Its amazing how integral bananas are to literally everything in the Pacific. The coconut seems to get all the attention but it seems like bananas are the real star of the show. All the fruit also seems to find an endless supply of banana varieties and dishes throughout Indonesia and Malaysia. And to think that all we get in the western world is the stupid Cavendish!

I've also had a couple other varieties here in Canada. One was tiny and yellow Baby Nino, and the other was a smallish red skinned one. Plantains also get sold here. Don't despair. Just try looking more places.

I remember having gros michel as a kid and how wonderful the flavor was. I've had several discussions with people about the artificial banana flavoring actually tasting like banana when they said it didn't because of having gros michel bananas.

I bet if you added a bit of spiced rum and some sugar to the recipe you would have a dessert laplap. Polenta is also really filling if it is made with milk or cheese. That's the way I made it for my children. The leftovers set up overnight in the refrigerator and are great sliced and fried to have with breakfast with or without maple syrup.

Stephen has been slowly growing on me these last few years. But now, with the bowel movement cliff hanger, I'm finally all in. A taro flavored plantain polenta would absolutely satisfy me as a daily staple. I'm a little surprised condiments weren't part of the picture. Is chili sauce not popular in Vanuatu? Or perhaps this is not meant to eat as is? I know you had a short time to generate content there.

You can also use Canna, water lotus (Nelumbo sp.), and Thalia leaves like that. In southern China, they seem to wrap sticky rice in bamboo foliage for their Dragon Boar festival--seems too fiddly for me. Although among those I've grown, only Curcuma (turmeric, zedoary, green-mango turmeric, a few medicinal sp., and a bunch of ornamentals that probably haven't been tested for food safety & flavor) has broad leaves, the foliage of edible gingers could also be used, and impart more aroma (especially if used during the cooking phase).

@@tomasmondragon883 in most of Mexico, tamales are cooked in corn husks, but in Central America, it’s usually banana leaves. In some places in Mexico, foods (fish, for example) are wrapped in Hoja Santa leaves for cooking. Bananas, by the way, are not native to the Americas, but by now they are ubiquitous in all the tropical areas of North and South America and the Caribbean.

We wrap rice and minced meat inside, roll them up and then let them cook slowly in an earthern pot with ribs and other meats for the taste to develop, mmmm 😂

"sick" is not the word they really wanted to use, but "constipated" is kind of an unappetizing word to use in a food review video. Americans generally are chronically deficient in dietary fiber, eating a dish with so much insoluble fiber when you don't normally eat enough will dry out your poop and make it difficult to pass.
