My best friend bought the 45 of Caught Up In You back when it was released. We were two crazy kids living in a rural Texas cow-town and this song had such a huge sound and awesome melody that I was hooked immediately. He would sing and I would play air guitar and we would magically be transported to a better place. He was killed by a drunk driver just 3.5 years later. Whenever I hear this song I turn it up, sing along, and am now transported back in time to a very happy place. Here’s to you, my brother, Cary Osman - gone but never forgotten. 😢

During the holiday season of 2005, my mother gave me a copy of *Ultimate Survivor.* I was blown away that it closed with the Survivor rendition of "Rockin' into the Night", a definitive rarity. It was originally recorded for the *Survivor* debut and left on the cutting room floor. When 38 Special grabbed it up, it was like a classic banana peel move that opened up the door to the writing of "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You". Historically, it was unprecedented for Chicago-based Survivor and a southern rock act like 38 Special to have anything to do with each other.

Adam, I’m so happy you covered my very favorite rock band, .38 Special! While I would have to say that Sweet Home Alabama is the greatest southern rock song of the rock era, and in the top 5 of all time rock songs, Hold on Loosely still gives me goose bumps every time I hear it, even now, 40+ years after it’s release. I was a HS senior when it was released and it was ‘my’ song for the crush I had for a girl from another HS whom I was so caught up in. She proved so elusive over the next few years that the line from Hold On Loosely- “if you cling too tightly, you’re gonna loose control,” was a taunt to me. Turned out that my girl wasn’t so into guys. She thought I was cute, wanted to see if it could work, but she was swinging for the other team, as it turns out, if you know what I mean. My brother, our roommate and I were all from the NYC area but we loved everything that .38 Special did, whether it was ‘Chain Lightning’ or ‘Second Chance.’ We saw the band three times in the 80’s and I just saw them last year for a fourth time. I’ve shared my love for Don Barnes and the band with my second wife and she end=joys them almost as much as I do, but when I hear ‘Hold On Loosely,’ it instantly takes me back to my teenage years and the unrequited love that never could be.

I lived in the South from 70 to 80. Southern rock was all we listened to, either on the radio or albums. The list of bands is long. At the top of the list was Skynyrd. Now I remember at the time 38 Special came out, we all thought they were the new kids playing more pop sounding stuff than what we were used to. Then we found out Donnie Van Zant was in the band and we thought they were riding Skynyrds coat tails. Now years later I bought their greatest video hits and then their Live at Sturgis DVD's and now I really like them. Strange, I couldn't stand 'em back then and love them now. Never too late. I think the artists you interview, are so grateful for the respect that comes along with a semblance of acknowledgement finally. The Beatles, and the Stones were always fawned over, with lots of admiration and plenty of stories, public and private. But a lot of popular bands that worked hard and made it on the air waves, were a commodity for the record companies, and we never heard "their story". Till now. So thnx for that !

When Rockin' into the Night came out in 1979, I was a sophomore in high school. I bought the 8 track :) and wore that thing out in my 1970 Chevy Nova. To this day, when it comes on the radio it puts me right back in that car leaving for town to drag Main and hang out with my friends. One of my core high school memories songs.

Another fantastic interview. Nice work. Peterik and Barnes were both so compelling. Hearing them talk about creating those songs gave a real feeling of the pressure these guys were under to produce quality material over and over. And they did. I've loved 38 special since I first heard them in the 80s. Well crafted tunes and that warm southern rock sound. I do wonder, though, does Don sing Second Chance live?

My first car was a 1970 Dodge Charger RT, in 1979. I put an AM/FM cassette player in it and had Wild Eyed Southern Boys in constant rotation with Johnny Van Zant - No more dirty Deals and the whole Lynyrd Skynyrd catalog. I still have those cassettes.

A friend lent me their tape in school and I was an instant fan they have a great sound. Nice to see Don is still just an awesome guy.

I’ve loved .38 Special since I was in jr high school (1982-1984)! Caught Up in You was my JAM!! Now that I’m back from visiting my sister in THE FROZEN NORTH of Vermont, I’m now ALL CAUGHT UP with your videos. A VERY HAPPY BELATED THANKSGIVING to you and your family!!

I discovered .38 Special when as a 12 year old kid listened to "If I've been the one", and later watched the video. Soon found their previous hits. I keep listening to them in my car. What a great band to enjoy. Thank you Adam! Awesome episode!

I saw 38 special in October, and they killed it!!! Still sounding great. Jeff has been retired for a bit and Don is handling the lead guitar duty. Jerry Riggs who had a couple of rockers on the Heavy Metal soundtrack is taking care of the rhythm guitar. The show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Don Barnes is still the Man!. I have been a huge fan since Wild eyes southern boys came out and the release of Fantasy Girl. I wasn’t a big fan of the album without Don on the vocals. When I think of 38 special, It has to be Don’s vocals and Jeff’s solos. He has to be one of the most underrated guitarists ever, but his solos were always well structured and clean. You’ll have to excuse me while I go listen to my old CD’s now 😎

Being from Jacksonville we were spoiled by Skynyrd, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Allman Bros., Limp Biscuit. I partied with a members from the different bands a few times. A good friend of mine dated Carol Barnes (Don's ex-wife for a time) but Billy Powell was my favorite.
