In this video we are introducing you to a world of templates, a new material and what we think would be the start of another interesting boat job: making bamboo countertops!
Wilda is a Schionning Wilderness 1340 sailing catamaran. She is being finished in a shed outside Melbourne. Wilda will be powered by the Sun, the Wind and the Sea...
This youtube channel is our way of sharing this project with friends, family and those interested in our adventure of building her and getting her into the water!
We are newbies to filming and video editing, but learning as we go.

Yes, Bamboo is often my first choice! Strong, resistant and grows in weeks vs years! Great choice!

Thanks 🙏 Yes, we think it will work out great. I normally love the carbonized look , but here we went with natural to keep the boat really light. More bamboo coming up.

Its also something of a natural fiber supercomposite....if treated correctly. They are experimenting with growing the giant form of it in the Algarve of Portugal.

Thanks 🙏 Yes. If we were to do absolutely everything ourselves we'd never get done. It is sometimes difficult to get help though. Either hard to find someone who can come or hard to be able to define the job. Great when we can get good help! Thanks for watching!

Bamboo is a great choice for laminate. Going to look fantastic. Also, I saw an add for Norwegian brand catamaran called Vaan. They used cork decking. Looked really good and that might be a good choice for Wilda. Keep up the good work!

@@hansh8071 thank you for the correction. Still a great looking boat they produce. They have a model that has the cork decking, it is beautiful, durable, and water resistant so it will last a long time.

Cork is amazing! We'll get back to cork later in the build. Many great properties. Anti slip, vibration/sound dampening, insulation, water resistant.. An excellent material. Even showing promise as a core material in frp sandwich panels. There is a roll of 6mm cork under the boat. Looking forward to getting into it. I'll have

It always impresses me how well you 2 work together, so very nice to see. Your work is always of the highest standard which makes your videos a joy to watch, like watching artists at work 😀 Bamboo is an interesting choice, specially with all the lightweight options available today. I know you did your homework very well on this, you always do. So now Im off to compare bamboo with other solutions. It looks great and excellently fitted, another source of pride no doubt! Well done guys! Yet again. Cheers 🍻🍻

Thanks 🙏 It's not all that light... But certainly lighter than say corian. And easier to get a hold of. There are many surfaces to choose from.. not that many that are DIY friendly.. I hope (and think) that the bamboo will hold up nicely with some maintenance. Light sand and seal every couple of years or so.

Greetings, it's Norman in Rhode Island USA....Bamboo is a strong, pretty, durable , light wood choice However it is a GRASS linear straw grain so it's a STRAW s o it's a imperative e ALL End Grain cuts MUST be completely sealed to prevent ANY AND ALL SEALED to prevent water intrusion or the water will absorb up and in then stain the boards ..... be absolutely sure you apply multiple sealant coats to all exposed MEND S,CORNERS AND EDGES that possibly harbor water or all your efforts of cabinetry will spoil !
@buildingwilda

Thanks 🙏 Yes. Super important to seal it stupidly well. Also, it expands and contracts very linearly, with the grain, and needs to be super well glued down and sealed to be able to stay in place. So far so good 😊

Good choice for the counter top surfaces. The lighter color adds contrast. Sury (Suri, Souri, Soury) expertise should help. New material, new processes, new learning curve and skills.

The bamboo should wear very well over time. It is a great light in color and lightweight choice. It would look amazing as a flooring as well. Maybe with a contrasting wood inlay every 10-12 cm. It would look like a bamboo version of teak.
@buildingwilda

It would look great as flooring, but a bit on the slippery side for a boat. We'll be working on the flooring pretty soon I hope. Thanks again

A good tip I got from other boaties. Especially in northern Oz. Trichlor tablets for swimming pools, you know, the big ones that go in the floaty thing in a pool. Put one tablet in an open container, I use an ice cream container. Then, put in each hull and the saloon. This will keep mould at bay. But be careful when opening up the boat after a long period. It will have a strong choline smell. We go to the boat almost weekly, so it's not a problem, but the boat smells more neutral. Another one is a tea tree oil based product called Environmental Air Solutions. I don't know where you would get it down there.

I’ve had carbonised bamboo flooring for 20 years. It’s incredibly robust, and environmentally sound.

I love Bamboo flooring! Carbonized has a few advantages Vs natural. I love the look of both, in the end we went with the natural to keep the boat lighter. I'm sure it will hold up. With some care ofcourse.

Hi when you set up the backing timbers for your acrylic windows how wide did you go on my plans it says to go 40 mm onto salon walks then 40 mm for attaching windows so 80 mm wide whii think looks ugly on the boat was wondering what you did cheers Greg
@buildingwilda
@buildingwilda 3 ай бұрын
We did the 80mm... From the inside it does look like a lot. For fastening, i think it is probably necessary with the 40mm... The acrylic can move quite a lot... I'm pretty sure you could get away with less overlap on the inside, but we followed the same plans.
