Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany

Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.

On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.

To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)

Songs like How Will I Know by Whitney Houston, Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant, Photograph by Def Leppard, Take On Me by A-Ha, Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds, What's Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner, Sharp Dressed Man & Legs by ZZ Top, Back In Black by AC/DC, Every Breath You Take by The Police, Down Under by Men At Work, Let's Hear It For The Boy by Deniece Willams, Candy by Cameo, West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys, Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran, Family Man by Hall and Oates, Oh Sheila by Read For The World The Rain by Oran "Juice" Jones, Say,Say,Say by Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney, I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder, Rock You Like A Hurricane by Scorpions, Let's Dance by David Bowie, We Are The Champions by Queen, Human Touch by Rick Springfield. Yea I'm proud to be part of the MTV generation.

I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. Man, I miss the 80’s. It was far more free and relaxing than we have it now. That was a great time to be a kid.
