Yeah I think that’s a big part of what the show and movies are about. Finding belonging in a new family when your old one is gone or been taken apart. I was gunna say Ducky and Petre are the only ones with their full family but both their fathers are gone too. I think it’s a great movie for kids to watch. Because if they like it they’ll come back and watch it again and realise something important and thought provoking they didn’t before. It also comes across as inspirational in a way that you should carry on and never give up no matter how bad things get because they will get better.

I'm just gonna say it. The death of Littlefoot's mother hits WAY harder than Mufasa's death. Her death was followed by another emotional gut punch with Rooter talking about life and death. At least Mufasa dying was followed by the silliness of Timon and Pumbaa.

For the longest time, I never understood why Littlefoot didn't stay with Rooter after he got advice. I realized later it was Bluth's way of showing that real life is sometimes different from the movies. You often don't get a wise mentor or "adult" to help you navigate your journey through life. It was a sharp reality for a kid's film, but honesty made it so important.

This is definitely a nostalgia trip for me, but it wasn’t until I was older when I realized how dark this film was actually going to be. There are parts of the Sharptooth chase they cut out because during test screenings there were some moments that viewers thought might have been too scary (this is actually noticeable because we see Sharptooth already has an injured eye but in the next shot we see how his eye was injured). The scene with Rooter was only added in to balance out the slow descent of Littlefoot’s depression. And at one point the Great Valley was actually going to be a metaphor for the afterlife and the only way for the dinosaurs to get there was to die. Kinda glad that the film turned out the way it did instead of what it was originally planned.

That last fact is more a theory then anything else, like when Doc was introduced and the theory that he was Littlefoot's dad came soon after, if you don't why this theory came to be with a little research you'll find why and why it has evidence supporting it..

Even as a child I thought that The Great Valley was supposed to be a parable about Heaven, but I didn't know about that idea literally being a part of the movie until now!

When you think about it the Great Valley isn't so great in the grand scheme of thing. -The Mountain That Burns somewhat close to the valley. -Those smoke geysers that almost killed Littlefoot. -A pool of quicksand. -Egg Stealers and other kind of Meat Eaters their size can enter. -That part in the Great Wall blocked by a rock slide giving easy access to Sharpteeths if another rockslide hits it or an earthquake. -An active volcano on it's wall. -Relying a little top much on Thundering Falls, the main point of water, what was it again? More water than you can ever drink? 'rolls my eyes' Riight. -Fires can happen if the vegetation is too dry, or and if a meteorite falls in it. -A swarm of prehistoric locust pass and no green food on tree and bushes, unfortunate it happened but what was it once again? More food than you can eat, yes, unless nature says f#@* you. -A tornado or hurricane forming inside, one of those two can't form in valleys. -Threehorn's Peak which is another glorified volcano somewhat close to the valley. -A Big Freeze. -Smoking Mountains as a landmark to find it from the shore of the Big Water, could be dangerous. -A pool of freaking lava. -The Canyon of Shiny Stones flooding with lava. -That one tiny Longnecks cave tunnel where that Fast Biter Mother made her nest with her eggs. -Fire Mountain is more far than the Mountain That Burns, the volcano in the walls, Threehorn's Peak or Smoking Mountains but could still be dangerous. -And of course, how can someone forget the earthquakes, everytime there's one 87 % it opens an access for Fast Biters to get in. If the Great Valley is really a metaphor for Heaven then no thanks, I'll take my chance in H-E double hockey stick.

So they almost went Plague Dogs on us😭 Context and SPOILER: The 2 dogs at the end swim to the ocean to escape humans and one of them claims to see an island, loses hope, only to be encouraged by the other, so they keep swimming to it. The original ending (of the book) was that there was no island. They swam to their death. But the movie and an alternate ending gave them an island because the readers and viewers were too upset from the OG.

This movie was such a massive part of my childhood, I just remember watching it on repeat even though it was absolutely heartbreaking. This was my childhood as well! Honestly for me this movie is almost perfect, the only little tiny issue I have is how quickly they destroy the tree star. It's kind of an after thought, we don't see Littlefoot's reaction to it or anything, he never mentions it again. I know they needed to destroy, it just makes Sharptooth even more evil but I've always thought they could have done it in a different way. But again it's a very small nitpick to a perfect film in my opinion!

Much like All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Land Before Time was edited down on its footage. Some scenes felt out of place like during the first encounter of the Sharptooth (aka T. Rex) for example. The storyboard of that sequence was much different from the final version. I really wish we were able to get a re-release of this film in its unedited, uncut format.

Another big change was the order the ending happened in. In an earlier cut of the film, Littlefoot finds the Great Valley before he rescues his friends from the volcanoes and before they take out Sharptooth. He thus chooses to risk his life for the friends who abandoned him (and in Cera's case, physically hurt him and insulted him) instead of going straight into the Valley. That version also raised the stakes on eliminating Sharptooth, as they know if he lives he will invade the Great Valley and put their families in danger. In post production, they decided to change the order of events to simplify the story line.

