Well said. I accept the issues that come with racing because nothing is without risk, especially when you are dealing with a sport that works with half a tonne of animal on little legs. I also understand how well these animal athletes are looked after. By the way, I accept the risk to jockeys too, because as much as we accept horses falling, we should remember jockeys are injured too, sometimes in ways that change their lives. All that said, no one wants to see horses injuring themselves or worse if it can be prevented. Nothing will eliminate all risk, but I think if obvious risks can be reduced it’s better. We live in a world where the ‘ban it and abolish it’ crew have a lot to say, and each time horses die in the National their voices get louder. They conveniently forget other race meetings and other sports where there is risk to people as well as animals. I think if the National is to survive it has to move on and adapt. In the 19th century one of the fences was a brick wall. That doesn’t exist now and the race survives. I bet people said then the race was being changed too much too, but if we want to keep the spectacle of the National, man and beast working together to try to win the ultimate contest, it must evolve, or the race will go and the snowflakes in society will have won and they won’t consider what happens to those incredible animals, bred to race and win.

That edge is almost gone now. RIP Grand National.

Its a fine line.it had to change because of the horse deaths in the last 3 races people don't have to watch it if they think it's boring. No one is forcing them .I don't think the national will be banned because of the money tied up.in racing. This is all about money .I think the way people think about horses is like they do with dogs. @SW2799 I think all the Grand Nationals of the past sixty years or so are on KZbin. For a treat, look up "Red Rum"... The National Hunt is a totally different kind of racing than the dirt-track flat racing in the US. The horses start older, and have long careers, with some racing to 12 or 13 years of age. Flat races are called "bumpers", then there are hurdles over shorter distances (~ 2 miles) and jumps, and then there are steeplechases, of which the Grand National is the most extreme (2-4 miles). The US "Triple Crown" carries to an extreme the Classic tradition (for three year olds), with the more successful colts being retired to stud at the end of their three-year-old season, unlike racing in countries such as Australia, where the most famous and richest races are for stayers (1.5 - 2 miles), though middle distance racers and sprinters have made great careers, too (e.g. Winx ).

If Willie Mullins, the trainer, had not knocked the horse on Thursday when interviewed on tv more of us would have bet on him, was he afraid the bookies would lose too much of the billions they rake in every year or what ? A black mark on Mullins in my book for that advice on Thursday. Disgusted I am.

Same with El Fab at Cheltenham. How much of a kick back you think Mullins got for saving the bookies 10s/100s of millions? All a fix

Just like Humans- Never judge a Horse by how they walk or run! I liked this Horse and felt he had the best form, but I was put off by His style of running, His legs go SIDE to SIDE, like a windmill. I felt he'd fall early. I guess now the fences are nowhere as demanding as before he got away with it!

It's interesting to compare this footage with past ones, for instance the 1955, which had a similar number of starters, 30, and was also made milder - [from the commentary:] "...several jumps have been made less dangerous this year, and because of the heavy going the water jump is completely abandoned": kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKe1nmdtl52DrqM Different horses, different people.

The race is a joke now, soft easy fences, these horse's arent a patch on the 1960s, 70s and 80s horses. If you want a real testing chase, The Eider, Midlands national and Sussex national are far more of a test. A race ruined by the jockey club and bha cow towing to the rspca

Willie Mullins had only 9 runners in this years event out of 32. So over a quarter of the field. It’s ridiculous the amount of Irish runners in the English National. It should be limited to 2 horses per stable and no more than a third of the runners should be from Ireland. This year they had about 25 of the 32 runners. This event has been spoilt by the number of Irish runners.
