"It's gonna be okay." Yes it is. Band-Maid survived and thrived largely because of sharing of videos. The stuff on their channel is a good bet. The maid outfits are not intended to restrict them to a pop genre, but rather to contrast with their harder rock sound - i.e. the opposite. This song is about personal freedom, basically saying "I am me, I will do things my way, and you can accept me as I am or go away." Delivered with determination, triumphantly and with joy. An exultant song.

In 2016, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin caught a performance of Band-Maid in Tokyo and asked for a photo-op with their drummer, Akane Hirose. Reportedly he told her that she was like a reincarnation of John Bonham. For those who don't know, BAND-MAID played in the Classic Rock Awards 2016 and received the Japan Next Generation prize. After the show Jimmy Page, asked Akane for a photo.

You are right. They do have the poppy vocal melody and that's part of their sound. Every member of this band has the different musical influences and preferences and they work really hard as a team to put those different elements together seamlessly. About Saiki turning her back towards the audiences... it's also part of what band-maid is. The fans enjoy the way the closeness and fun the band members share. It's infectious...to the fans. You are also right about how they don't overplay. It's because they put music as their top priority. They do have show-off pieces but not always, their focus is to create a great music, which means that their song can be basic or technical, soft or hard, slow or super fast, simple or complex all depends on the type of song (although if you use a good headphone you'll pick up the sneaky riffs and details more clearly). If you want to be blown away, there are songs like No God, Giovanni, why why why, black hole etc that have grunge, or progressive edge (and metal, of course). Without holding back is an instrumental that I think you'll enjoy. Freedom in my opinion is a very fun song that puts me in a good mood. The drum work is not particularly technical in this song, play, blooming even their earliest composition 'alone' has more complex drumming. Well... there are heaps more with amazing drumming, really creative guitar/bass work and heart melting solos. Just you haven't heard them yet. That being said, it's band-maid, so there will always be the catchy chorus no matter what unless it's instrumental.

2 things people dont pick up on, MISA sings a backing vocal line , and she plays bass chords in the final chorus breakdown. Also her bass lines a Bac- like in some fills. And the transition from drum solo into gtr solo , genius !

Yesss, I have been waiting for this reaction !! Because Freedom is one of their earlier songs and at that time they got some outside help to write their music. I suggest then listening to Band-Maid - Real Existence (Official Live Video). Also, I recommend listening to Band-Maid - Play (Official Live Video). Band-Maid loves to add things extra to their songs that cannot be found on their studio recordings. You will not regret ;) Last thing, Band-Maid does NOT block reaction videos because they want many people been able to access easily to their music. They have only blocked Onset so far, but that was because previously someone released/leaked it before Band-Maid had the chance to release it themselves. Now it is all good! ;)

What was creative in this live performance was, after the drum solo, it didn't switch immediately into the guitar solo, but they created a "transition" that led into the guitar solo. A typical band would have just gone straight into the guitar solo after the drum solo.

I should but don't know these girls names. The one in the front middle who is playing a guitar is the one who was suppose to be doing all the singing but she can't hit the higher notes. She is the one who created this band and brought everyone together. She also wanted everyone to wear maid outfits and in their first video most were wearing them. But then the lead vocals and the bass player decided they wear not going to but still wore dresses.

The fans know what is going on when they surround Akane. They are making funny faces with each other to throw each other off their step or beat. Loser breaks down laughing and/or messing up. This is called Hengao (translated - strange faces) - the Japanese art of making "strange faces". FYI, Po! This is probably one of the rare times that purposely placing one's back to the crowd is anticipated, therefore, is ok for a prolonged period of time because comedy may happen. BTW, some say that Akane is the best at winning, thus, keeping her beat. Saiki is surprisingly the weakest, even though her persona is like the ice queen (softest heart), Po!

Miku on occasion will sing lead for a few bars and there is one live show in Amsterdam where Saiki was being held up by the audience and carried around lost her shoes and Miku had to sing the last part of the song. Miku also has Miku's Magic Time for audience participation and 4 solo songs. Miku's magic time videos are generally fan made and is to give the band a rest on their typical 22 song concerts. Miku is the lyricist, she write all of the lyrics to these awesome songs.

Yes, you are right. The pack of the voices is usually very catchy and both layers (lead and backing) are written with style and pop hooks. And miraculously, they fit extraordinarily well over instrumental layers that are often very complex and can range from funk to speed metal (sometimes in the same song). It is as if the voices were surfing over the turbulent sea of instruments showing an awesome show that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Four minute MISA bass solo going on here. Band Maid write quite a bit of songs with a J-Pop "hook", but knock that J-pop edge off with great drumming and guitar shredding, keeping a herd rock groove, never letting the J-pop take over. The "interacting" with the drummer (Akane) is a game they play quite a bit in live performances called "Hengao" (the art of making faces)..... they try to make each other crack up. Akane actually cracks up Saiki (lead vocals) in "PLAY" from this same concert.....very fun part and you can hear Saiki stumble just a bit. "PLAY" is my recommendation for your next react.

During the chorus Akani uses a eighth note high hat back beat that kind of gives it a bit of a disco or j-pop groove. (The guitar and base drive through it on the beat.) Akani wraps it up with three deadened eight note crashes. The next part seems to have a bit of a 8/4 on the one groove underneath. To my ear, the harmony singing on the chorus has kind of an late seventies American pop hard-rock anthem feel to it.

Miku (rhythm guitar) actually used to be the singer, but she didn't feel she could project the right sound, so she fired herself and they had auditions and hired Saiki. You are thinking too much in drawers and genres! Just saying, still a thumbs up, but you should try to focus pure on the music and not thinking: Is it now rock, pop, metal? These are females in maid-outfits, they are good FOR females (no they are overall great)... Stop it! They are a hardrocking all female group with almost their own genre... They have blues, rock, hardrock, punk, pop, metal, funk, jazz in their repertoire and not afraid to use 4-5 genres in ONE song, nobody does it, so it´s unique and maybe a little bit unusual, but that´s your fault. Like i said, don´t try to put them in an corner, genre or whatever it changes your perspective. I know it´s difficult, it´s an "western culture" thing to put everything into classes, genres, drawers or anything, but i got rid of it a long time ago and it saves a lot of nerves and you will never miss something in your live because you are openminded! Don´t wanna be rude, sorry if it sounds like this, i am german and always direct, hope it´s fine... Just wanna mention something, that´s all. Greetings!

Unusual for Band Maid to have a drum solo, so you did well to pick this one to react to (I know you get many, many requests) Band Maid have grown in confidence over the years. I have several clips from their earlier shows and although still good, they didn't have this level of confidence and crowd support. You will be hard pushed to get a poor Band Maid, song in my view. As you may know, their early material was written for them and in general had a more JPop sound. These songs still rank highly amongst Band Maid fans but the later material, which they wrote themselves, has a very strong following.
