The first arcade game I ever played... I was 6 or 7 and mum (bless her soul) gave me a quarter to give it a try. That's how you create a future arcade junkie! A fun game to play that was ahead of its time...it must. Be rare as you don't see it for sale often.

I have an actual home version, yes a real home version of this game. It is made by Mego and is called Mego Grand Prix and has all the same action in a huge tabletop. But I really do like the mechanical arcade versions a lot better. If you want to see what the home version looks like, search KZbin for Mego Grand Prix.

That's too cool, especially how this mechanical game would be the precursor to future racing games.

I love EM machines. I finally got a Speedway that was mostly working, I’m currently doing a sympathetic restoration one. What an amazing game. Thanks for posting this video.

The sound alone lets you know you got got your money alone in electricity, and moving parts wear and tear. The world get more artificial and it's no wonder so much joy is gone.

Me too! I got this working again with the intention of selling it, but just haven't been able to bring myself to part with it!

If you do sell it, don't plan on finding another one. Arcade collector never part with their "roadrunner" machine(s).

I played one of those in the '70s when I was 9 or 10. It was at night and so dimly lit that I couldn't tell that the car was a reflection. The sound and that moving shadow effect weren't working though.
@kimthompson66863 жыл бұрын
The game needs some work as the first lane collisions are not sending the players car off the track. Very collectible game, hope you got at least 2g’s for it.

I am really curious how the sound effects work.
@crazydoug664 жыл бұрын
There are 2 different sound effects .one for the car you are driving and one for the other cars. The sound is generated by a small electric motor that varies in speed and the sound of the motor is amplified by some very early solid state amplifiers. I am not not an ele trical engineer, but that is the basic idea.

Nothing so fancy, it's just a "Pepper's Ghost" optical illusion. That's what makes these mechanical games so magical, though; they accomplish so very much with nothing more than a sheet of glass and carefully placed lighting. Computer games don't have that same magic, because by definition a computer can achieve anything; whereas whenever you see one of *these,* it's always a surprise and a marvel that some fiendishly clever person figured out a way to do it electro-mechanically.

Remember this but i thought there were a few more lanes and I thought the counter was different. Maybe im remembering wrong or maybe there were later versions of this game. Also I remember the cars as being Aurora Cigar Box.

You can play the augmented reality version while doing so. The catch is that when a car crashes into you, you really die.
