Does this bridge have traffic light control? I’ve only crossed it once many years ago so I don’t remember. The Delaware river bridge on 95 has traffic lights across all lanes so if that was the case with the Baltimore bridge they could have just turned all the lights red. At 8.5 knots, the tugs cannot hold a ship this size. In the Suez canal tugs follow the ships but they are more there to be ready to pull ships off if they beach in the canal. The energy of a ship that size at 8.5 knots is simply not possible for tugs to hold.

Honestly that's when they should have sent out a warning but they probably didn't think they were going to hit the bridge at that point. It wasn't until they were closer when they realized what was actually going to happen. Plus I'd imagine since most of the men were from foreign countries, their main language probably wasn't English. Everyone did the best they could in the split seconds they had. I'm just glad this didn't happen during morning & evening rush hours because the loss would have been even greater.

I appreciate the detailed coverage here. Well done. I am impressed that such coverage has reached us on YT so quickly and with so much detail. It’s tragic that lives were lost, beyond words really. It’s very impressive that lives were also saved through the actions of the crew, pilots, and those who stopped traffic. Nothing can bring back the dead. It’s an extremely good thing that the number isn’t higher. Yet like all tragedies, it’s beyond terrible that it was even a single life, let alone 6. (Or whatever the final tally is). It should not go without mentioning that safety is all of our responsibility. Every time a corner is cut, or we ask others to cut them, lives are risked. How many people stop to consider what the market forces they project cause in the wider world. What support we provide for those whose greed has matched our own ignorance of what corners are cut to provide us with what we want.

Where I live no large shipping vessels are allowed under the Humber Bridge all large vessels must anchor or bay way before ever getting near bridges. Key Bridge collapse To build a bridge with a structure to withstand a collision with a giant container ship is prohibitively expensive if not impossible, but to build the barriers around the piles to act as the deflective shields is very affordable and effective. Redundant security: for the exposed ports where buildings are too close to the shores, arrestor gears like those of the carriers can be placed to catch the anchors of the runaway ships in cases of emergency.

They've been talking about installing buffer barriers ("Dolphins") on those two channel side piers for a couple decades now. Everyone knew this was a matter of when, not if... PS - The fuel companies have been disposing of their refinery waste--plastics and waxes that are byproducts--by putting it in the high sulfur, "Bunker fuel" that these ships run on (think the thickest, nastiest diesel fuel there is). It's been gumming up engines and causing these loss of power events for quite some time. This time it happened in an area with little room for error, as opposed to the open sea.

@laternevercame
@laternevercame Ай бұрын
Why would you drive 30minutes to avoid the key bridge? You have 895 and 95 both running parallel to the key bridge. Neither would take 30minutes longer. My commute to work is over the keybridge or 896. They both take the same amount of time. It definitely wouldn't be an extra half hour just to cut through light street and hit eastern through the city to put you back on 695. Unless you're new to the city, I can't phathom why someone would circle to entire city to avoid 695/keybridge. That's silly. Lots of parallel ground level/tunnel options to avoid the bridge and get in/out of the city.

I'm not buying this either. The power went out but if you notice it was at the same time the smoke poured out of the stack ( engines with no power do not make smoke) as the power went out and came back on they noticed it was possible to miss the bridge and the power went back out making it harder to see. It appears to me that the shop turned into the bridge at the last minute. Watch it close. Right now in the government and things all running scams and lies to the people so you never know. It will be interesting to see where the money ends up at the end. That would tell a lot wouldn't it? Even the recording box went out at the right time. I'm grateful for the lives that were saved and very sorry for the ones lost. It just seems with the information given there was plenty of time to have saved all lives. The wind also pushed them. See the smoke coming out of the stack blowing almost horizontally to the left of the image? Coincidentally that’s also the direction the boat was pushed. @@farmasyst The ship was in the normal shipping channel going 8 knots, but had lost power a couple of minutes earlier and was drifting out of the shipping channel towards the bridge without ability to steer. If you look at the ship now, you can see the concrete dolphin right next to ship, that would have prevented a direct hit if the ship would have moved straight on. One theory had been that they tried to go astern and that increased the steering problem. But most likely is that they restarted an emergency generator but not the main engine yet, and never recovered the ability to steer.

I don't get how there are no mandatory towing ships guiding out large vessels past a vulnerable infrastructure like that and how there was no sufficient guiding structures and/or submerged rock ballast around the pillars to protect them. I've read they installed the harbor cranes to receive large container vessels like this one only recently but forgot to adapt the infrastructure to safely receive them. There was nothing able to prevent an accident like this. That is baffling. Ships are complex machines and do get out of control from time to time. So decision and policy makers of the port shouldn't get off easily by scapegoating an operator imo.

If you had of done any prior knowledge learning of the incident before your comment, you would have known that the main engine died, (as there is only 1 main engine in most of these large ships that control everything, propulsion as well as electrics) so this vessel had absolutely very little steering without propulsion. The turn to starboard happened because the ship dropped its anchor in the hopes that it would spin around and stop before hitting bridge. The lights that came back on were from the emergency auxiliary motor, which only supplies electrics for lights etc, not propulsion.
