Bono didn’t want to sing the line “well tonight thank god it’s them instead of you” but Bob Geldof knew it would have the biggest punch to the listeners. And it did. I still get chills when he sings it. A lot of people need to watch the BBC doco that inspired Bob Geldof to do something. I still remember when l was 7 when this came out and the footage of the starving children with a thousand flies around them.

Me too. It really annoys me when people criticise this line. Many people who have a house, water, food and health probably do thank God for what they have and that they are not starving or homeless etc.

This was the original charity song for Ethiopian famine relief. Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats saw a BBC documentary and called Midge Ure of Ultravox and the organized this session. The song was written, mixed, and released in about one week so it could be released before Christmas. Being number one at Christmas in the UK is a big deal and the song became the biggest-selling record in UK history. (It’s now no. 2.) We Are The World was recorded two months later and Geldof went on to organize Live Aid the following July.

Written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Not listed in Wikipedia. Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) acoustic guitar 🎸 50 musicians verify this! 😃 Strongly 💪 suggested video 📹: Northern Lights. Tears Are Not Enough 😢. Bryan Adams is 1 member of the supergroup Northern Lights. Canadian effort 🇨🇦 for Africa relief 🌍
