Baltimore Marine Disaster Underscores Risks At Sea |

Tuesday’s marine disaster on the Patapasco River near Baltimore in Maryland could well be termed bizarre. How does a container vessel equipped with all modern navigational aids ram into a 47-year-old bridge that stands out on any map let alone a river?
Capt DK Sharma, formerly of the Indian Navy, is Stratnewsglobal’s resident naval and maritime affairs specialist. In his view, it would be unfair at this point to blame the captain of the ship or the pilots guiding the container vessel Dali out to the open sea. Video images of the Dali suggest it may have experienced a loss of control, which is what Singapore’s Synergy Marine which operates the vessel claims.
Capt. Sharma says if an inquiry finds the captain of the Dali or the pilots guilty of negligence, they face severe penalties including losing their licence. In effect, their career would be finished. But if it is proved that the ship experienced mechanical or other failure that led to loss of control, it may explain how it rammed into the pillar of the Francis Scott Key bridge.
Another possible explanation is the time of the ship leaving its berth. If this is done in broad daylight or at night, the chances of an accident are less. But it is in the uneasy transition from daylight to darkness and vice versa, that things can go horribly wrong. Tune in for more in this conversation with Capt. DK Sharma.

The people who have never sailed on merchant vessels and with half knowledge should not start making videos and comment on the seafarers . Master and crew have done their best for the safety of life and applaud by the President .We should be proud of our Indian seafarers.

The captain and crew sent out a mayday message that they had lost power. This timely action helped save a lot of lives because the bridge operators were able to block traffic going on to the bridge. Unfortunately there were repair crews doing maintenance on the bridge when the collision happened.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards related to pilot state that when the pilot is on the bridge he/she is responsible for all actions - including sending messages to shore and BTW the unfortunate accident also. So the captain and crew are almost completely absolved as long as the pilot is on board, according to IMO. But it is practically impossible for one or two pilots to independently operate such a massive ship and take the assistance of the captain and his/her crew for all operations including sending out mayday messages.

the capt have the full responsibilty of the incident even have pilot on board. Pilot only guide and assist the vessel because of familiarity of the area.

And no...the master will not lose his license not bcz the "TRACK LOOKED OK"..it will depend on if the pre departure CFR checks were carried out ,properly or not... steering gear test, control tests to be carried out prior departure.. passage plan to be ready and signed ...pre departure checklist complied with...all this will determine masters liability..not "THE TRACK LOOKED OK"

He gives exactly same elementary details in superficial english. Ship is big, it takes time to stop a ship, pilot gave wrong orders etc. Everybody knows it Mr. Navy Man.

A recent incident involving a vessel losing both main engine power (M/E) and steering control for a brief period serves as a stark reminder of the critical role these systems play in safe navigation, particularly in confined waterways. The loss of maneuverability in the close proximity to a bridge significantly elevated the potential for a collision or grounding event. Rare Event: A complete loss of power and steering on a large vessel is fortunately uncommon. This is very rare. Lets see what comes out in to the Investigation. Unfortunate and painful.

Why to speculate theories when investigation is still on..I'm sorry but it's a very insensitive analysis by the ex navy captain ... Better to interview a merchant Navy master in such regards as operation and handling of merchant vessels are way too different than warships...saying the master might lose licence shows our mentality..infact the master will be rewarded for his timely mayday alert which stopped the bridge traffic..
