A 'one man show' is a concert with only one act. It's a big event in a small bands career. Bands in Japan usually start at the bottom of a bill - say four bands playing and you are on first (before the crowd even fully arrives). But, it's common in Japanese live houses to be asked which band/act you have come to see, and they write it down. As your band gets more crowd you move up the bill. Until one day, you can draw a big enough crowd to do your first 'one man' show. Just you playing, no support. Band-Maid Nippon was a radio show (not an anime) aired during the pandemic featuring Miku and Saiki. Just them, no host. Akane did guest on a few episodes. About the advert for Band-Maid the label put out to form them and mentioning about Maid outfits. Miku was once asked how many people replied to the advert. She said - "none".

Enka is a genre of Japanese song with a characteristic slow vibrato It was the first genre to combine the Japanese pentatonic scale and Western harmonica. Researchers believe that the closest analogue in Western music is the "Country" genre.

Thanks Tim, and Bruno! Just some random thoughts as I watch along: When asked about her father, she says he "flew away", keeping up with the pigeon motif. Also, it's interesting that so many of Band-Maid's members have a sibling much older than them. Miku was encouraged to go to the city by a man who goes by the stage name Nesmith. He is also for Kumamoto and was in a group called "Exile", a very succesful 17-member boy band. He has a tv show now and sometimes sends congratulations and things to Band-Maid on social media. Miku's real name and voice at 20:32 :) There is a suprisingly large amount of Lil' Cumin videos on KZbin. Regarding people who auditioned for the band, I only know of one: someone on Twitter (who is now an investment blogger) claims she auditioned for bassist. This would be a really weird lie. For one, she gained nothing from it; hardly anyone has seen the post even now and she hasn't gone on about it trying to get clout or followers or anything, so I'm inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. The video you mention at 32:16 was shared by Akane on Twitter and it's the only clip of that show available. At one point, a user found a hidden video on Band-Maid's channel entitled VTS-01-1 which was never-published footage of a show; there are probably a lot more treasures there as well. I hope one day we get to see some huge archive, like a dozen Blu-Rays of never-before-seen recordings that we aren't even aware of. I'd hate for all those videos to go unseen forever. Great point about how important their struggles may have been. I think you nailed it. Their attitude is one of the things I love most about them. I think the world would be an incredible place if everything thought the way the members of Band-Maid seem to. They never once think they should be given anything, they are appreciative, supportive, and while they take their job very seriously, they still have fun with it. And they don't take themselves too seriously. They're essentially the opposite of most people. If you don't know who he is, it might seem weird to have this "t-shinji" guy in the middle of Miku's documentary. But t-shinji is a complete legend and hugely important to the entire Band-Maid community. He's earned his place here many times over and I think most people would agree it was great to hear from him here. Thanks again! Looking forward to the next one!

Ohrenje has hooked up with Numu, a Japanese artist who loves Band-Maid and who draws anime like characters for these documentaries.

Here is a Bond fact to blow your mind if you do not already know - Monty Norman wrote the James Bond Theme based on a song he had already written for a musical (based on a novel by an Indian novelist). This is "the original Bond song": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWeopq19na6siLM&ab_channel=Bondfinger007 (Tell a kiwi or kakapo that a Norwegian said "hi")

9:00 Almost all idol groups in Japan are corporate created and don't compose their own songs. Some write the lyrics, and few of them play instruments. 25:05 "Band-Maid Nippon" was a regular radio show during the pandemic hosted by Miku and Saiki. 26:00 In a radio interview, Miku said about the audition "Nobody showed up, PO!" I don't know if she meant no talented person or literally nobody showed up for the audition.
