There is uncertainty on when the long-standing dispute over who should ascend the throne of the Balobedu Queenship will be resolved. This after the former guardian of princess Masalanabo Modjadji - Professor Mathole Motshekga - sent a letter to high court in Pretoria, requesting to be removed as an applicant in an application to interdict a decision to appoint the princess' brother as monarch. Motshekga approached the court in 2021 after the Modjadji Royal Council decided to inaugurate the princess' brother, Prince Lekukela instead of her. Motshekga wanted the court to set the decision aside.
