Not a fan of competitions like this. Plus, you chose songs that are incredibly different stylistically. I'm really not a fan of putting 2 great bands against each other in some sort of competition. There'll not be a "one is better than the other", cause it's always a matter of personal taste. And, it might also trigger those toxic "fans" who like to throw s*it at each other. I'd say it's not Band-Maid against The Warning, but Band-Maid AND The Warning.

@@robertor4531 Before they met each other, Pau had said that she loved how Akane played the drums in "chose me" and that she loved j-rock, and for many years they appeared on her play list (she showed her playlists to the fans since years ago). As for the band-maid, it is difficult to know what they think, because they don't have much interaction in networks, but Akane had been following them on networks for a long time, and the way she behaved when she met them didn't seem just because of "tatemae", Akane did seem genuinely excited. Now I can't say that they have posters in their bedroom, but it seems that there is some admiration to each other, or at least some respect

Luckily there is no real competition. You are comparing apples and oranges. You are comparing a 5 piece band to a 3 piece band. They have completely different styles, but MANY mutual fans! Having grown up in the Rock era of the 70s and 80s, I love both bands, because they are bringing GREAT rock back to the forefront. I am a HUGE fan of The Warning and I LOVE Band-Maid, and the bands are also mutual fans of each other! I am also lucky that in less than 2 weeks I will be seeing and meeting The Warning LIVE, then 2 days later in the same venue, I will be seeing Band-Maid! What a week that will be!!! First The Warning with their amazing, hard but incredibly catchy rock style. Then Band-Maid that blow you away with their incredible musicianship. Both are so endearing to their fans as well! Both Winners in my book!

I look at it this way. Both songs are are great. Choke is the kind of song I'd play while driving on the Autobahn. Lots of high speed thrills in a (sort of) straight line . Unleash is the kind of song I'd play while driving on the Nürburgring. Lots of change of pace and more twists and turns. I'm a Prog Rock person at heart so I'm biased to music that challenges my inner metronome.

@@kohlmcmullen Based on a few recent songs, yes. But Band-Maid has many mid-tempo songs in different styles. They're one of those who can't be judged based on just a handful of songs. You have to listen to at least 10 to make any sort of judgement. Every fans have their own different favourites. While Band-Maid sounds always had touch or prog element, they are unbelievably versatile and do whatever they want and challenge us fans. If you have an eclectic taste in music, you'll end up loving them.

Comparisons of any kind, beit between songs, band members or music groups, is a fruitless endeavor... but maybe a fun thing to attempt. If John wants to compare Choke with some Band-Maid song, imo, "I Can't Live Without You" would be a better choice. Choke is all about Dani's powerful vocals (and TW's songwriting, and Pau's drumming). ICLWY is also about vocals -- Saiki's incredible vocals (and the writing and playing from all the members). There's probably better songs one could use to compare between these two supergroups, but like I said, it's really a fruitless endeavor because at their high level of accomplishment, it just doesn't f'n matter! To me it's a choice between technical proficiency with Band-Maid and more of a simpler melodic/hook emphasis with The Warning, so it depends on your taste. For me I have never really cared about technical playing, I could never get into bands like Dragonforce or Dream Theatre for this reason. I am more of a David Gilmore fan, than a Steve Vai one, just my personal leaning, so The Warning is more in my wheel house. I envy those who can get into both, as it opens up a larger variety of music, but alas not for me. Also I have been following The Warning since they were really young and saw them grow up, participated in fundraising events to help them finance their albums/tours when they were independent, plus the fact that they are fluent in English and have lots of behind the scenes, Q&A, vlogs, etc. videos on their channel, I feel a lot more involved than I could with the Japanese bands, so there's that too.

It's just that this particular song is fast-paced and more technical. Band-Maid has many slower, melodic, emotional songs, with touch of jazz, grunge, prog, etc. Note choice is unusual and weird more often than not but fans love them for it. But I understand what you're saying. The guitarist's favorite player is actually Santana believe it or not.

