This song - by which I mean this specific version - is my favourite Christmas song. I know that the original Do They Know It's Christmas? is the most liked, but I'm not sure if it's because more people think it's objectively the best or are just influenced by nostalgia. Personally, this version is the best for me, not because it's the first version I heard, but because it's more of a rock version mixed with the pop stars of 2004 rather than an emphasis on the electronic sounds that the original and the 1989 versions had. And 2014's Band Aid 30 - I just found it comparatively boring except for Bono and Seal's singing which sadly wasn't enough to save it for me, nor even Queen's Roger Taylor on drums. With this version there's guitar work from Justin and Dan Hawkins from The Darkness (which I think worked additionally as compensation for them when Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) would've been a far better Christmas Number One the year before than Michael Andrews and Gary Jules' depressing cover of Mad World) and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Paul McCartney also returns to play bass guitar. There's drumming from Supergrass' Danny Goffey, piano work from Radiohead's Thom Yorke and keyboard playing from Sparks' Ron Mael. And I think the vocalists went really well with it, along with Bono returning to reprise his line. Also Busted were among the singers, which was a plus for me when they were my favourite band at the time (and I thought Charlie Simpson looked kind of cool at the front of them with a guitar even if he didn't record anything from it), as well as Robbie Williams who was my first favourite solo singer. And I don't even see why people were upset at Dizzee Rascal's new lines thrown in there, even when I'm not into his music at all. It's not like his lyrics were out of place or pretentious. So glad that, despite this version being rather underrated, it was still the UK's Christmas Number One in 2004. I just don't get why this video's been difficult for me to find on KZbin, even though it was published a decade ago.

Yes! Agreed. Glad others out there think the same thing. This version was nice and unpretentious, ya know? It got people singing along (again), and for its time was a modern remake of the 1984 original. I thought the singers blended well with one another, it wasn't all "listen to me-me-me" like whatever garbage they produced for Band-Aid 30 in 2014. They might produce another one in 2024 - hopefully, it follows in a similar essence to 2004.

It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time But say a prayer, Pray for the other ones At Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun There's a world outside your window And it's a world of dread and fear Where the only water flowing Is the bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring There are the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time The greatest gift they'll get this year is life Where nothing ever grows No rain nor rivers flow Do they know it's Christmas time at all? Here's to you Raise a glass for everyone Spare a thought this yuletide for the deprived If the table was turned would you survive Here's to them Underneath that burning sun You ain't gotta feel guilt just selfless Give a little help to the helpless Do they know it's Christmas time at all? Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again

I love the original, but I disagree with all the negative comments about this version. I think it's great. There is no reason not to remake such a classic for a new generation - especially if it creates awareness of the issues it represents, and raises money to help those in need. I enjoyed this (mostly) new generation of artists rediscovering and reinterpreting this classic song in their own way. And I'm sure a lot of other people also loved it. The artists performing it seemed to.

This would be my least favourite version of the song, but it's still a good version. I think the reason why the original is regarded as the definitive version by most people is because almost every individual artist who had a solo on it wasn't just known worldwide, but they were instantly recognisable (Paul Young being the only exception, but within a couple of months of the single's release, he was #1 in the US with "Every Time You Go Away"). We're talking Duran Duran, Culture Club, Sting, Spandau Ballet, George Michael, Bono - they were all among the world's biggest acts at the time, so it was a huge deal for them all to be appearing on the same song. The Band Aid II, Band Aid 20 and Band Aid 30 versions didn't have the same impact, as they all featured acts who were primarily only well-known (at the time) in the UK (which is completely fine, of course, since it's a UK appeal). It will be interesting to see who they include in Band Aid 40.
