Hi Greg. Fantastic video as usual . I'm sure many people have commented to you that you are truly PROFESSIONAL! There's no doubt about it that when you do need to come back to the boring 'real world' you could easily have a very successful business in caravan conversion. Your van looks absolutely brilliant and, with your attention to detail any van you do in the future will be streets ahead of any full-time builder.

How about a tool review after the build? Go through all the power tools and interesting hand tools you've used with any good/bad you've found with them and any tools you wish you had purchased (or purchased earlier). I know you've mentioned most of the tools in individual build videos but it might be good to have them all in the one video? Really impressed with the build Greg, far superior to a commercial build imo.

Hi Greg. Thanks as always for the fantastic videos. Some videos I would find interesting are 1) fridge selection and install, 2) gas tank selection and install, and 3) a talk though on your layout selection/rational and a sizing guide. E.g depth of worktops, shower space, width of walkways, clearance etc. Cheers
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
The fridge is easy, it's just 12v only and wired straight off the battery via a fuse. I did not want the hassle of running gas and cutting huge vents in the side of the van that looked really ugly. The gas bottle housing video is still to be released. As design goes the depth of the kitchen was dictated by the cooker, it had to have min 80mm at the back so that made the worktop 530mm deep, I also cut the shower tray down to the minimum I could get away with, the room ended up 950mm x 750mm which everyone that has seen it says it a pretty good size. That left us with just a bit over 50mm between them which is only big enough for one person at a time (or two if you're very friendly) It's really about maximising the living space while making it functional too. I'll try and incorporate some of my thoughts when doing the final tour video.

Gosh Greg, you're content is always so, so well done. This installment it's no exception. The cutting board insert and counter extension turned out wonderfully. Looking forward to the videos wrapping up the build, as well as the reveal and full tour video. And, yes, a Q&A video would be great. To make it easy on yourself, have you considered using a Google Sheet to collect questions from viewers. People could submit questions via a form, and add their vote to questions already submitted. This would help to highlight the most popular questions. Google Slides has a wonderful Q&A feature, as well. I'd be happy to help set this up for you if you'd like. Just let me know.

@@GregVirgoe No worries, call em as I see em. It's a pleasure to watch someone work and create who takes pride in what they do. You see sooo much shoddy slapped together stuff when it comes to van builds - not surprising I suppose since it may be two 19-year-olds with minimal skills and so on Some of it can be straight-up dangerous, even. So keep up the good work. Sorry I can't make Camp Quirky but I'm sure your van will be a hit.

Greg, You shouldn't have to wait for the V5 back from the DVLA to get it MOT'd - with an MOT, the testing station should test it 'as presented'. So if you take in something that looks like a campervan, they must test it as a campervan, irrespective of what it says on the V5 (or the test centre computer).

I have watched the whole series on your van build and loved it and learnt so much. I have no where near the wood working skills you have but have started my own van build as I mentioned to you before I really can't justify paying these companies more than £10,000 for a bigger van build after I have seen their work, it looks nice but the insulation and finish doesn't come close to your van. I would be really interested to see a video where you talk about the different types of wood, where you use a particular wood in your build and perhaps some alternatives to furniture board, also what thickness wood you use and different suppliers? . I will use furniture board in places but not to the degree you have as I will end up wrecking it because of lack of skills. This video is one of the best, great project. Can't wait to see the finished van video. Stephen
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, that's a great idea for a video, I am by no means trained in woodworking, what I know I have learned myself from watching TV or KZbin. I practice a lot with scrap wood, making boxes out of junk plywood, like trying that router bit on scrap so I didn't mess up the actual board. I take my time, maybe too much time, I measure four times, not just twice, things still go wrong but that's part of learning and next time you do it better. :D

Hi Greg, Re the electrical wiring. You would not have needed a full roll of wiring so did you just make an educated guess on the length to buy? You may not believe but I used 3 x 50m rolls of cable in my van that's 150m of cable for power and lighting, plus 10m of 4mm solar cable, and loads of control cables. Wiring everywhere :D There was one roof batten I had to remove, it was stuck with sikaflex, I had to use a crow-bar to get it off and it broke the wood before the adhesive finally gave way.

No mad davvid, but I did save two pieces of bamboo worktop big enough to make two more chopping boards 😁 We need to be phasing our plastics and try and find alternatives. Cheers

Had a 5m RSJ delivered y'day. Took 5 of us to get into the house. Gonna need 8 guys to lift it into position - which is too constrained to be safe. Now trying to design a scaffold frame with block/tackle etc, that goes up through the joists that will allow us to lift it to the u/s of the joists and pivot it through 30 degrees when we get it there. Love to have your problem solving mind to assist.

Hi Greg, What size are your folding shelf brackets? And how far past the brackets does the extra bench top extend?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
The brackets come in three sizes mine were 30cm (12") The extension was 45cm (16") so it is longer by 10cm (4") They are super strong and will easily hold 50kg of weight kzbin.info?redir_token=Fg-ZuTuLb6yjyTAoQy1-Nk1KZjx8MTU0Mzc5MjI2N0AxNTQzNzA1ODY3&v=n1LD34oykGU&q=https%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F710-53481-19255-0%2F1%3Fff3%3D4%26toolid%3D11800%26pub%3D5575265109%26campid%3D5338027957%26mpre%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.co.uk%252Fsch%252Fi.html%253F_odkw%253Dheavy%252Bduty%252Bfolding%252Bshelf%252Bbrackets%2526_dmd%253D2%2526_osacat%253D45816%2526_from%253DR40%2526_trksid%253Dm570.l1313%2526_nkw%253Dsumnacon%252Bheavy%252Bduty%252Bfolding%252Bshelf%252Bbrackets%2526_sacat%253D45816&event=video_description

Another great video Greg. Does the shelf lock in the lowered position? Or do you have to leave it in the up position so it does not rattle around when driving?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Don, no it doesn't lock so will flop about if not secured, I plan to use a simple small roller or ball catch, even a magnet would do the job.

Those are nice brackets Greg..... I've seen a lot of Micky Mouse ones used on the big boy RV companies products. I really like how they release and lock. After it was installed how parallel is the extension to the counter top? Cheers, Scott
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Edwards, they are so strong too, rated for 50kgs They have a very slight turn up at the end by only a mm which is far better than it sagging down under the weight of the counter top. Really happy 😃

Hi there could you please tell me how you fixed the bathroom side of the furniture where there was no frame or ply hope this makes sense
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, I'll try and cover all the bases just in case. The bottoms of the walls are secured to the wood frame that tray sits on, that is screwed to the floor. The head of the walls is secured to the frame at high level by pocket screws from behind and also to wooden blocks within the high-level cupboards. The piece down the van wall is sandwiched between the two sheets of ply van lining, I fitted one sheet installed the wall then fitted another sheet and installed the other wall It's not mechanically fastened at that point but there is no way it's going to move as its totally trapped between two very large sheets of ply. The middle of this video shows how these walls were fixed kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHLHqZanip2MbK8 Hope that has answered your question.
