The song was to raise money for Ethiopian during the famine of 1983-85 caused by drought, hence why they say 'the greatest gift they'll get this year is life' and why they talk about the lack of water and food. Do they know it's Christmas isn't a judgement on intelligence, but a point about the joy of Christmas being lost due to famine and drought.

Hiya boo, so glad you did this one, I knew Bob Geldof (and his then wife Paula) who was behind this song while he was recording it and for some after and spent some time just chatting, it was a massive hit and moved a generation to think about others, the song was inspired by the massive famine that was happening across Eastern Africa back in 1983 84 and 85 and the news reals that showed children dying.

They didn't mean Africa as a whole, they just meant the countries suffering from Famine and Drought. It was a fund-raiser to help these countries.
