But or Rent - Bambi - • Bambi (1942)
In this Disney classic a young deer named Bambi joins his new friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home. As a boy, he learns from his doting mother and his father, The Great Prince of the Forest, that there are dangers in the open meadows where hunters can spot the animals, and he meets a beautiful young doe named Faline. As Bambi grows up, he learns that there is tragedy as well as beauty and joy in his forest world and on the path to adulthood.

I remember my parents bringing this movie home when I was 4. I think the main reason I never felt traumatized by it and didn’t develop an angry attitude towards hunters was because my dad watched it with me. As a hunter and farmer, he knew a lot about responsible use of guns and appropriate times to shoot an animal. I still remember him explaining how irresponsible the hunters in this movie were for shooting a mother with a baby and for not watching their fire, causing a forest fire.

Idk I saw many cartoons where are sad scenes (The Lion King, HTTYD3, Balto2) But this one scene from Bambi where died his mother I never felt more sad before. I saw it for the first when I was 5.y.o then I forgot on this and after 5 years I remembered it(I was 10). And now after 6 years my 5.y.o sister watched on this and this scene where died his mother remebered me all this sad feelings

I watched the film young myself, and even now I feel the dread of the man. The unseen enemy factor works so good in this film. To the animals, the man is evil itself, and that way we can feel it as well. Also, my parents told me it wasn't hunters, but poachers in question.

Bambi was based on a book by an Austrian author, it's considered one of the first environmental novels. My grandmother had a copy and I read it as a kid. I was expecting something similar to the Disney movie and as a result I found it brutal. It's actually quite interesting and I do recommend it. You mentioned how realistic some aspects are, but Disney actually made the story much softer. The book has a lot of fairly brutal but true to the reality of dear life aspects that Disney removed entirely. For example Faline had a twin brother who vanished and was presumed dead at the same time as Bambi's mother, but he is returned a year later wearing a harness, he tells the forest animals that Man isn't a monster as they think and that they shouldn't fear Him. He goes in the meadow all the time and is eventually shot dead because he thought he was safe even when the hunters came again. In the scene where he fights another deer, in the book he actually fights two bucks with whom he was friends, but because it's the season of mating they're all obsessed with getting the female, it ends up feeling a lot more like Faline is a prize, than Bambi defending her choice. In that same vein a few seasons later Bambi is no longer with Faline, he does think of her, but it's a distant sort of feeling of having good memories but no true desire to find her again. Basically since the deer aren't in heat any more, he doesn't care as much. Since I'd seen the movie it was very frustrating, but I do admire the way the author stuck to making Bambi and the others a "real" deer.

The interesting thing about the voice of Thumper is that he was considered as the ‘worst’ or ‘loudest’ among the other kids that auditioned for the role. However, Walt Disney gave the role to that one kid. That actually wowed me.

The humans or referring as "Man" is the major antagonist of the movie. Some may refer to Man as a poacher instead of a hunter because at that time it is illegal to hunt in the winter or hunting a doe with fawn. Seeing that Man killed Bambi's mother, this lead to believe that Man is a poacher. The death of Bambi's Mother by Man, which is one of our own, was a tragic and traumatic scene to kids and adults who led them to question who exactly is the monster. Fact: Even though Man does not physically appear, his presence can be known by the eerie 3 note string tone. This makes it sound similar to the Jaws theme.

Let me explain here, in Bambi the monarch of the forest is not led by a king but a Great Prince. And they don't necessarily rule the forest, they care for it and protect it. A guardian or protector you may call. They can live a longer lifespan than a normal deer, have vast wisdom and skills in protecting the forest. That is what Bambi's father is. As for his mother, she is not technically a princess or queen. She's more of a mate, leading Bambi to be the next prince and when he matures like his father, he will be the next Great Prince of the Forest.

30:23 He definitely was shot, but not all gunshots are necessarily fatal. Deer are sturdy enough that a hunter has to be precise in hitting one of their relatively small vital points. It happens all the time that if you miss a vital point, the deer can still run off and the hunter has to track it down to see if he bled out or not. From the twitch of all four legs, I always imagined Bambi got hit in the side, but not in the chest.

The device you talked about at the beginning is called the multiplane camera! It was tall enough that it required a set of stairs next to it, and it had several levels to it for multiple background layers. The camera shot down from the top, so the artists could have the multiple layers pan through independently of each other. It gave a depth to the environment, and it was the feature film premiere of this new tech! Before this, backgrounds had only been one painting, and had looked like it.