Music is always a subjective thing for all. One vs the other doesn't seem like a good thing. To clarify, I listen to everything from Allison Krause to Rob Zombie. Jazz, Funk, prog rock to prog bluegrass but I appreciate good musicians, good lyrics and the feel from all of them. To many great artists to just pick one out of two.

I’m a long time musician and music fan in general. Thanks for making the effort in this video. Reviewing art is challenging enough, but an artistic competition is setting up for failure. Only way I could see it work is if you picked two songs with similar arrangements and musical missions. For what it’s worth, I’m a huge Band-Maid fan and even I think “Choke” is a phenomenal song and performance. Especially vocally. Unleash!!!!! isn’t in my top twenty Band-Maid songs. Competition for “Choke” would have to be something like “Moratorium” or “Manners,” in my opinion. Those are approaching top ten Band-Maid offerings.

edited: to remove genre difference from the comparison, you could possibly choose a truly hard rock song by band-maid (as opposed to the extremely j-anime-rock song style that was in this comparison) and maybe a more up-beat song like Evolve or Disciple by the warning... because that would put them into similar musical territory, at least. The Warning rarely does guitar solos because they care about the song first.

the problem you will always find with his format is what two songs you are comparing as both these bands have a range of songs in the case of band maid across genres, so comparing one particular song against another particular bands song is like comparing apples to oranges every time, and means very little, if you were to ask both bands fans to pick what they consider is their bands best ballad or heaviest song or jazziest song whatever you would get maybe a better comparison

You are comparing here metal vs. hard rock & 2 very different songs. "Animosity" in its animated video would have been more comparable to Unleash in my opinion. Band-Maid doesn't follow any particular genre. Some are more pop-punk, some classic blues rock, pop-funk-jazz whatever fusion, rock ballad, pop-jazz fusion they fuse genres so seemlessly that it takes many listens to pick all the elements. Their sound is so layered and colourful like impressionist art, but I think they've overdone it with this song though.

Both are great at what the do. I can almost predict the chord progressions of The Warning, which make it less interesting for me and over relient on the catchy chorus. Not always, obviously, but being the lead singer and the guitarist in a three person band limits the scope of the guitar work unless you are Hendrix. Other's have a rhythm guitarist, hence no guitar solo from The Warning. The real difference is 3 v 5 members in a band.

Endless energy, Band-Maid's maybe a little more frenetic, The Warning's a little more enveloping. Although Band maid are fantastic , technically it's too manic and chaotic for me , where as the Warning are more traditional rock music , together with better lyrics and composition but it's all about personal preference .

@@anthonyfisher1670 Same goes with me. I haven't listened to enough The Warnings yet. I'll try listen to their other songs, can you recommend me some? Regarding Band-Maid, there are actually many slower songs- Yolo, Awkward, Matchless Gum, Puzzle, Manners, Moratorium, Wonderland, Mirage, About Us...live version if you can find them. They sound entirely different and in ballads like Anemone and Daydreaming the guitar solos sound more like stevie ray vaughan. Check out a few of those if you are interested.

I recognize that there's more raw instrumental talent in Band-Maids, especially Akane, who may be the best drummer in rock right now (technique-wise) but The Warning are far far better at songwriting. The Warning is humble, Band-Maids is show-offy. As for Pau's drumming for TW, she's like Ringo in the sense that while there are more technically adept drummers out there, her drum parts are perfect for each song. As for TW's songwriting, I find myself humming their melodies in the shower. I can't even remember a Band-Maid melody.

Band-Maid is good, but The Warning is damned amazing. Unlike j-rock groups, who typically are proudly showing off their typically AMAZING chops and musical proficiency, The Warning shows self restraint in their performance and composing skills because the song comes first, rather than ego building chops demonstrations. But, that being said, real The Warning fans know that they have serious chops also... and admire the self restraint to put the song first, while band-maid fans know they have serious chops, and love the chops and cleverness in how they showcase them WHILE focusing on the song... so both bands are great, but WILDLY DIFFERENT.

Ugh. You have Band-Maid confused with other Japanese bands: for Band-Maid the song always comes first - they are not a show-off look-at-me band in any manner. Instrumental solos in Band-Maid are written for and serve the song.

