If you happened upon this video--Hi! This was uploaded to my channel YEARS ago, before I started focusing on making actual content. I've kept it here all this time because it's been a joy to see so many people leave comments talking about how much this scene--and this movie--means to them. Balto is one of my favorite films of all time, even now that I'm almost in my 30s, and I'm happy that so many of you have enjoyed it just as much as I have. Reach for the light: you might touch the sky!

After have watched Togo the Disney movie. I am very disappointed in the movie Balto… because Togo was the true hero dog, Balto became famous because he was the last team to arrive with the serum to the children. There was 20 teams. And 19 of the teams ran each 31 miles, while 1 team which was Togo’s, ran 251 miles!!!

James Horner worked on Balto in California, and Amblimation was based in London, he "preferred to present his score as the orchestral finished product, and make alterations based on notes from that finished product." James Horner has won 2 Academy Awards for Best Original Dramatic Score - Titanic and Best Original Song - Titanic: My Heart Will Go On.

What I love about this is they don't spoon feed you anything. What is the white wolf? Is it real? a spirit guide? Who knows? Who CARES? The scene is a beautiful moment of a character accepting a part of himself he always shunned and kept hidden, because it made him an outcast, but finally realizing that what made him different also made him strong. It's a scene that gave me chills when I first saw it as a kid and it still gives me chills now, when I'm nearly in my 40s. Thank you for leaving it up for us to enjoy!

How the original film "Balto" (and the director of this movie) intended: Balto's father is a wild wolf. Balto's mother is a working sled dog-husky. The mysterious and ambiguous White Wolf from this powerful and awesome scene is Balto's inner wolf and manifestation of his inner voice, the metaphore and the symbol.

@KudaKeileon3 жыл бұрын
@@djomega8462 OP is talking about how it was the ORIGINAL intention. The ORIGINAL movie's director was going for the other way around, and that the white wolf isn't actually real. I'm pretty sure they were going for a White Fang thing, where White Fang's mother was a sled dog who ran off and mated with a wild wolf. Of course, Balto 2 contradicts that and makes the "canon" that Balto's mother was the wolf, not his father, and made a bunch of kids think that the white wolf in Balto 1 was Aniu, who looks similar and was introduced in Balto 2.

I like to think that this is like the scene from The Lion King where Simba sees his father in the clouds. In both scenes, the character is actually looking at an unacknowledged side of himself, represented by another character. That's why the white wolf gives Balto the cold shoulder at first. She's willing to ignore him because he's willing to ignore her, and she only comes back after he acknowledges and accepts his inner wolf.

I love the subtly of this scene. You can view this moment in different ways. The White Wolf could be the spirit of his mother or a manifestation of his inner self that he refuses to accept. Or a form of both? I’m not sure if the sequels ever reveal the answer (as I’ve long since forgotten them) but I like not knowing. It’s an art that has been forgotten in Hollywood.

I think it’s both. He spends time being ashamed of being part wolf and somewhat hiding it. It’s until this scene that the spirit of his inner wolf comes to see him and show him what he has left inside, Balto still refuses. Then Balto places his paw over the wolfs print and realizing it’s identical to his, he embraces his inner wolf and howls along with his ancestor now next to him againbecause it never really left.

The white wolf was asked to Simon Well the director of Balto (the first one not the sequels) and Simon's reply: "Whether the White Wolf is Balto's father or some kind of ephemeral Spirit of the Wolf is deliberately unstated. The White Wolf Sequence is still my favorite part of the movie, and James Horner's extraordinary score that accompanies it still raises the hairs on the back of my neck. We wanted to keep it mystical and vague - is this a real event or is it some kind of hallucination that Balto is experiencing? All of these were reasons to not have the White Wolf speak or in any way explain himself. Perhaps the Wolf is a manifestation of Balto's inner voice, telling him to take ownership and use that part of him that he has always been ashamed of - certainly that is the message Balto takes from the encounter, real or not. (And by the way, if it was really his dad why didn't the old man help him drag the antitoxin up the cliff?)"

It's sad that they don't create this kind of cartoons for kids anymore nowadays. Idk but I find this scene as motivation. Balto was done at this moment, he was at lowest, but he got up, believed in himself and climbed that mountain. Same with our lives, there are a lot of time when life hit us, when we are down, but start climbing because that's the difference between loser and winner. I come here every once in a while just to charge my energy here and move on with my life.

I was stumbling across the internet looking for animated movies to watch, and I came across a gif of a wolf gathering the strengh to howl in what appears to be a terrible blizzard. I had to find this movie. I finally realized it was Balto (i've never seen the movie, but I've had seen the second one when I was very small). I must say this is by far the best part of the movie. I was seriously stunned by how majestic the white wolf was, and I loved how Balto finally accepted his part-wolf side. What a great scene of animation!

If anyone is wondering why this scene moves you more than similar scenes in Lion King, Mulan, etc; it's because Balto is only able to overcome his struggle to embrace his identity AFTER seeing the fallen medicine. Up until this moment, his failed attempts to reconcile his identity (e.g. join the sled dog team) were an internal struggle separate from his desire to help the children. This is his breakthrough moment, pushed to the point where he cannot save the children by passing as a dog. His higher motive to save the children propels him past his insecurities, allowing him to "make this journey alone" as only a wolf can. This hits home because it parallels how humans actually overcome problems and grow, by finding inner strength to support others. Lion king has helping others (the pride) as a backdrop to Simba's return, but it's weaker because his problem is overcoming shame, which is unrelated to whether he is able to save the pride. In fact, Simba doesn't even choose to confront his shame, only "confessing" after Scar exposes him. Contrast that to Balto, where accepting his identity is essential to save the children.

@saribeepo.o51113 жыл бұрын
@@kiaracoston2604 Nope, original artists confirm the wolf is supposed to be either not there, and is a spiritual representation of Balto's inner wolf or his father. They intentionally did not say which it was when interviewed, leaving it up for the viewer to interpret. ... The art makes it clear, the wolf is to be seen as male by the audience, and the other clues point to the wolf, in fact, being a spiritual representation over a physical wolf. ... It was canon that Balto's father was the wolf until lazy writers washed that.. for some reason thinking because they went with Balto's daughter, it would have to be her grandmother she felt a connection too rather than her grandfather. ... Sorry but lazy narrow minded writers for future straight to home cash grabs don't change the original.
@TheSilverwing9993 жыл бұрын
@@saribeepo.o5111 Well yeah usually I would agree with you since I'm all for the artist's intention, but in this case it was never stated in the first movie, so it being established as his mother in the second movie is actually canon now. And I don't have an issue with it per say since it could go either way. The question is, does it really matter if the wolf is male or female? I don't think it does personally. It still carries the same feeling and message.

I usually never cry at movies, but this scene brought me closer to just that than anything else! It's so emotional! The moment the telegraph operator turned off the lantern, followed by all the lights in Nome going out was just so sad. Symbolizing that everyone in town had lost hope. Then when Jenna walked up onto the hill with the broken bottles and lantern, and put up the fake aurora, followed by when she turned around and whispered "Balto", the look on her face said it all. It made it even more emotionally heavy. She knew that they were running out of time. She was the last one who had even a sliver of hope left, and now it was starting to fade. Though I was kinda expecting her to whisper "Balto...please hurry!" This movie is totally worthy of being my favorite Disney Film! (AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING: YES!!! I know Balto isn't actually Disney! But I like to, in some way, consider it a part of the Disney family.)
