Ballycultra, The Ulster Folk Museum | Belfast | Northern Ireland

The Ulster Folk Museum, known as Ballycultura, is an open-air history museum in Northern Ireland with historical buildings from throughout Ireland and moved to this museum to teach about life in the early 20the century. There are shops, a pub, churches, a doctor's office, small houses, large houses - everything you would find in a village in the past. There are people there who make this an extra-special place that you can talk to and ask questions about the time. One lady gave us bread she had just baked, the doctor asked us to help him get out of the office for a little while. Different vocations and crafts are demonstrated throughout. It's a fantastic museum. There is also a farming and rural area, but we ran out of time. Nearby is the Ulster Transport Museum. It's a short train ride from the city centre of Belfast and an uphill walk from the train station. I love open-air museums that give you an idea of what 'normal' life was like in another era, and this museum does it beautifully.

We LOVE living museums like this as well. We love all the interpreters and presentations and exhibits of artifacts from times gone by. This one looked really nice. It is amazing to me that it is even possible to just dismantle buildings from 2 or 3 hundred years ago and just move them to the Folk Museum. Fascinating to see what the inside of that wall would look like. Thanks for taking us along on the tour!