I was obsessed with An American Tale and Fiefel Goes West when I was a kid, I adored those movies. All of Don Bluth's films are super nostalgic for me, like the Pebble And The Penguin, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, Titan A.E., Thumbelina, All Dogs Go To Heaven, they are all so amazing. They are very heavy movies for kids but I think that's why they have stuck in my mind for so long.

He took in some other young longnecks he found without parents, more and more joined, and he became leader of that herd. I grew up with this film and to this day (I'm 28F going on 29) I can never *ever* watch this without shedding a few tears. Especially in Little Foots Mothers final moments. It's such a punch to the gut. And from what I heard in the original cut a child psychologist had to come in and tell Bluth to tone things down or it would be too traumatizing for the green light, hence the addition of Grooter to comfort and console Little Foot aafter his mothers passing. Heck I heard that in test theatres some kids ran out of the room when Sharptooth came on screen!

One of the positives of the sequels is introducing Chomper, showing a different side to Sharpteeth that until him, the viewer only had the long running “ as only villains “ narrative, when, just like the flat teeth dinosaurs, they just want to eat and raise their families. Well some do.Others ARE the straight up AH villains they are usually portrayed as. The OG movie Sharptooth is arguably the meanest in the whole franchise.

When this movie came out, I was six years old and absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs. I had a huge collection of toy ones, and knew what each kind was called. Naturally, I loved the movie, though I was devastated by the death of Littlefoot's mother. Over the next several months after seeing the movie, I recreated it with my toy dinosaurs over and over, but changed the story line so that she survived and helped Littlefoot and his friends.

A few thoughts since this is one of my all-time favorites. Heck it's probably the reason why I'm a Paleo-Artist: 1) One thing you need to understand is that this movie was the second theatrical hand-drawn animated movie about dinosaurs that at least attempted scientific accuracy. The first was the "Right of Spring" scene in "Fantasia". This was a huge deal. 2) You -uh- don't really have to watch the sequels. The first one starts with the characters singing and the rest go way the eff off the rails from there. 3) Early on, you wondered if this movie about dinosaurs living their lives was going to have a narrator like Sir David Attenborough. Listen. You need to check out "Prehistoric Planet". Just trust me on this. It is basically this generation's "Land Before Time".

They are absolutely incredible and have some of the best lessons. Land Before Time, Veggie Tales, and Winnie the Pooh basically made my entire childhood and I miss watching them. Back in the year this film was released, it competed with Disney’s Oliver and Company. Don Bluth often competed with Disney after he left their animation team to build his own. Critics ultimately favored TLBT over O&C at that time.

Yeah just imagine if Bluth hadn't gotten cocky and tried to put All Dogs Go to Heaven against Little Mermaid the following year. Actually, if it had just been the other way around I'm 99% sure that All Dogs would have also beaten Oliver and Company, and while TLM would have still beaten LBT I'm pretty sure they would have been perceived as different enough for comparison to be deemed silly and so it wouldn't have been as humiliating

Speilberg really liked NIMH and wanted to get into animation so partnered with Bluth to make An American Tail which ran the same year as Disney's own mouse movie Great Mouse Detective (and only 4 year after the release of Nimh which was a rejected idea from Disney because hilariously they didn't want to make a mouse movie because of Mickey but then just a few years later found themselves making a mouse movie to compete with a mouse movie).

when i took my 4yr son to watch it back when it released I remember the entire theatre - adults and kids weeping, my son was inconsolable, i felt so guilty. Both my boys ( in the 30's) still cry at it.

The Land Before Time movies change a little bit in tone with every new movie, becoming more and more "child-friendly" each time for lack of a better word, so it's usually a personal line for everyone up to which one you find them enjoyable Personally, I totally love them up until movie 10, so I will definitely watch if you decide to react to more Land Before Time movies!! ^^ Btw, if you want to know what happened to Littlefoot's father I definitely recommend watching movie 10 at some point

X is the best sequel though and the closest to the first one in the terms of feelings, not the same sure but feelings, lots of Land Before Time fans wanted that it would had stopped there but I'm not on that side, Land Before Time XI with the introduction of Tria to finally have some character growth that sticks on a character and it being Mr Threehorn is always appreciated, he's not the same bigoted, stubborn and prideful guy he was before, nos he's just the two latter 😁.

There's only one real "Land Before Time" - the first one is in a league of its own. If little kids enjoy the others, I suppose that's okay, though having a billion direct-to-video sequels seems to cheapen the original. This is the one with the real depth and impact.

I also recall watching a lot of the sequel movies and remember that even when i was young, thy were not as good. The sequels they churned out did not have the same depth or magic that the first did, and they became very “cartoony” in my opinion. Some of them were okay lol. But, nothing like this one that i can remember!

