BALLYBURN runs out brilliant winner of the Gallagher's to lead home Willie Mullins 1-2-3-4-5

Ballyburn justified his huge reputation when powering to victory for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend in the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.
The six-year-old was heralded as an Irish banker after previously slamming Supreme scorer Slade Steel by seven lengths at Leopardstown last time and duly lived up to the hype.
He was sent off as the 1-2 favourite and his backers never had a moment’s worry, as Townend enjoyed an armchair ride before kicking clear between the final two flights.
Closutton stablemates Jimmy Du Seuil and Ile Atlantique were 13 lengths and a further three and a half lengths back in second and third. Just for good measure Mullins was also responsible for Mercurey (fourth) and Predators Gold (fifth).
“It’s the first time he’s wowed me, I thought ‘wow, what a performance’ and to me that was a Champion Hurdle performance,” said Mullins.
“It was really, really spectacular. With his size, scope and pedigree our owners might decide to go chasing with him next year, I don’t know. But with that performance, he can go anywhere.
“Our team are in flying form, but we are just so sorry for Nicky Henderson that he has had to pull his good horses out. It could be us, so our sympathies go to him.”

Ballyburn he is such an animal, I’ve said it in a previous video as well but his head carriage so low is usually a sign a horse is relaxed and people get mistaken just because it isn’t so common.

i love this horse he's my favourite of all the mullins horses just love how easy he makes it look and such a unique looking runner with his super low carriage and long heavy neck and thick skulled head incredible looking animal with incredible pedigree i think he beats stateman lossiemouth all of them.

made it look easy didn't even get into 4th gear would of beat another 20 horses... but small field which is disappointing i thought this was Britain biggest day of the year and they can't throw 5 horses together?

This was the standout performance of this Festival. I spent most of the season making the case for him running here, and he fully vindicated those thoughts. I look at this performance and think what a wonderful staying novice chase prospect, and hopefully, a Gold Cup winner. The last thing on my mind would be the idea he could be a Champion Hurdle winner, or even campaigned in that direction. Look at this performance, the further he goes the better he goes. The horse doesn't want to be cut back in trip. That's why he's not unbeaten. He shouldn't entertain that trip for the rest of his career. Unfortunately, unless he's just being contrary (yet again), the trainer seems to disagree. I only hope for the horse's sake that someone can talk some sense into him. The more times you force a horse to do something that isn't natural (look at his pedigree), the more chance you have of souring him. Mullins already has two horses for the Champion Hurdle. He doesn't need to waste a season with a horse who is 6 going on 7. This horse won't win a Champion Hurdle, and if he tries it could easily jeopardise any chance of him winning a Gold Cup. That has to be the ultimate aim. Hopefully, commonsense will prevail.
