Investigators have recovered a data recorder from the container ship which crashed into a bridge in the US city of Baltimore, officials say.
Six people are presumed dead after the Singapore-flagged Dali cargo vessel struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge as it left port on Tuesday.
Investigators hope the recovered data recorder will answer questions about how and why the ship malfunctioned.

To be fair that is to be expected from a truss supported structure Truss' are designed to share loads so when a key supporting pillar fails it will cause a chain reaction as the remaining supports are being subjected to loads they were never designed to take.

Considering the ship & what's on it, it's possible that the ship could weigh more that the bridge! There's possibly thousands of truck loads of merchandise on the ship, and there's no way that could even fit on that bridge. And the ship had been under power before it lost it. It like a giant wrecking ball😞

@@colonelcider8292I suppose looking at it from that standpoint, that bridge performed pretty well. If that thing hit one of our many derelict bridges, they'd probably disintegrate from one end to the other! Edit: I guess it pretty much did fall apart end to end, I don't know how I mistook that. I think it was just so shocking! But I still think one of the derelict bridges would simply poofed into dust, sadly...

Sadly, Generally, a person can survive in 41-degree F (5-degree C) water for 10, 15 or 20 minutes before the muscles get weak, you lose coordination and strength, which happens because the blood moves away from the extremities and toward the center, or core, of the body.

Unless they are miraculously under a big air bubble with their faces right side up, this is a body recovery mission and has been since 2:00A Tuesday morning. I can't believe safety officials didn't think it was necessary to have tugboats escort huge shipping barges through a lifeline bridge that is such an important part of the economy. Didn't think to have barriers protected the crucial points of the bridge either?

I can't believe you don't know what an argument from incredulity is. But still here we are. The bride is some 52 years old. The port is the the largest in America, shipping cars, steel, spy and sugar among many things. I could find not figures for the number of ships a day that use that port but I think it would to be, in maritime terms, quite alot. Basically, a great many shops have passed beneath this bridge for 52 years unescorted. Then factor in how many other ports around the world have ships passing beneath bridges to meet reach them. The ship had a pilot on board. So normal day to day operations would be safe (as could reasonably be expected.). And I hope you would agree that losing power while at reasonable speed, close enough to the bridge and hitting a bridge support. Is an edge case. And finally people far more qualified than me and I will reasonably assume, you. Create the rules for ships operating out of these ports. edited for wrong fallacy. Incredulity not ignorance as first stated.

Part of my job at the phone company was to run a monthly test of the diesel power generators which are attached to each central office - these generators are why landline phones continue to work even when commercial power is unavailable. There is a main fuel tank for the generator, and also a "day tank", which is there to help insure that the generator doesn't run out of fuel for a 24-hour period. One day, someone running the test started the generator before checking the day tank, which was nearly empty. After switching to the generator from commercial power, the lights stayed on for a minute or so, but then began failing throughout the building, and emergency fire crews were dispatched to the central office by outside witnesses who noticed the huge cloud of dense black smoke billowing up from the generator room. It was exactly the same as what we see in the video of the ship, so my guess is that after main power blew, someone started the emergency generator, which promptly ran out of fuel, producing the big cloud of black smoke, and leading to a repeat of the power failure. The difference here was that there was no commercial power to switch back to.

I have had Steered Vessels bigger than this with American Harbor Pilots Bridges in Mississippi River, Colombia River Going to Oregon Golden Gate passing to the Oakland Brinde going to Stockton., I have been in Baltimore and New Jersey but this unfortunate event that have had happened has a lot of things to Consider. 1.) how Old is the Vessel? 2.) if it is Singapore Registered surely it went through a rigorous inspection 3.) the Captain or Skipper of the Ship is no longer in Control once the Harbor Pilot is on board. Things to Consider •Failure of Communication bet. Bridge and the Engine room •mechanical failure •Electonic or Computer Failure •if two Pilots are on Board the other Pilot is under trainee. In many areas, large ships have to use cleaner burning fuel in areas where pollution has to be reduced/controlled. Usually fuel with less sulphur content. English channel is a good example. The amount of emissions from these huge ships is astonishing. Hope that’s helpful.

I understand what you're asking - It's a good question;- The main fuel is referred to as Bunker fuel and is too heavy to burn as is. Steam generators pump steam through heating coils in the fuel tanks and only once hot is it thin enough to be used in the engine. However if the engine is likely to be shut down, then a lighter fuel is used so that the motor does not have to re-START using bunker - it isn't to do with being inshore

Many many angles should looked at, usually theses shipyards falsify records on the request of owners to cut cost etc…
@BillyReed68

Ok. I live in the area and have been over that bridge thousands of times. They turned right into the pile and everyone can see that. Those ships are so heavy that if they lose power they just keep going on the last heading for a long time or until they hit something, usually the side of the channel. They don't just turn by themselves and without power. It takes a lot to turn them when you want them to. So, this was absolutely deliberate. That ship was a diesel electric, It obviously starts rolling coal just as it starts a turn and then when the turn is completed the stacks go quiet. The heading of the ship straightens out just before impact. It is exactly as it appears to be. That BS of losing power is absurd when we can clearly see smoke pouring from the stacks the entire time the ship is turning. This cuts I-95 in half at the Mason Dixon for the next 5-6 years. It took 8 years to replace the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and another 6 to finish the interchanges. I believe this was tit for tat over the Nord-Stream Pipeline.
@jimjoe9945
@jimjoe9945 Ай бұрын
Most large ships are direct drive diesel not diesel electric. When a single screw ship backs down( goes into reverse) the torque moves the Stern left which moves the bow right. There probably was no power to the rudder to counter act this.
