I grew up with the Beatles and all the great 60's bands. Band-Maid are, to my ear, the most creative (in a good way) band since that era. And they are technically better musicians than most of those bands were. People who don't know think I've lost my mind when I say that, but I'll stand by it.

It just takes time I guess. Every weekend I watch live video of band-maid with good stereo cranked up to max. My partner initially didn't understand my addiction to their music but more I played their songs the more he appreciated the genius of band-maid music.

Unfair Game, very emotional and crazy playing, I love it. Forgot to say, Kanami is a brutal shredder.
@kaazan13 жыл бұрын
Matchless Gum is generally underestimated, but in concert, it is one of the most exciting, Misa changes the sound of the bass in this song and literally makes your bones vibrate. Miku guitar becomes a turbo engine in max distortion. Saiki is crazy in concert in this song, when she comes back after Kanami's solo she is like an angel taking you back from hell, I don't know how to explain it but it was very emotional. The record may sound simple, but in concert, it has a devastating effect. In concert songs like Matchless Gum, Yolo, Shake That, Brand New Road, Rinne, Chose Me, Wonderland, Puzzle, have an effect that cannot be understood from a video or a record. I mean these songs are concert songs, not that they are better than others. Always priceless your evident sincere emotion in your reactions, you are the best and the most sincere.

@@lurkmerchant I have seen Band-Maid live three times, I can tell you that the sound is incredible I felt Misa even in my feet coming out of the floor, Akane in my bones. Thanks to my friendships with the organizers, I was always upfront against the stage. During Shake That Akane was really wild she looked like a little girl who enjoys breaking everything with hammers she bent support of a tom, I thought the tom would soon roll around the stage. Only in concert, you can really hear what Miku does with that damn guitar, it's a disgrace that in the videos and in the records Miku is always low, I don't understand that. In the instrumental song Onset, Miku really rocks you, but in the videos, it doesn't seem like it. I could mention a lot of songs where Miku really adds a lot to the sound wall, but you can only hear this in concert. Saiki also loses a lot in the videos, she in concert is really crazy, she has a unique natural intonation, and a presence like few can, even if she is small very small I think 160 cm at most and will weigh 45 kg at most, she fills your attention and kidnaps you in the song and at the end of the concert, you will be in love with her without escape.

There is a live version of Matchless Gum on here now.If you haven't seen it, you should check it out.Miku uses some kind of effect on her guitar at times that sounds really badass. This shows that Kanami is a mad scientist and the reason this was under the radar because these songs were way ahead of their time and Miku at that time wasn't still as good as a guitar player than she is right now. That's one of the reasons they didn't play these songs live as much, especially Unfair Game which fits in Unseen World. Kanami at that time is like: "Miku is still not ready for this song." But she is more than ready now, hopefully they'll play it live soon.

I get psychogenic shivers in nearly every Band-Maid song. It’s like a music-drug they fiendishly inject into their music to keep you addicted… in a good way, of course. The first couple that come to mind at this moment are: Matchless Gum - the classical-like passage with that hunting chorus pedal and low bass effect just after the solo - especially the last two chords with the counter bass notes. It’s chilling; and, the way Saiki soulfully attacks the first word “ I “ in the last lines of the official Choose Me MV, “I cannot wait forever…” combined with the raw, tribal drum and funky bass pulls. Pure rock phrasing. She only does it in the official MV. Thx, Ryan!

I love "Unfair Game", which has everything I love about Band-Maid, and features one of the longest and best Mincho solo. The surreal solo is a journey itself, sounding like a rocket roaring into outer space, propelled by Akane's double booster engines! Although this song was released in Nov. 2016 as a single B-side, it can fit into the vibes of Unseen World without feeling out of place. (It feels like a spiritual precursor to "I still seek revenge") I really look forward to the triumphant return of this head banger in future live performances, plus Yuragu from Brand New Maid album. (I miss the mesmerizing Miku-Saiki vocal duet so much...)

Nice! Great review and reaction! I used to say there is no need to recommend a Band-Maid track, just randomly select one and you are guaranteed to hear something great. That is not to say you do not hold favor for some over others. It's hard to believe such a band exists! And thank God for that. I'm willing to bet if Band-Maid were tasked to write a song in any genre they not only can pull it off but add a new element to that genre that was never thought of. The scarry thing is it may possibly become the best song of that genre. Who would bet against them pulling it off?
@cembor3 жыл бұрын
Matchless Gum - such an AWESOME deep cut B-side track. Yeah, it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it as well. I still remember the first time I heard it and the reaction I had was similar to yours. This track is WAAAAAAAY too short though for that BAD ASS groove that the THUNDER BUDDIES are laying down with that driving bass and drum. Kanami is open strumming much of this as well. They have only performed this song a handful of times live, Zepp Tokyo in 2018 and the 2019 fall/winter tour that I know of off hand. The 2019 performance of it was extended as well from what I've been told by people who were at that show. The forced post-prod vocal fry of Saiki is what really seals the deal for me on this song... which they also did for the 2018 Zepp show. Such a great track and the main riff from MISA and Akane is just sooooo choice. Unfair Game - again, another awesome deep cut B-side. Just another example of Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things, LOL. For me what really sells this song is the vocals, Saiki is so on point on this song and Miku's harmonies just elevate her to another level. If anything, this song really demonstrates the humbleness of each member. Everyone has a chance to shine and everyone is playing to support the overall song and move it forward. Speaking of Forward - another great song no one reacts to and early/deep cut as well. I think what you're realizing now that you're delving into the older parts of the catalog are that they have been doing what you heard in the more recent stuff all along and that the recent stuff is just an evolution of that. The fact that you're still engaged, surprised, and enjoying the older stuff is a testament to the product that they put out. Also realize that some of this was not written by the band but that they did have some collaboration on the recording/arranging/writing. Btw - the drawing looks great and Gary's treatment looks good as well. Also - how's the elbow coming along? All good?

