Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany

Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.

On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.

As a metalhead, I can say without shame that I love this song. The structure, the chord changes, the backing vocals, everything is on point.

To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)

This song was made in 1983. It got lost in tunes like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Africa" by Toto, and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by The Culture Club. But it STILL is one of the best songs of that year. It just popped into my head for no reason today and here I am 🙂 That's the power of good music. It never really goes away.

Well they weren’t exactly “carefree”. The was a major economic recession, renewed Cold War tensions, the AIDS epidemic, etc. But a lot of art at the time had a very “live for today” attitude, because any day could be your last.

@John Sluder, it seems like music back then embraced family, hope and opportunity. We had a taste of technology but we didn't choke on it like we do today. We had a sense of unity until smartphones took over. It's really sad. Human emotion is getting replaced by social media and then we wonder why our music no longer has life.

I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. So despite all the badness I had in the 1980s, I still look back on it fondly for those things and wish I'd realized back then how great it was & that they'd go.

bro its the 80s in general, theres something different about this time period and i dont know what it is. It was some sort of transition? I dont know but sometimes i get overwhelmed but looking at pictures and videos of the time. Many MANY people share the same feelings, even if they werent alive at this time. It was truly special, maybe one of if not the more significant point in history. I am truly blessed to have been able to experience it,

I just didn't realize that it was as important as it was until now. I was 14 when this song was on MTV and I knew that there was something good in the city, I just had to go find it. 80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.
