video #2: • pt2 Band-Maid "Onset" ...
In this video I react to Onset by Band-Maid. It is a live recording of them in concert. It's the first instrumental by them that I've reacted to.
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on KZbin. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- unitil now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

About two years ago I stumbled across Band-Maid while at work one day. After watching every last official video on their channel multiple times, made my first iTunes purchase EVER (and first money spent on new music in DECADES) I called up a friend of mine who had played guitar professionally in Japan back in the 90s. "Dude, I just found THE MOST AMAZING Japanese band! and they're all girls! and all dressed up li...." "Oh, you found Band-Maid, here, let me send you a link" ONSET. I think I cried...

They are the reincarnation of musicians from the past, reviving quality music that has begun to be buried. They are the hope of the future music. More react will be amazing! Thanks for react to Band-Maid, Mr Dean Wolfe

Something to note, is Japanese bands are not at all shy about crossing genre boundaries. While the Japanese music market is segmented, their doesn't seem to be anywhere near the hostility between segments of the listening market that you get in the United States. In the U.S. quite frankly there are a lot of "no goes" within the various musical genres. One crowd doesn't listen to this, the other crowd doesn't like that. Having unexpected elements and novelty are mostly seen as positive Japan, while in the U.S. forget about getting air play if you challenge the genre boundaries. Of course even in Japan there are limits to how much genre boundary crossing can be done. That is especially prevalent in the big money pop market. They don't want to invite a large negative reaction.

Far from the content of the music, even if a man dresses as a woman and sings, it's just fun in Japan, and no one is happy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWjEoaiEn66Fm5I

@@yolandria Thank you for your reply. "88 Pilgrimages" happened to be found on KZbin. I also like this. It's not just weird, it's not musical. There is an air band called "Golden Bomber". There are no subtitles. The title of the song is "Drunk and Mojito". I ordered "Mojito" which I had never drank on a date with her, but sang that it had a mint taste that I disliked. Please ask if you like. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4m4ZYCqZ5Vpp68

@@crabuki1273 and he is right. John Winston Ono Lennon would absolutely love this band. And for much more than just obvious reasons. And l will tell you three more that l am sure as hell would agree: Jimi Hendrix, Lemmy and Sid Vicious. Sure it is only an opinion but l completely stand by it.

Fun fact the name Band Aid actually comes from the British army where members of the Band of the Regiment were also the medics when it came to battle. The development of small wound dressings that stuck to the skin... band aids... were literally aids/assistants for the members of the Band to perform their battle duties.

Actually a wonderful and astonishing instrumental. They have four (Onset, Go nuts, Don´t Be Long and Without Holding Back) but there aren´t good recordings except this one (it´s a mistery for me why they use these songs in live performances but no in their CDs).

I resonate with the band! Absolutely. Rock centered with a wonderful disregard for genre boundaries. It would be great if they could do a King Crimson inspired song or even album. They have the technical skills and a wonderful song writer in Kanami. Good English translations of the lyrics would help.

A certain MR EDDIE VAN HALEN would be impressed with KANAMI'S tapping technique. Originally, Kanami played Addictone guitars but once she was noticed, she’s been PRS all the way! Kanami- PRS / Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier + 8 or 9 different pedals Miku- Zemaitis Custom / EVH 5150 (EDDIE VAN HALEN) stack + various pedals MISA- Black Cloud custom 5 string bass / Orange stack Akane- Drum Kit: Tama Star Bubinga, Snare Drum: Ludwig, Cymbals: Zildjian (left to right) Oh, by the way- JIMMY PAGE OF (LED ZEPPELIN) loves BAND-MAID, enough said....

Too much made of these pigeon hole (pun intended.) categories of popular modern music. This pigeon holing and corporate control of the entire creative process have put rock n roll in the hospital and on the critical list. Band-Maid is a hard rock band but that completely misses the point. For many of us music can be divided into only four categories and this applies to all music. Music l prefer and music l don't and music universally considered good and music universally considered bad or less than. Band-Maid is NOT reviving rock music. They are redefining it. Look at it like this: this redefining of modern hard rock music is a very progressive thing. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

@@ShikataGaNai100 When you are right you are right. Was just watching the Airplane at Wally Heider in 1970. About 30 minutes of color footage with tolerable audio and l couldn't help but marvel that this is the way it is supposed to be. You record some music. People hear that music and it is accepted or rejected on that basis. Now l am not so naive as to think it could ever be that way. Just that it should be that way. I think you understand what l'm trying to say. Regards.

Friendly feedback: great band. Would like to see a larger band video frame and smaller everything else. I like the printed comments rather than interruptions to the music (inspired idea), but would like to see more of them highlighting different aspects of the music. If all I wanted to do was see the band play-- lots of videos on KZbin. Came here for the reaction. Not many reactions in this. ; )
