It was written for an Anime opening theme song, so it’s very purposeful in its full-throttle attack; “Let”s Go, it’s Showtime” indeed! 🔥 This song shows their development as a band - Akane’s mastery of the syncopated and ghost notes, Misa’s increased interaction with Kanami in the musical composition & arranging and Miku’s rapid development as a player who can handle more & more complex, fast & varied rhythm patterns & parts - remember, she didn’t play guitar at all until starting lessons with Kanami a few months after the formation of the band. They were definitely hitting a higher level here (mid 2019, I think) and have only gotten better and better since. Imho, they are a very special collection of musicians and we’re very lucky to have them in our world 🌍 🤘🏼😎

Oh dang, I haven't seen you bring out the bass before to try to figure out the song. More of that, please. I loved it. It's always fun watching musicians try to figure out what BAND-MAID are doing in a song. It always seems "simple" at first, until they try to replicate it, and then the true intricacy of it all comes to the surface. Great reaction & breakdown! And the Borderlands of Chaos are familiar territory for BAND-MAID these days. They have charted every inch of it.

This song is super entertaining (to me). I agree that it is on the edge of being chaotic. But that makes it fun! ) The fast pace and the constant changes make it too "intense" to enjoy by "regular means" but that appeals to intellectual enjoyment. Yes, they are good, Band Maid doing Band Maid things, their musicality always amazes me, and your not the first to say chaos, but when you listen a couple times you realize its controlled chaos, but this is what the producers of the Anime wanted, so thats what kanami gave them.

More difficult to play a rest than not and to change from down beat to off beat is just genius. I got to see Band Maid in London in 2019. It was so difficult to take in everything they did in one show, but loved it. I'm 69 and have seen more than a 1000 bands of all genres since the late 60s and they are the most exiting.

In my head I think of Band Maid as controlled chaos. So calling them chaotic makes sense to me and this song is near the top of the wtf is going on here list. They have catchy choruses and a pop feel but there are layers that need to be noticed to truly appreciate what's happening. It's not for everyone but even if you (not David specifically) don't like it you have to put some respect on it they're really putting a lot of effort into everything they do. Great review as usual. A lot of people needed some time with this one when it first came out, because of the sonic assault that it is, but the band never loses their way in a song. They can put all kinds of craziness inside of a perfectly structured shell.

You figured out that guitar pattern really fast! Impressive knowledge and skills as always. The song was used as the opening theme song for the third season of the anime 'Log Horizon'. This is about 190 BPM but they have a couple of songs hitting the 200 BPM mark, especially 'No God', but Obi-Wan-Kanami composed a 220 BPM classic with the song 'Black Hole', which they released as a double bill of a live performance with 'Manners' - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5LJamekg7iFfac .
@Metal_Auditor2 жыл бұрын
"Black Hole" is still their fastest song, but as others have mentioned, this is not meant to be a typical Band-Maid song. It was written as an anime opening. When Kanami sent the demo out, she told Miku, "If you can play this, you can play anything I throw at you." But as always, Kanami does record all the guitar parts in the studio.
@hoges4122 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's a track you have to hear a few times until you fully appreciate its complexities. By take 3, I'd decided it's one of their best works. The live acoustic version takes it to another dimension. David, I've been having a bit of fun trying to second guess your scores. I reckoned you'd give this an 8.2, so you've raised me a percentage point. I feel good about that. 😎

My understanding is Kanami plays all the studio guitar stuff. She makes sure Miku can play it before hand because she has to do it live, but Kanami can nail it in the studio in a couple takes. Time is money.

Hello David, just as an observer of the band, to me "Different", as some have already commented, was a bit of a forerunner to a developing sound that the band would introduce us to with their Unseen World album. Their previous album, Conqueror from 2019, showed that Band-Maid would continue to explore new sounds. But, although there wasn't any hint of which direction the band would take us, Different turned out to be a precursor for this new chaotic sound they would explore. Something they do masterfully on Unseen World with songs like No God and Giovanni. For my part Unseen World was and is a masterstroke mix of sounds and genres... but retaining the core Band-Maid layering. I have a lot of admiration for Different and the Unseen World album and am curious to see what they follow up with now after that COVID isolation album. I really enjoy your honest reviews. Thumbs up.