I can't blame you for thinking that Band-Maid showing off their techy side, based on this song. But they are more known for their tasty arrangement, great composition with quirks, genuine people with no ego, complimenting each other rather than trying to stand out. They let themselves loose in some songs, but only when the song needs it. They are not one of those bands where you listen to one song and judge their style, you have to listen to at least 10 songs to figure out about them. Band-Maid is just so unbelievably diverse, but not all their mid-tempo gems are available on KZbin which is a bit unfair. That's why I don't think this style of reaction will work.

I'm not crazy about pitting songs against each other in a popularity contest. I prefer The Warning because they are more musical. Band-Maid seems to depend on showy displays of manic technicality, which is fine if that's what you like. I'm also not crazy about their vocals and lyrics, which I believe might be due to a language barrier. I judge reactors by how they like The Warning, so you passed the audition. 😉👍

Claims not to want a popularity contest... makes ignorant comment about another band. Personally I love both bands' music, they also seem to be nice people, and I was excited about the idea of some joint shows when they met at Aftershock. But everywhere I encounter The Warning fans, they seem to be making toxic and false statements about other bands, whether its labelling Liliac "a cover band", trying to make out that Band-Maid's virtuosity is a weakness, or just being obnoxious about Japanese bands more broadly. Wave Potter made a great video: "How You Can Ruin Your Favorite Bands". That's what the Warning Army are doing. It's shame, because the band deserves much better.

Everyone who has a favorite band is gonna say the best things about them and make others seem less to them. The Warning are great, I don't know a lot of their music but from what I heard they are very talented and have a good musical direction. My favorite band is Band-Maid for obvious reasons but to me they are not the best, KGLW is the best, but they are my favorite because of their originality, their music and their stage performance (and off stage, they are truly f'n funny ass people) I'm just glad that finally there are young new bands making ACTUAL music these days.

When you listen to a TW song, you quickly identify the essence of their music, when you listen to Bandmaid it sounds very generic like other oriental bands. Brother, I don't think you know what generic means. Band-maid is definitely not generic. I love both bands. But the Warning follows the more generic standard of a rock song compared to Band-maid.

What I see is a group of people discussing and supporting their favorite band while denigrating the other one they know superficially. For the guys who say that there is no other j-rock band that sounds like BM, well, the same can be said for TW, name another band from latin america (or even american) that sounds like TW, see? it's the same thing, and the modern female bands that are kinda similar, arose after TW and the same with BM, remember that both bands were born in the same year (2013), so most of the modern similar bands to them were born after. Both bands are recognized for mixing their different musical references, the difference is that TW has a more recognizable sound for westerners while BM has a more Japanese style, so if you accuse TW for being generic you would also have to do it with BM and vice versa. But even both bands are inspired by the culture of the country of the other, kanami likes Santana and in memorable at the beginning a track of a song in Spanish is heard, while the warning incorporates the word korusu to the chorus of QOTMS, and they ventured with an anime-style video where they play surrounded by kaijus, and remember, both bands listen to each other's music. So both are equally original or equally generic, depending on how you see it.

@@Guwig Great comment. Band-Maid definitely has several commercial radio friendly tracks, but always with some unusual note choices, timing that make them Band-Maid. I still haven't seen another Japanese bands that sound like them though... And you are right. Even though The Warning sounds a bit mainstreamy to my ear, it's probably because I don't know much about the band and Mexican music in general to begin with. I've listened to and still love so many artists and bands across the world, and I call my playlist "my schizophrenic playlist", yet Band-Maid has one of the weirdest, but in a different way from sonic youth, ween or sugarcubes.

@@lurkmerchant "Several commercial songs but with an unusual choice note", perfectly describes the warning too, Let's see, according to the warning, this is one of the most commercial song, and maybe at first glance it looks like a 2000's song, but there are many unusual decisions, just listen to the start, do not solve on a regular way, the progressions, the changes of rhythm, the way of building, there are many elements that make it sound not exactly as a typical 2000's song, I mean it has so many subtle things in there that if you look at the comments on the video of the song you will see that nobody agrees on the genre of the song (weird for a song that's supposedly generic). But it always seems that with the warning there is a great prejudice towards them, it's like in the West they are more willing to give a vote of confidence to a Japanese band than to a Western one. But also one of the things that differentiates them is that the warning is more minimalist and band maid has more moments of "musical virtuosity", and that also gives the illusion that what the warning does is not a big deal.

