boy sometimes. Maybe that’s why her and I get along, what with similar senses of humor and whatnot. As for the projects, film them all! I imagine that no matter how many parts your steam engine and/or locomotive builds take, the overwhelming majority of us will be here for every last minute of it. Especially if you show us your balls again! >snicker< Ok, I’ll go out in the hallway with my wife until class is over now.

You can hold that ball in a lathe, after grinding on a belt, and make small hollow in the middle with cuting wheel or sanding drum on a dremel or something simillar. That hollow do not need to be precise, just to be under the edge surface. Then go to diamond stone. And you will get the edge only contact.

Hi Mark, I enjoyed the video as always. I think my method would be to have a small block of steel with a drilled hole part way through to drop the ball into. The unmachined ball would seat on the drill point. I might even epoxy the ball into the block. You could make it on the lathe or milling machine.

The receipt was in Australian dollars. Being out here in the colonies, we pay over the top prices for everything. Most of the Stuart kits were imported from the UK and the retailers just passed on the exchange rates and the shipping charges and then took their margin as well. There is also very little competition amongst vendors. Back in the 80's there were only a handful of companies selling model engineering products. Now there are even less. Regards, Mark

Cool! I could have used one of them today while squaring up some very rough cast iron for axleboxes. I really hope you make a series doing the Rob Roy, I'd love to see how you get all the stuff around the wheels and rods accurate. I had 4 accurate axlesboxes 2 weeks ago (ie they all had the same error!), then I misread a drawing, didn't measure the old ones, and didn't use common sense so now I have to make another two which won't have the same error so no doubt some eccentric bushes are on the way too.
@Preso58

I don't know how I have gone without these tools for so long. I thought it would be difficult to buy the balls in the larger sizes but they are quite easily found on Ebay. I made the axle boxes for my Conway (by Martin Evans) from steel and then used white metal (babbit) as the bearing surface. If you can buy the white metal it's easy to just pour it in to the oversize or misshapen bore. It's nice stuff to work with. Regards, Mark

@Preso58
@Preso58 Жыл бұрын

I would have thought that leaving them spherical would ensure that the clamping force remains perpendicular to the fixed jaw (probably only good for holding relatively flat stock for blocking out). In the case of the semi-cylindrical brass stock in the video, wouldn't a ground pin be appropriate if positioned vertically against the moving jaw? I'm just thinking that the clamping forces may become oblique to the fixed jaw (racking of the moving jaw whilst tightening for example). It probably shows that I'm not a machinist but just thinking back to vectors and forces lectures about a million years ago at QIT.
@Preso58

I think the idea of adding the flat is just to make it easier to position the ball during the tightening process. It doesn't need to be very large in diameter. Regards, Mark