(It was followed in the set by Awkward, a song that you'll probably have a similar reaction to as Matchless Gum (and like Puzzle, the live version sounds better than the studio)). You're getting to that point in Band-Maid's catalog where you start to realize the reason that a song hasn't been recommended is because this band just has too many like that - the relentless quality of this band's songwriting (and quantity), coupled with their musical diversity, is what I think makes this band unique among the heap of other similarly mega-talented bands out there. Unfair Game came out a little over 5 years ago. If you look at the sheer amount of great music this band has produced in the short time since then, it's mind-boggling (4 major albums, not to mention a Band-Maiko mini-album). Such a shame that more rock fans around the world simply have no clue who they are (I was one of them a mere year ago).

Thanks for another weekend treat. Hope it's been the same for you. God, suggesting songs are the hardest part. It's just that there are too many. One and only, turn me on, don't be long, anemone (studio ver.), you, awkward, page, catharsis, wonderland, youth, Mirage, liberal, endless story, clang, screaming, freezer... There are songs that are dismissed by fans because they sound "too poppy" such as Be OK, Start Over but I like these songs. I know there are still more I forgot to mention here. 😅 If you love the band, consider signing up with band-maid prime, where they upload many live footages.

The most old school song that has a video is “Before Yesterday”. It’s different and it documents their first trip to the U.S. for Sakura-Con in Seattle. That trip is supposedly what convinced MISA to not leave the band.

This is up there with the Turn Me On solo. Which to me is one of their really overlooked gems. Don't Be Long Instrumental as well is highly overlooked.

From the day I first heard matchless gum it has been my favourite BM song. I love everything since but it still does something to me that is hard to explain. It literally feels like a cult movie that people just keep going back to.

I'd agree. Love Matchless Gum!! Most people just suggest what everyone else always has, but literally all their albums from top to bottom are just as good or better than the few songs people suggest. They're the only band I have ever seen that has managed to do that.

The first song that really caught my attention of Band-Maid was the song "YOLO". It just appeared on my screen as a KZbin advert. I soon bought the single CD, and with it came the 2 above songs. I especially enjoyed "Unfair Game", which I thought should have been included in one of their albums. I really got into the end part of the guitar solo where Akane (drums) syncs with Kanami (lead guitar). Kanami really goes crazy. Misa's thick bass provides also the "Meat" in the song!

Unfair Game is definitely one of their craziest songs. I think the same thing: this song and also Matchless Gum should be included in the album Just bring it. Great day

It's crazy that a band who intentionally tries to be experimental doesn't write more crappy songs (yep, we tried this - didn't work). I'm pretty picky about the music I like, but it can't find more than 2 or 3 songs from Band Maid that I personally don't care for. That's insane out of a catalog of over 100 songs. For another face-melter from the same era as these, you gotta do "Shake That".

Glorious Kanami... one of my fav moments of Kanami... My 3 fav Kanami Solos: "MATCHLESS GUM" (both), "Daydreaming" and "Alone"... oh and "REAL EXISTENCE" yeah those 4 are my fav 3.... and "Yolo" ... god... this happens every time with Band-Maid, I give up trying to select favs and tops ... Awesome piece of art too (and now I'm just talking about your drawing), Awesome! "Unfair Game" is another awesome song as well as "Hide and Seek"... there is only one song from Band-Maid that I don't like and even that one, I love it! (Here's a little non-sense but it's almost 6AM and I'm finishing drawing works for the night...)... oh the one that I don't like but love it anyway is called "Ai to Jonetsu no Matador" and comes as an Bonus track in the remastered first mini album "Maid In Japan" (2014). Cheers! Thumbs Up! BTW, since you need to react to "MATCHLESS GUM" again, try to find the live one that is out there somewhere!

Love that you explored the much underappreciated Unfair Game, and a great reaction/technical breakdown as always - not sure if you've checked out another underrated classic of theirs - "Fate" - a brilliant old-school chugging classic rock anthem - if you like Manners, you'll love Fate - there's an audio recording on their YT channel and you may find their official live version on Bilibili... also check out "Rock in Me" if you want a taste of what Miku's original vision of the band might sound like - a Miku-lead burst of brilliant power pop with that unmistakable Band Maid sound - again, an audio recording can be found on their YT channel - there are some fan-made live videos on YT but most don't do the song proper justice

Matchless Gum has some of the wickedest hooks you'll find anywhere; and, yeah, Unfair Game definitely needs more PR, it's an incredible rock song. If you don't mind doing album tracks, maybe Alive-or-Dead or Spirit!! from World Domination (on the official channel). I'm sure you know by now that you can get a lot from offshore sites, but we want you to keep your channel!

I wonder if Kanami listens to Robert Fripp or King Crimson? Sure getting a bit of a Crimson/Took vibe. Been listening to a lot of really good Japanese bands but the Maids always stand out. The chemistry and superb musicianship along with incredible song writing and production clearly sets the Maids apart from 99% of the bands out there. They never cease to amaze me.