I love this film, I watched it a lot as a kid. The artistry is so beautiful, the backgrounds, the colors, the snow, the music is all so amazing! I love that they we were just going through this deer's life. Yes, his mother dying always got to me and the way the dad just immediately says how he'll never see her again while he' literally still looking for her, not knowing she was dead or understanding it and he says it quite coldly, he does soften when he says my son but still. I love the only villain is the hunters and that we never see them at all but you feel the danger of them. It always got me when that bird was so scared and she flies away, you hear a shot then she falls to the ground, man that was gutsy. The line-up of release for Disney back then was Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, The Reluctant Dragon, Dumbo, Bambi. Sleeping Beauty was way after.

I love the old classical music in this movie, Bambi is one my childhood favorites along with Charlotte's Web growing up. But I can't say I didn't cry a lot, but it taught me early on about circle of life, my dad was hunter, so he wanted me to learn early and so did grandpa. But other than that, I loved this movie. Plus, back in the day when it was on VHS I always loved the old Disney how it was all hand-drawn art back in the day for the animation compared to now. Not saying that the new animation is bad, but I do love seeing older drawn by hand art. I just loved how they made everything back then.

I think Bambi 2 is much better. Male deer are bucks, females are does, and the young are the fawns. There are lots of regulations when it comes to hunting. Limits it to certain seasons and stuff, and the females cost more to hunt and are generally left alone. Most people also go for the bucks because of the antlers anyways, and so no babies like Bambi really get orphaned that much.
@miraculousninja1739

As a kid, this was one of my childhood favorite movies! As an adult, I do hunt deer. I do it specifically for meat, because it’s less money. I don’t waste any of the animal, and use as much as I can. Even though I do hunt, I loathe people who hunt for sport. I find it cruel and wasteful to hunt animals for sport, because it’s basically killing for fun. There’s nothing fun about that!😢 Hunters hunt deer, because if the population of deer exceeded carrying capacity, any new fawns would die tragically of starvation. It’s like a bucket with hose filling it up, and the water will eventually run over. Also, unless they were starving and had no other options, no ethical hunter would EVER kill a doe with a fawn! This movie is still one of my absolute favorites, and a beautiful work of art! 🦌🍂

Note: Averages of wild animal life expectancy is because of predators and illness. Humans used to live a lot shorter lives too due to the same problems, but our advances in health and medicine have allowed us to live longer on average. Hence why animals in captivity live longer, they have health care and usually less worry about predators. I don't know why, but Bambi has always been a film I would watch around Christmas. Not sure why my brain decided Bambi was more appropriate to watch than Frosty the Snowman, but I have fond memories at my relatives house sitting on the floor, drinking hot cocoa while watching the life of a deer. I did end up watching Bambi 2 a lot more frequently though.

Believe it or not Bambi is based on a novel called Bambi Life In The Woods written back in 1920 by Felix Salten. In the novel it is explained that the hunters at the end of the movie were irresponsible teenagers that's why the hunting was so violent and a forest fire broke out I don't mind hunting if done responsibility as it helps decrease the population and controls diseases such as rabies from spreading.

Walt Disney put his heart into this movie If the frame didnt have expression on the characters, he rejected it. EVERY frame needed to have emotion on the expression of the characters. Also, a lot of kids remember seeing bambis mom die, that's how traumatic this was. They thought they saw it when it doesn't show it. They used a lot of influence from Bambi for the lion king as well, where for the first time Disney actually confronted a dead body.

Bambi was initially going to be the studio's second animated feature after Snow White, so the directors of the film are the same, David D. Hand and Perce Pearce. Music supposedly came first, most of the music to Bambi was written by Disney staff composer Frank Churchill, who was surprisingly a natural untrained musician, but late in production, another but younger staff composer (and a highly trained one at that) was assigned to Bambi, Ed Plumb. Plumb had his work cut out for him if you think about it, because he took Churchill's preliminary piano score and wrote orchestral sketches for almost the entire film, and Plumb underscored/orchestrated the violent passages like the stags fighting with the freaky visuals and the forest fire. And Plumb also did a lot of work on Dumbo. All of Bambi's music had been completed, but Frank Churchill committed suicide before the film got released. I got all this info from an article written for the Library of Congress.

Fun fact: When Walt Disney would enter the animation department, everyone would whisper “man is in the forest” so anyone who wasn’t working got back to work quickly before Disney caught them.

Well. I noticed that some hunters who go on a hunting trip mostly do it for food. But when this film was first released, it had received complaints from late hunters as Disney made them feel like murderous villains, as it was just for a season.

Thats the thing about the deer population in my area, there were predators that would hunt deer but they were also dangerous to humans and livestock so they were exterminated over a century ago and the deer were hunted out too. When people tried to reintroduce deer they had no predators so they overpopulated and starved in the winter, so regulated hunting is actually part of preserving the natural balance in my area.

