*RE-UPLOAD* Hey guys unfortunately, KZbin removed the original video due to copyright despite my best efforts at editing. This re-upload is heavily edited to try to avoid this problem occurring again, If it was my choice the video would be longer and look quite different. So I am sorry for this! The original 22 minute version is still up on my Patreon. I also wanted to thank you all, for your incredible feedback through this series. I have plans to react to the Documentary, Ron Livingstons Diary, The Pacific and much more! Next video is Hacksaw Ridge, so stay tuned! x

So glad to hear this, you will certainly enjoy all of these. (“Hacksaw Ridge” is amazing, & I must suggest another one that is equal to it. It’s a true story of an Army Air Corps veteran, Louie Zamporini who was taken prisoner by the Japanese. Absolutely beautiful & unbelievable account of events in 1945. Hope you consider it, you won’t be disappointed.)

I am so glad to hear that you plan to react to the documentaries! I assume the first one you mentioned is the one titled "We Stand Alone Together"? And I am really excited about your planned reaction to Ron Livingston's video diary! I keep suggesting to other reactors in my comments about this one but I think you are the first one to include it as one of your reactions! I know they will be a great companion to this series, especially if you're like me and have grown an attachment to the men of Easy Company. We can't get enough of the men, both actors and the real soldiers. Cheers!

Like every episode of Band of Brothers, there are fictional elements, omissions, and embellishments in episode 10 but I will only highlight a few: 1) Contrary to what is shown in Band of Brothers, Berchtesgaden was captured in the afternoon of May 4, 1945 by the 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division with the French 2nd Armored Division arriving later that afternoon and the 101st arriving in the morning of May 5. 2) Members of the 7th Infantry Regiment and the French 2nd Armored Division claim to have reached the Eagle's Nest hours before members of the 101st, and many historians accept these claims (e.g., National WW2 Museum). 3) There is no evidence that members of Easy Company killed an unnamed commandant of unnamed concentration camp. What is shown in Band of Brothers is strikingly similar to the killing of Franz Ziereis who had been commandant of Mauthausen. Like the commandant in Band of Brothers, Franz Ziereis was hiding out in a mountain cabin when U.S. soldiers, who had been given a tip, went to the cabin to arrest him. Franz Ziereis was shot three times trying to escape.

Webster became interested in sharks. The book he wrote about sharks was part of the the research for a novel by Peter Benchley. That book "Jaws" was made into a movie by Steven Spielberg. The movie was Spielberg's first really big success, leading eventually to Spielberg producing "Band of Brothers", featuring among others that same David Kenyon Webster whose non-fiction work about sharks made some small contribution to Spielberg's own success.

This is always an emotional episode, even after watching it many times. These men are all gone now. While we mourn their passing, we should also be grateful that these men lived.

You asked about Sergeant Chuck Grant. "He recovered slowly, although he had some difficulty speaking and was partially paralyzed in his left arm." He was medically discharged with full disability. Lived in San Francisco, running a small cigar store. Regularly attended E Company reunions and active in 101st Association as the 506th representative on the Board of the Association. He served in that capacity with great pride. Died in 1984. (Information from page 296, "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose.)

As for Floyd Craver the replacement from Item Company, he received a dishonourable discharge and a life sentence for two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder plus one count of desertion. There were allegations that he had attempted to SA a young Austrian woman, but they were never brought to light during his trial. He died in July of '87, ironically as a result of a head on collision with a truck riding on his motorcycle, whilst under the influence of alcohol.

@@GreyDoofus88 I've thought about how it would have been nice, when they found him, if they'd just shot him and said he was resisting. Wasn't it only about 6 years that he served, for killing two Germans, a British officer and leaving Grant permanently disabled- plus the possibility of incident with the Austrian woman, and who knows what else. As you point out, it seems that he wasn't the type of person to learn from his mistakes and continued on the same path to his end. I imagine he left a trail of problems for people throughout his whole life.

Easy Company is the most ironic name in military history. From D-DAY all the way to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, there was nothing Easy about it. I never want things I love to end, but you want the pain to end for these Men, and the peace to begin. The German Field Marshall's speech is actually what ties the entire concept of of the series together unexpectedly. I implore you to see "We Stand Alone Together" and Ron Livingston's (Nixon) Bootcamp Diary. It makes you appreciate the series even more unbelievably. "Were you a hero in the War Grandpa? Grandpa says no, but I served in a company of heroes" Near tears every time. Thank you for taking this journey. Currahee!

