Why is it that I only discover this channel now? I'm a local from East Malaysia. Bambangan indeed on red list and available at the outskirt of city/ village or rainforest. This particular fruit is special because only few people know how to grow, cook, preserve, fermenting and eat it properly. This knowledge pass down by words of mouth and practice within family and ethnic group (I happen to be from this race and learn it from my family) The Bambangan that you eat in this video either the sour type or raw. There also the sweet type of Bambangan, I can only describe it taste like sweet mango with a bit sour. The fruit in this vids are meant to be fermented or used as salad (add salt and chili pepper). Fermenting Bambangan is not easy, require bit of labour and might end up in failure but it can last for at least year if succed. Unripe Bambangan also used in cooking with extra preparation. It considered as one of Sabahan traditional cuisine. We usually cook it with fish dish.

The trees are getting rare, even in Borneo because they take many years to mature and produce fruits. Most of the trees producing fruits nowadays are remnants of the lucky trees planted many generations ago. If we were to plant the seeds now, most probably we won't live long enough to see their blossoms, even if everything is favourable ( no flood/drought/fire/vandalism etc). It would be nice in your fruit videos if you could include some footage/pics of the mature trees. Then viewers would get a sense of the amount of time it needs for these trees reach current height ( and producing fruits). Therefore, I totally agree with you that they are in the red list. With farmers replacing them with other modern crops, it's just a matter of time before they are gone. Keep up the good work and cheers from Tenom Sabah, Land Below The Wind.

Very interesting William. Do you know how long it takes for a tree to bear fruit? It would have been interesting to see these in nature. I would love to see more about where the fruit I review comes from. Its just difficult with the money and time that I would need to do that. Maybe one day :)

If they are the same genus as mangoes, there should be no difficulty grafting them onto mango rootstocks - this will also have the huge advantage of reducing the time taken to yield fruit.

yea... u dont eat it as is. u need to "ferment" it first. u mix the flesh with the grated seed, and store it for 1-3 days before consumption. theres something in the seed (enzyme? idk) that makes the flesh less sour. after that, itll still be sour, but itll be the nice kind of sour.usually eaten together with rice. its a traditional dish for kadazandusun people.

btw wonder why u say its rare in borneo. its like eeeverywhere in the market but they rarely sell it fresh like that. its very commonly sold in containers as bambangan pickle aka "jeruk bambangan". people just dont eat the fruit fresh like that.....u CAN of course but the pickle is more highly prized.
@WeirdExplorer

Thanks! I said it was rare outside Borneo. I've heard that it doesn't grow anywhere else. I looked for the pickles while I was there, but couldn't find them. but I'm glad I got a hold of the fresh ones. Belunu wasn't in season when I was there unfortunately, guess I'll have to go back for that one :)

I have this tree growing infront of my parents house. The tree is really tall and big. It creaked whenever there's a storm. Sadly it no longer fruit like it used to when I was young. Its kinda scary when they fruit because the fruit is big and hard and grow on the tallest branch. When they fall on the ground I can hear the thud from inside the house. Imagine one fell on your head rip.

Awesome videos Jared, nice to follow your adventures every week for a tropical fruit lover like me. I know you apologise every time you give the Latin name of a fruit for mispronounciation, but you usually say magnifera instead of mangifera :) mangoes are magnificent, A lot of the fruits growing in my garden here in Australia were inspired by your videos and look forward to seeing reviews of fruit like ice cream bean, unusual avocados, grumichama, cherry of the rio grande... Good luck!

"I don't like this person because this kind of person is not for me. But I'm beginning to appreciate her for who she is. She may be as good as a peach but also as bad as a horrible fire. But you spend time with her for those savory moments and you get used to her weird ways. She has some nice attributes as a woman...somewhere. She's not that bad. I think that if you gain an appreciation for her negative attributes along with your connection to her, then I think you'd like her. I know that by the time I'm done with her, I'm not going to like her. But I might be able to at least understand her. This is a woman that is vulnerable. It's probably going to be a very very long time until I can have her again...if I ever have her again. She is from this part of the world. Someone as rare as her might be one that won't be around for a very long time. I'm just going to stay here and try to enjoy her. Try to understand her the best I can. I know I'm not going to acquire my desired taste in women in her. But I want to at least get as close as I can. I'm heading off to Japan, and this will probably be the last woman here to date with in Borneo. If you end up going to Borneo, which is the only place where she is really available, give her a try. Get a few of them. See if you can acquire their kind of women before you leave and maybe it will bring you back." Do you see where I'm going with this? ;) NOTE: I'm not being sexist, it's just a strange similarity.

Weird Explorer - So I was wishing I could taste all these fruits you show us, and I had a good idea. I'm obviously not the only person who watches these and wants to eat everything, so you should turn that into an opportunity to make money and save endangered plant species and make people throughout the world happy and healthy, by doing something to help make these foods available for purchase by people across the globe, shipped from the sources where they grow. In other words, start a company, or else set yourself up as a guy who connects the growers to the sellers. The World's Exotic Fruit Company. ..Do it! If you don't who will? Keep bambangan from going extinct! Put it in my mouth hole so I shut up! (j/k I can still type while eating)

I wish I could. Its extremely difficult to transport fruit across international borders since it is an incredibly high risk of bringing in contaminants. Some people are out fighting to do this very thing but its a long terrible process that I simply do not have the money for if I wanted to. The closest thing I do is send seeds to gardeners that support my patreon So they can grow it here. This alone is a hugely obnoxious task, but I like that in some way I am sharing fruits that are sometimes not available anywhere else.

Weird Explorer Thanks for the reply. Whenever you find rare foods that can grow in hardiness zone 5a (-20 to -15 °F, Wisconsin), I'd be interested. And keep those creative wheels turning to ponder ways you could make money helping that cause of getting awesome fruits to people. Maybe some big compay out there would be interested in paying you for playing a role in helping them. Even something like Costco? Otherwise a company specifically dealing in exotic fruits. Researching, visiting, and establishing connections with growers/suppliers they can use? Seems like that might not be too much beyond what you're already doing and could equal money and helping people. A big thing there too is that you have the perfect platform for advertising how people could acquire the fruits themselves. At the end of every video. Just trying to throw helpful ideas at you. I think it would be really cool if you could make something happen there. Whatever's best is for you to decide, but figured it's something you could contemplate.
