This is a Balsa USA 1/3 Scale Fokker D.VII and is my first attempt at building a multi wing WW1 RC plane. I’m no expert and I’m learning as I go and enjoying the process of learning new skills, techniques and celebrating the love of model aviation. Join me for the journey.

Absolutely, although the fabric and dope covering is adding considerable weight.

One of our scale RC modelers, his brother, a retired airline pilot, bought a farm, someplace back in Virginia or that area. The sale finalized, he started looking at the property, and up, covered in whatever, was a WW 1 biplane. Back after the war, you could buy these things for nearly nothing and some slick salesman sold one to the farmer. He pulled it out, it was in sad shape, but being a pilot, used the barn for his hangar, and started rebuilding it. His brother went out to see his plane, made copies of the plans, provided by a museum in England, and scaled it down, and was going to paint it the same as his brother's plane. He used some of the damaged wood in the full-size plane, in the model, built it completely scale. His wife wove the wicker seat and helped with some of the details, I got to see it when it was framed up and he showed pictures of his brother's plane and then his, He never completely finished it, as some museum here bought it, had him finish half the plane, to show what the finished side would look like, and the other half who it looked without the covering. It went into a glass enclosure and resided in the museum to this day.

@@richardwylie07Dad built one of the old VK models, Neuport 17 kits. I was in the AF, over in England, he didn't tell me he was building it. I found it up in my old closet, warped out of shape when I was home on leave. We stripped the covering, (Silk and Dope) let it set for several more years, then when I got out, he sanded the past of the covering off, cleaned it up, I think he built new tail surfaces, warped to badly to recover. We used Coverall and painted scale markings with Dad painting the Indian head on the sides. Finished, he wanted to fly it, said everyone would be at the field that weekend, they had all gone to a contest in Central California, leaving us the field. We got the engine set and dad handed me the controls, I was still a not too confident flier myself, and he said fly it, if it crashed, he'd build something else. I flew it, scared the heck out of me, flew it slow, looked really good in the air, landed the first time on the wheels, looked really good. Second and every flight after that, even with good pilots trying it, the plane would nose over, no gun on top, hit the prop nut, over on its back, engine still idling. I retired it when dad passed, then handed it over to one of the local air museums in the area. Every flight it nosed over and kept running.

Hi there, thanks for following along. It's me (Richard), building an RC plane (Fokker D.Vii)... I've been building it for 15 months... and the build is happening in Sydney Australia.

@@MBCGRS I'm 72, and I was about 13 or 14 when I saw the bare bones airframe. He wasn't one of our regular fliers. Sorry, it was some where back in the mid to early 60s.

Wow! Now I am grateful to the KZbin algorithm for showing your video in my feed this morning! This is amazing work! I’m going to give your channel a shout out on my small channel, but more importantly, ask some friends who have much larger viewership to get out the word about what you are doing. I know they will really appreciate your excellent build! 👍👍

Mark, be sure to visit RCScaleBuilder and follow my build there. It’s called ‘Richo’s 1/3 scale BUSA Fokker DVii’. The RCScaleBuilder thread gives much more detail on the progress, challenges, decision making etc. You might also find some other amazing builds to inspire you. Be sure to check out ‘1/3rd Fokker D-VII (Dutch Design Team)’. It is a masterpiece!!

Yes, it's the first time I've gone this big. But it's been a huge amount of fun. Not sure I'll ever be able to go back to 1/5 and 1/6 scale!!

Oh No...! Not another Udet Fokker D7 color scheme...! I'm sure half of all D 7 models and even full size aircraft, are one of his many paint jobs. That guy has a lot to answer for... just joking mate. Looks good. I think all these late model Jasta 4 D7 Fs had the BMW 3a 240hp engines. Wingnut wings did a model of one... 4330/18. Still on their website if your interested. Anyway looking great. Cheers
