I would like to point out to the research team that balsa is a hardwood, not a softwood. surprisingly, the definition of soft or hard has nothing yo do with being soft or hard, but small tubes within the grain of the wood.

Talk Business, Balsa wood is not a softwood, it is classed as a hardwood. Classification as to whether a particular timber is hard or soft, is to do with it's cell structure and whether it is angiosperm or gymnosperm not how it feels to the touch. Hardwoods are angiosperms or true flowering plants that bear seeds in capsules while softwoods are mostly conifers or pine trees.

im from the model flying world we used Balsa so much up until about ten years ago now we use carbon firbre , fibre glass and foam i wonder what kind of shift in the market this created for Balsa farmers.

None there is a great demand on the world for balsa in uses other than model airplanes. I still use balsa in full size aircraft construction.

Why do i read multiple contradictory assertions? I still read many sources asserting that balsawood is so expensive because it is very slow growing. Yet here and other sources state that balsa is a very fast growing tree. Could someone knock some heads together and agree on the truth, or are there wide variations that mean both are true?

Any wood with a specific gravity as low as balsa will grow fast.