I can still remember when I started the song for the first time. Already after a few seconds I paused it and went to the kitchen to make myself a coffee. In my head I was thinking "what a chaos" and I felt run over. However, while I was standing at the coffee maker though, with these thoughts in my head, my feet were apparently of a different opinion. They seemed to like what they heard, because these had already internalized the melody and were moving to it. Then I knew that in all the chaos must be hidden something interesting. And what can I say, back to the video and starting from the beginning, I had quite my fun with it, which was even increased after a few times listening. Akane's work in this song is also what stands out the most for me, and probably the part that my feet liked the most. :) I think most of us Maidiacs should be able to live with your score, as I haven't seen anyone name 'Different' as their absolute favorite. It's good, but that's about it. Thanks for this video, and until next time. _____________________ 「 _'Our rock never dies ever. Forever!'_ 」 --- from *BAND-MAID* 'Manners' 🕊️

This one took me a couple of listens to get. I wasn't a huge fan in the beginning, but it certainly grew on me and I do enjoy it quite a bit now. It's like the song slows down after a couple of listens. Some of their newer songs are more in this style, but they took me less time to get. Probably because I got used to the more chaotic style. Not all Band-Maid fans are necessarily a huge fan of this newer controlled chaos style of some of their newer songs and I can understand why even though I do enjoy them a lot myself. Sense is an other of the more chaotic songs they have done and it's not a surprise since it's also an Anime intro. I think the more chaotic songs do fit anime intro's pretty well and it might even have been in the "job description" from the producers of the show. And yeah, Black Hole (like others have mentioned) is an other one of the more chaotic songs, but that one has no connection to any anime (but it's obviously about a chaotic phenomenon).

Hi David. This song isn't my favorite bandmaid song either, maybe because it's an anime song, but I'm a big fan of drumming, especially Akane's. The various rhythmic patterns, pause and syncopation bandmaid adopt in many of their songs are the sort of things that make me love this band SO MUCH, although there are other things I also love. So while this isn't my no.1 bandmaid song, it's still in my top 50 I'd say.

I'm glad you're one of the normal American "1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a" types and not one of those freaky Eastman types who count "1 ti te ta 2 ti te ta 3 ti te ta 4 ti te ta". Damn commies. This was a commission for the opening of season three of Log Horizon. The story Kanami related in one of their interviews around the time this came out; she gave the producers five demos and they chose the most frantic and chaotic one. They obviously wanted chaos; they wanted her to walk right up to the very edge of the cliff. MISA and Akane said they actually dialed it back a bit for this one. "Screaming" is the B side to "Start Over" and their fans would say it was their most chaotic song until this one came out. You commented about the off beat (or up beat) on the snare; it gives it a tarantella feel. I feel like Akane switches up the feel quite often in their songs. She won't necessarily repeat a pattern in a verse, or use the same pattern in the second verse, even in their slower, more rock-based songs. But this song definitely takes several listens to grasp, for sure. One thing I really like; because it's an opening song for a show, there isn't a real guitar solo ... Kanami plays a riff in the background during the break ("devil or angel"), then everybody drops out except the vocals ("you can't back out now") and she's still playing that same riff, then when the song goes back to the break ("once more") she plays a very bluesy solo behind (or on top of) all the other chaos. It's kinda out there, and it's perfect.

Using Band Maid official video's have less chance of being blocked than if you use something uploaded by someone else if it is from one of their DVD's, many of these video's themselves rarely last long before being taken down along with many reactions to them. Usually safest bet is fan cam stuff but that is usually crappy quality anyway but overall it depends on the band and Band Maid is more lenient than many others (like SCANDAL or Gacharic Spin).
