Dragons are at highest level 25 maybe a boss dragon is 27. And a final boss can be 30. But Balrogs are Level 31 minimum.

Obviously fallen angels are stronger then a big animal. When Ungoliant the living embodiment of a black hole got drunk with the sap of the two trees of Valinor she attacked Melkor who is the literal devil incarnate. Melkor cried for help and Barlogs who are lesser angels compared to him came to save their master.

i always wondered how that happened though, there musta been a lot of power in those trees, but then again ungoliant might of been a valar or maiar as well, all we know as it existed before the world so im guessing ungoliant had to of been at least a maiar but that to me doesnt explain how it beat melkor, unless maybe the light that it drank from the tree was in someway the power of eru illuvitar or something and gave it a power boost. especially since melkor is the most powerful valar.

Combat isn’t the only way, or maybe even primary way, to define “great”. Tulkas easily beat Morgoth and even Fingolfin gave home trouble. Most dragons would lose to a Balrog but Glaurung would take out even Gothmog imo

i would say Balrogs would be better at commanding dragons, however i would imagine the strongest dragon demolishes the strongest balrog.

Dragons can do more damage to mass armies but a Balrog can do more direct damage to a certain thing. Balrogs are also harder to kill since they are not flesh in blood.

Smaug is officially the smallest and weakest dragon in Tolkiens recorded mythology. Could Smaug beat a fallen angel, who is immune to flame, can fly as well as he can, and is far more agile? highly unlikely. Ancalagon the black is literally on the OPPOSITE end of the dragon spectrum from Smaug, but he was still defeated by an elf. Admittedly, and elf wielding the light of a Silmaril, but still an elf nonetheless. If we go off of feats of strength alone, Ancalagon's fall alone destroyed an entire mountain range, which i doubt a Balrog can do, as its never been shown or implied that they have that kind of physical power. However Tolkiens mythology clearly demonstrates many times that the power and light of ones soul is the true power, which is why the Light of Valinor and the Two Trees is such a powerful thing, and explains why an elf could defeat Ancalagon. I'd say any given dragon is more physically powerful than any given Balrog... but a Balrog has a much deeper and more versatile mastery over the world around them than a dragon does - the Balrogs were maiar. they literally helped eru illuvatar create the world they live in. Dragons on the other hand were created by Morgoth who couldn't make anything of his own, so they must have been created from something else.

@@ephasm I like and agree with your comment save for one detail… Tolkien never states that Balrogs can fly. In fact… they do not have wings. And the one instance of Tolkien stating they took to the sky, is during the fall of Gondolin, and it is clearly stated that the Balrogs are mounted upon dragons. I personally do not believe Tolkien intended that they fly. Peter Jacksons visual representation of the Balrog has seemed to have permeated the general consciousness of most fans.

@@ephasm balrogs would beat any dragon but they cant fly lol. the description of them having wings are just to describe how the smoke and flame surround them it makes it look like they have wings but they cant fly.. but balrogs are basically demi gods, theyre mayar like galdalf and the wizards are. so before they took physical form they were among the valar and eru illuvitar aka god when he created everything. and even if a dragon could kill a balrog you cant actually destroy them completely, just their physical bodies as to where when a dragons killed its gone completely theyre a mortal being.

No the Name existist in Tolkiens writings, he was the one who tormented Hurin on top of the thangorodrim, but it is not known If this being was indeed a balrog or something else. But because of Christopher Tolkiens words Fans have agreed that it was a Balrog. It is also not known if this was the Balrog glorfindil faced but some Like to think so

theyre way more powerful than a mortal being.. if youre using that comparison because of gandalf fighting one you should know gandalf is actually in the same category of being as a balrog, a maiar. basically lesser gods. it goes eru illuvitar which is god, the valar which are like morgoth and the elven gods and one of them actually created the dwarfs, then the maiar are below them, so beings like gandalf, balrogs and sauron and were also present during the music that created the world

Balrogs are essentially Minor Gods ( Maiar) some dragons do show power grater then balrogs however they are not or semi-divine nature like the Maiar so my only explanation is that Melkor put portions of his powers into dragons Ancalagon the Black was so perfil he pushed en entire army of humans, elf’s and Ainur( mostly Maiar ) to the brink of defeat so lore wise some dragons are stronger then balrogs.