@@Guwig That's great to know. I'm getting curious to listen to songs other songs by The Warning now. It's like Band-Maid's Start Over that's considered by many to be their generic pop song, actually is pop-jazz fusion but the layers behind the melody were a bit proggy at least in my ear, and the sound gets noticeably more dissonant towards the end. It doesn't sound like any other pop songs I listened to in the past. I kind of understand now why 2 bands have many mutual fans. Many Band-Maid fans are actually musicians themselves so they can pick up those subtle things that regular fans miss. I'm sure they pick up what you mentioned about The Warning 's music. You can listen to Manners, Freedom, Matchless Gum, Anemone, Wonderland. Daydreaming, etc, which is a lot slower, or their acoustic concert videoclips. Band-Maid wasn't always popular. It's been 10 years since they were formed in 2013 after all. Like I said in my reply to your other comment, I'm into all sort of music, Western, Asian, Middle-eastern, Celtic, African, Latin, whatever....as long as the music is good and interesting. At this moment there is increasing number of reactors reacting to Japanese music for sure, because it's something new to their ears. But Japanese bands still are far behind K-pop in the popularity contest. I also think The Warning is getting exposed more and more now and that shows the prejudice you talk about is gradually dissipating.

Amo a Band Maid pero tampoco es tan así. En Japón sobran los músicos con una técnica depurada y genial así que eso de que nadie toca como ellas es más gesto de fan. Para mi ambas bandas se complementan pues así como Band Maid es muy técnico gracias a su trío mounstruoso (Akane, Misa y Kanami), The Warning es muy divertido y poderoso de ver en vivo gracias al carisma y a la potencia de Daniela y Paulina. Lo que si no me gusta para nada de Band Maid (Y de mucho del JRock en general) es su estilo de crear personajes y por eso hacen a Misa borracha, a Kanami lesbiana o a la vocalista como una princesa mientras Miku finge demencia. Esto es muuuuuuy común en el JRock pero luego de la primera impresión divertida llega a cansarte. Por otro lado las Villarreal son bastante más naturales y abiertas como generalmente somos las personas en Latinoamérica.

yes i found a lot of them interesting, such as the Band M being to technical and showing off there skills, doesn't it remind you of the band m fans toward LoveB, and how fast they counter. and how about the warning put the song first, and band m is about the solos. i am not taking a shot at either band or fan base, i guess it's a matter of taste and perspective.

@jerryajc oh I agree, they have followed the path of most of the other Japanese female bands, mix a bunch of genre's together, throw it at the wall and see what sticks. Unfortunately, for me at least, it dilutes everything they do. I know some people like the variety but it's not for me, if I'm going to listen to Metal then I want Metal, not some homogenized mash-up.

Una comparacion un poco sin sentido ya que NO son el mismo Rock. Bandmaid solo es mejor que The Warning en estructuración de sus canciones sin contar que son "5" son una full band donde la vocalista no hace mas que cantar... por otro lado un POWER TRIO donde las 3 hacen mas que solo tocar el instrumento ...y que a nivel lirico y de performance estan por encima de BM..opinion mia. The anime sound isn't for me but i can still appreciate what BM does. However TW just has a sound that resonates with you personally and has a sound fuller than the number of members there are. Imo. But i can get why people prefer BM.

People like me are more into Band-Maid because I'm an easily bored person and Band-Maid live is like a non-stop party with all the different coloured music. And after the live there are so many songs left that I wish they had played. Plus the singer's voice is more powerful, full, raw and rock live and turn my least favourite song (something like this) into another fav. I don't like the studio sound of Band-Maid I have to admit. It sounds somewhat sterile and poppier. That's why most maid fans say that you have to experience them live. I still haven't listened to the Warning enough, but so far their sound is a bit too depressive and I have to be in the right mood. But I'll open mind to listen to them more.
