From a mix of adverse weather, soaring production costs and plant disease - the production of bananas is under threat.
Pascal Liu, senior economist at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, said climate impacts posed an "enormous threat" to supply.
So, what can be done to make the banana industry more sustainable?

Here on the Greek island of Crete there are two types of bananas available. They are the usual large bananas that are on sale in most western supermarkets or the locally grown small bananas. The smaller bananas are grown here on the island so they have a much smaller carbon footprint when it comes to transportation. Even better, they taste so much better than the large bananas that are on sale in most western nations. The banana crisis is a direct result of the large growers creating a monopoly on bananas.

Yes,I have been friends with a banana grower in Australia. Like any commodity prices go up and down. When there is dirth prices are high, when there is plenty the prices are low. 2$ a box is probably the bottom end of the price range. It would have been more helpful to the audience to give the price at the top end of the market. That way opinion can be probably formed. However as is the case with all media, they presentation is never balanced.

Logistics have a lot to do with that. transport, duties, quality standards, taxes and all in between is what inflates prices so much for the consumer. Maybe the day where teleportation becomes a standard in the world where fuel prices and ship/ aircraft costs aren't a factor as well as greedy profiteers that sometimes force the market to follow suit, maybe prices will improve for all, especially in cases where a 3rd world country has to import.

My 2¢: a) Beside climate change and fair pricing, a big threat on the (world) BANANA is a fungi which has no efective preventive method today, this is vital because almost 100% of the world bananas are Cavendish, yes we put all bananas in a single basket. b) Fair pricing isn't new, Banana Republic was born from that situation. Can you believe some producers denounce them for exceding their export quotas. Me: A 🍌 fan, fto. a country that among many things also (proudly) produces bananas.

Stop growing a clonal mono-culture. This is how the Gros Michel plantations collapsed, if you have only one type of plant that has been bred into sterility and gets cloned or grafted into massive groves, it only takes a single fungal spore of the right type to wipe out the entire cutivar across an entire geographic area. We are currently repeating the same mistakes with the Cavendish. What plantations need to do is break up their Cavendish with open spaces and smaller plantings of a different variety or a different crop altogether. As for pricing, we can blame that on Eisenhower. The Banana Replublics were facing backlash from the counties they had overthrown and subjugated for over a decade, most of which had taken advantage of their democratic structure to elect leaders that would help the average citizen. Then, right about the time they were going to have to start paying a minimum wage and selling land back to the state and citizens, Eisenhower (at the request of the fruit companies) sent in troops to shoot up all of those "communist regimes" and give power back to the American-held corporations. Even though the companies have not grown beyond needing to be shadow dictatorships manipulating multiple countries to squeeze out profits, Central America is still an absolute mess thanks to all of the corruption that went on for so long.

Everything has to be independent from the outside environment, which during catastrophic weather can get quite toxic and unviable in every way. And *mixed crops, so permaculture, organic, ecological food production*. Naturopathy = natural health. Wholistic Health! Maybe I can get a spot in a banana infrastructure that is directly (underground) connected to the cacao infrastructure. Zdravo!