A timeless treasure, this movie 😭 I really appreciate how straightforward it is in its sad, darker, and sentimental tones. I was definitely a Dino-loving kid, and Land Before Time was maybe the biggest viewing staple for me outside the Disney collection. And that score, man-James Horner really worked his magic. Wasn’t personally into the sequels beyond the 4th or 5th one, since they get progressively more kid friendly. But those first few installments might be worth your time. And absolutely check out Disney’s Dinosaur (2000), I’m certain you would enjoy it Btw, your vulnerability and compassion as you discuss Judith Barsi at the end is wonderful. I’m so glad as always when you’re open with your feelings

This is one of my all time favorite movies I used to watch it all the time as a kid with my grandma and being raised by a single mother littlefoots moms death always made me ball my eyes out cuz I’d imagine being littlefoot and being completely alone but when I lost my grandma who was basically another mom to me this was all I could think of even watching this commentary made me cry😭😔 I didn’t even cry when mufasa died but I’m almost 26 and I still cry😢

3:18 Unfortunately, (as far as I searched) many carnivores' bodies don't get the necessary nutrients from plants, so they would not survive on a vegan diet. Funnily enough, herbivores can eat meat just fine, so it's easier for a herbivore to become a carnivore than a carnivore to become a herbivore.

Ahhh the memories.. :) I still own my VHS tapes of these movies, I don't use them but the nostalgia hits deep. The originals/oldest ones are the best in my opinion. The 5th one is my favorite and is called "The Mysterious Island". I used to have stuffed animals of them (a certain character you have not met yet)

I remember watching this movie as a kid. I loved dinosaurs at the time (still do), I was probably 3 or 4 when it was released. I remember the scene where Littlefooot's mom died and I looked over to my parents who were watching with me, their eyes were full of tears. I was so sad for Littlefoot, I was so sad thinking about if Littlefoot were me with my mom or dad passing away, but I don't think the gravity of the first 30 minutes of the movie really hit me in the same way it did when I rewatched the movie with my own child. My parents both had pased away by the time I'd watched this with my youngest daughter, and it really ripped me apart. When Littlefoot meets "Old Rooter", and he gives Littlefoot that very beautiful speech, it settled differently with me as it had when I was a kid. I firmly believe that I learned a lot about death and grief, etc because of this movie, but in two parts. One as a child, the other as an adult and mother who has also experienced losing my parents. Seriously, Don Bluth had such a wonderful mind with his films.

My dad showed me this movie back in 2010. I was 6 back then and I was too young to understand the feeling of losing someone so I just kept watching it because I was just attached to it for Idk what reason because like I said again I was too young to understand. Year or 2 later I pointed out that the movie was on another channel and my dad happily wanted to watch it with me. I wondered why he was attached to it as well but I didn’t think about it since then I was 8 or 9 then. Then in 2021 when I started my first week of my senior year my dad was running out of ability to move and speak to me normally. I become down and worried in the next week. Then once I came home, I gave my dad a hug and said “Hey, I love you” Then I went to the living and sat down to watch memes and stuff to make me laugh and cheer me up. Then my mom came in the room with my sis on the phone. I heard her call my dads name. Then… I heard her start crying. I rushed in the room, and that was the Day on September 1st 2021 that my dad was gone. I was 17 when he died so I officially old enough to understand the feeling of losing someone. 2 years later (just 3 months before putting in this comment) I Found this movie again on Netflix. I decided to give it a watch 10 years after my last time, And I kid you not when I got to the scene where littlefoots mother died I shut the TV off so fast because I burst into tears when I found out that my dad was trying to tell me that he was going to “leave” soon. But it only took reality to tell me. So I stayed away from this movie because I didnt want to start crying and think about my Dad again. But here I am now. 19 years old and finishing the movie with you.

This movie taught me so much about unexpected death. I love older kid movies because they touch on serious topics in a raw, yet age appropriate way. Little Foot's Mom's death is, in my opinion, the most heartbreaking in animated movie history. Bambi didn't watch his mom die, and Simba didn't watch his dad die. Little Foot watched his mom die while being in mid conversation with her. And let's not forgot Rooter's advice. This movie is so deep and one of my all time favorites.

Fun fact: Ice Age was originally envisioned as a spiritual sequel to Land Before Time, before Fox closed Don Bluth's animation department and gave the film to Blue Sky Studios. I loved this series, I had them all on VHS when I was young. I realize it's unlikely you'll watch the whole series, so I would specifically recommend Parts 2, 5, 7, 8, and 10. I'll be honest, I never found Mufasa's death in Lion King even half as heartbreaking as Littlefoot's mother's. The way I see it, Simba could have just gone back home to his family had he not been scared away by Scar, but Littlefoot is entirely alone, lost, with only the hope that the Great Valley is even real and his grandparents will be there.

If you didn’t realize during that first scene with the T-Rex he actually got hit in the eye with thorns so he technically was at an advantage if you look at him closer you’ll see he almost never opens one of his eyes
