Episode Four in a series of 360° videos around the Ards Peninsula & North Down is from Ballywalter, a coastal village, with popular sandy beaches, on the east (Irish Sea) coast of the Ards Peninsula and an important part of Scottish Laird, Sir James Hamilton’s estate in 1606.
In this episode we hear about Andrew McKenzie, the Bard of Dunover, who published the first ever, single author book of Ulster-Scots poetry and read an extract from one of his poems and visit Whitkirk Cemetery, an important burial place of the first Scots to settle here.
Produced with the support of Northern Ireland Screen's Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund, over this series the Virtual Visit team are going to be tracing the legacy of Ulster-Scots settlers in this area and giving you a guided "in-person" virtual tour of the local heritage, history, stories and culture, accompanied by a local tour guide.