"Bambi" actually didn't do well at the box office when it first was released, and the war was a part of that. It had a massive budget for the time too, so it was almost doomed to fail. However, Disney used to do re-releases into theaters before the advent of home movies, so audiences had the chance to go see "Bambi" once every 10 years or so on the big screen. Those re-releases were where it made that incredibly high profit. Makes sense when you think about the postwar optimism in America, not to mention all the baby boomers who would have been interested in watching a movie about cute animals, who then took their own children to see it as well when they grew up. The movie that really got the studio back on track financially was "Cinderella."

I love how watching an adult see this for the first time, you notice things I overlooked growing up. Like the owl ears many of the creatures he's speaking to. And in the land before time you pointed out that there were other long necks that came to eat that group of trees and they could have gone down and tried to talk to them and traveled with a group of adults. Although I think my understanding was always that they were like a random herd that was desperately surviving and didn't know about the great valley and wouldn't believe the kids if they tried to tell them. It's kind of a Lord of the rings story, or a metaphor for making it to the promised land.

Appearance Bambi is portrayed as a short, flat, left-handed farmer with slightly dark skin and eyes shaped like blunt triangles with black dots serving as pupils, holding a microphone and his cell phone (similar to an old-fashioned telephone). He wears a large green hat, which has his eyebrows on, along with a red shirt or tank top and blue overalls. Bambi doesn't have hair, arms, neck or ears; his hands just float in the air, close to his chest. His legs are also round and apparently footless. His skeleton is just a single vertical bone, but he has normal bones in his hands. In Splitathon, Bambi has a serious expression, and waves his hands back and forth. He wears blue pants or shorts, changing out of his overalls. After his verses, he eats an ear of corn behind Dave. In Shredder, Bambi uses a red and white guitar, similar to a toy guitar from Guitar Hero. In Mealie and Indignancy, Bambi has a very angry expression, gritting his teeth, having lines covering his pupils serving as white irises. He keeps his hands closed and continues to crumple his already broken cell phone. The cell phone has several cracks on the screen and film. In Recursed, when the colors change to the opponent's palette, Bambi has a white hat, shirt and microphone, while his overalls turn dark gray. His expression changes to anger. Personality Bambi is a complete hothead and corn fan, but he also seems to be pretty slow in terms of thinking quickly. He always starts off by accusing anyone who enters his farm as a "corn thief" and banishing them when given the chance (calling it blocking), even though it is hypocritical of him as he stole Zardy's farm and only had written his name over Zardy's. If someone ends up beating him, he steps back and says little by little that it's a draw, until he meets the thief again (although he gradually accepts the presence of Boyfriend and Girlfriend). Even when trying to explain, his explosive reactions and unwilling-to-listen behavior makes reasonable communication difficult. His relationship with Dave is pretty messed up. Bambi acts purely on impulse, and Dave can only talk and make Bambi listen after Bambi has already done something stupid (like breaking the very cell phone Dave bought him). Bambi mostly interrupts Dave when he says something (hanging up on him, taking his turn for himself), and it's become so normal for Dave that he smiles after Bambi takes his turn at Splitathon for the second time. In the joke songs, Bambi changes his behavior to something even more idiotic. His lines are meaningless, and he constantly proclaims himself the winner before the start of a song.

About the hunting thing: If it's responsibly done, and either to keep the population stable or for the meat I'm ok with it. And I would much rather wear something made of fur if the animal didn't suffer living in fur farms or captured in those awful spring traps, shooting the animal so it dies instantly is the most humane way of hunting.

As a hunter myself, very well said. It’s the only reason why I hunt: for meat and for the fur. An ethical hunter would do their best to make sure that the animal doesn’t suffer.

the hunters I know are very respectful towards life. The deer they kill they eat. Shooting practice is practicing to kill it as quickly as possible so it doesn’t suffer. They also don’t go for female deer in case it has a baby, plus they hunt in areas where deer are invasive to the area. I know not all hunters are like that but it seems to be the general attitude, and I appreciate that

Voice acting and music, as far as I know - always comes first. - Simple sketches called storyboards are used to describe the scene to a music writer or an actor. Then, when it's done - Storyboard is turned into an animatic - a raw, poorly drawn version of the scene with voice acting in it. An animators then go along and make an animation that is in sync with the voices and sounds, while finishing an animatic to a final product quality.

In the first Final Cut of this movie they actually had a small scene where Bambi finds his mother in a pool of blood, but obviously they decided that that was far too much for a children’s Disney movie.
