Again, my three favorite reactor quotes from Band Maid's "early years" (2016-17, in this case): (a) "Oh c'mon, that's not really them playing those instruments" {Well, my guess is "Yes"}; (b) "They'll never be able to keep this up -- women have no stamina" {They're in their 10th year as a band, and the concert that this song came from was 3 1/2+ hours long and contained 33 songs...}; (c) "Man, they go for every cliche in the book" {There is a difference between creative integration of your own stylings and iconic formats. as compared to enslavement to historic formulas, without the injection of any meaningful form of creativity by the artist/performer}. Band Maid honors tradition, but is constantly evolving in terms of form, content and technical performance. They are not close to "plateauing" (peaking) yet. Band Maid Forever!!!!!

Band Maid being Band Maid at it's finest !!!!!! If you noticed,,,,after covid, Akane's speed has grown tremendously. She spent alot of hours being the kit working on her double bass skills....and now she is really on another level. I am a drummer and can tell you her feel, touch and precision is second to no one !!! And I don't know how.....but she always finds the perfect beat or fill that totally fits the song.

While they are all great musicians, I have long felt that MISA is in the conversation for best rock bassist in the world today. Re. Miku, her rhythm line during the "conversation" also adds a huge element of energy and anticipation, as she takes the chords higher and higher--but people miss is unless they are listening for it.

I totally agree. Saiki-san is never awkward on stage hence that level of comfort the audience always feels with her. It also helps that she's rarely off key! She's really amazing that way.

One thing I love about Band Maid, when it's time for the members to do their solos, they don't take it overboard. The solos are always tasteful and always stay within the song's main melody line, unlike in other rock bands when the solos go off in so many different tangents that it they don't feel like it's part of the song anymore.

What many people fail to hear is during the "Conversation" Miku joins in, in the left channel part way through, after Kanami's second "Interjection", playing octaves to Kanami's guitar. Then as Kanami went head to head, Miku mirrored Kanami's riff, leading to a much fuller sound.

The looks of excitement on your faces when you simultaneously realized it was another "conversation" between Kanami n Misa was priceless! On Saiki, their latest vid, Endless Story, is the finale of their 10th anniversary tour. She really cranks it up a few notches and it is, without a doubt, her finest and most heart-felt performance. **VERY IMPORTANT** When you react to it, you MUST have the closed captioning ON in order to know what she is saying to the crowd in order to get the full understanding of the situation. I watched my DVD of this concert yesterday and made it a point to focus on Akane exclusively. Needless to say I was in awe of her performance. It was 33 songs worth of absolutely beautiful and powerful drumming and she was smiling from ear to ear the entire time. 😁

Thanks for the reaction and comments. Good to see you gents reacting to Band-Maid again. This is the ultimate F*Off song, composed and performed only the way Band-Maid can. Saiki was definitely on FIRE throughout the entire concert, as were all the ladies. What's criminal is that these ladies don't have a greater fanbase around the world. You can't just take 2 guitarists and throw them together and be able to perform at that level. They're in each others heads and actually talking in a way only they know. It's magic.

In the Tokyo Garden theater show there is a spectacular bass and drums introduction to this song. In fact, they always change the arrangements in some way.

In an interview, Saiki explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it.😏 "はて?" can be translated as "What?"😉

I saw Band-Maid live on October 21, 2022 which was a month after the Unleash EP was released. I was hoping that Band-Maid would play Hate? but it was not part of their 18 song set. The song would make its live debut less than a week later in NYC. The Dallas show confirmed that they were a very good live band. I knew they would improve, but I had no idea how far and fast that improvement would be. I watched their August 2023 Lollapalooza performance on television and I was blown away (Hate? was a big highlight). Move ahead almost 4 months to the huge Yokohama Arena show and Band-Maid proved themselves to be a great live band that now belong in front of crowds in the tens of thousands. When Saiki heard this song as an instrumental (which Kanami wrote during the dark early days of the pandemic), she thought Kanami, along with Akane, had put a lot of anger into it. Kanami denied it was an angry song, but Saiki wrote the lyrics with that theme, to say the least. When I first heard the song and deciphered the lyrics, it gave me Carly Simon "You're So Vain" vibes. I agree with y'all's interpretation that the song is not really about real hate, but it is about the rage felt when suffering the ultimate betrayal by the person you love. The over the top, and at times amusing, lyrics are very much verbal revenge resulting in nuclear annihilation of the relationship (I watched Fallout, so nuclear annihilation is on my mind).

Great reaction guys and Saiki wrote the lyrics. There was a lot of cheating occurring during covid lock down in the press at this time and Saiki was pissed. The singer LISA (a friend of Akane) was also affected by this as her husband was caught cheating and created a big scandal.

Regarding the lyrics, I strongly disagree with your takes. Despite the (ironic?) question mark, I think it's very clear there is no remaining love for the subject of the song. It is as clear a f@#!-off song ever written. If there is any self-reproach it's that the narrator put up with the garbage as long as she did. As for whether this was a woman telling off a man or not, it's pretty obvious throughout -- from Miku's "Why don't you try to understand me?" to the cutting and hilarious "ten minutes of limp gymnastics". A fantastic song, with brilliant performances from every member of the band. The best break-up song ever.

That's no conversation. That's an argument. Put into the context of the song and its lyrics, this is an argument between the guy (bass) and the girl (guitar). The bass starts the argument, the guitar answers back, the bass says something smart, the guitar mocks the bass by copying the same riff right back, then the argument becomes a shouting match that ends with the guitar (the girl) having the final word ending the argument. Saiki then finishes the song with one final tempered angry Lalalala, LALA LALALALA!!!! I HATE YOU! DON'T GIVE A SHIT NO MORE! 😂😂

Saiki wrote the lyrics and she is pi$$ed. Some different back stories as why she wrote it. One story is she wrote them after a friend's husband cheated. Another is more personal, I understand she''s had problems with men. Japanese culture has a problem with strong, independent women.

However, we have not felt that their songs lost structure or are chaotic in a negative way at any time. We've loved all the songs we covered. B-M are one of our favourite bands.

At most I'd say their later catalog is generally proggier or more interactive or matches different moods. If that's not your cup o' tea, that's totally fair. But Kanami rarely deviates much from traditional song structures: you're always going to get clearly defined verses, choruses, bridges, a solo or two, intro and outro, etc.