Fun fact...just about every Regiment in the US Army had an "Easy" company, because "easy" was just the military phonetic for the letter E and the standard structure of a US Army Regiment in WW2 was 9 companies that were lettered from A or Able thru I or India. So all of those regiments had an B or Baker Company, they all had D or Dog Company, and they all had an E or Easy Company...and so forth. Sorry if you already knew all that. 👍

They did not have support groups for returning military members. Most veterans joined service clubs like the Disable American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Vets (Aman Vets). When they got together, they would talk about their war experiences. It was a release to people who understood what they went through. Most veterans did not talk to anybody else about their experiences. even to family members. Webster wrote a book about his experiences. It was part of the reason the David Ambrose decided to write the book "Band of Brothers".

Hitler's Eagle's Nest is still there to this very day. In fact, you can see it on Google Earth, if you zoom-in to the street level. From what I remember reading, the place was ransacked and at some point was burned (Don't quote me on the burning part, though). It has been rebuilt and is now a tourist destination, in Austria. One thing that amazes me about the acting in this movie, is the spot-on American accents that they are portraying. For instance, the actors who played T5 Joe Liebgott (Ross McCall) and Lt. Harry Welsh (Rick Warden) both have distinct British accents. However, I kept listening to them speak their lines, to see if I could detect their native accents, but I could not. I've always heard that a non-descript American accent is much easier to develop by Brits, but an authentic British accent is much harder for Americans.

That's probably how it started out, but it's now a general acknowledgement for all military veterans, not just WWI vets. But especially for those who served during an armed conflict. Case in point was my father, who was a Marine during the Nicaragua rebellions, and was a proud member of the local VFW(Veterans Of Foreign Wars).

Yep-was known as Armistice Day until 1954 when Congress passed a bill changing the name to Veterans Day. Outside of the US, November 11th is still known as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day (depending on the country).

Something that comes up in the last episode that is not fully explained is the Adjusted Service Rating Score...which is what the "points" they keep referring to is about. The Army needed a system to prioritize the people that were deployed overseas, and decide in what order folks would get to go home, since not everyone could go home at the same time. The system heavily prioritized people with children under the age of 18 to get them home as soon as possible, and focused on medals awarded and time in service overseas as other criteria.👍

Great, so glad you are doing Hacksaw Ridge next. I am assuming you know something about the central theme of the movie. Since the movie opens with what it's about, I don't think what I'm about to say is a spoiler. The Pacific War was more brutal than the war in Europe even though there were more American deaths in Europe even though we started fighting the Japanese starting with Pearl Habor on Dec. 7 and ending with the A bombs in August 1945. Our fighting in Europe didn't start until 1943 and ended in May 1945. BAND OF BROTHERS takes one through the Frence / Germany side of the war but let's not forget the very hard fought Italian campaign. Back to the Pacific. The Japanese like all the major powers including Germany signed the Geneva Convention of 1899 and 1929 plus the Convention at the Hague in 1907 which established the rules of war. The purpose of these rules was to reduce suffering as much as possible. Violations of these rules could lead to war crime charges. Rules; 1. You cannot dress in the uniform of your enemy. To so could create friendly fire situations. 2. All medical personnel were considered non-combatants. This includes doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, medics, and stretcher bearers. If any medical personnel are engaged in combat, then they are fair game. 3. You cannot kill the wounded unless they are engaged in battle. 4. You can't use a white flag to gain an advantage to attack your enemy. 5. Poisoning food or water is strictly prohibited. 6. Civilian populations are considered non-combatants and cannot be used as shields or even as forced labor. The Germans more or less adhered to these rules on the Western front. They completely ignored them when fighting the Soviet Union. All sides violated these rules from time to time but only the Japanese and the Germans on their Eastern Front violated them as a matter of policy. The War in the Pacific became a no hold bar slug fest. There were other factors that made fighting the Japanese such a brutal affair. The Japanese, like the Germans, believed that they were a superior race and all other races were beneath them and did not command any respect as human beings. The Japanese soldier ascribed to the code of Bushido, the code of the warrior. The greatest shame a soldier could bring on his family was to surrender. Any soldier that surrendered was not deserving of decent treatment. The Japanese were taught from childhood that their lives belonged to the Emperor, who was also considered a god. They taught their people that to die for the Emperor was the greatest joy. Keep these things in mind as you watch HACKSAW RIDGE. Afterwards, consider watch the series THE PACIFIC. followed by MASTERS OF THE AIR. Looking forward to your reaction to HACKSAW RIDGE. It truly is a great movie.

His boat was recovered a few miles offshore by some fisherman, though. So this couldn’t have happened. It’s likely he fell overboard and drowned since his wife had said that he didn’t use a life jacket whenever he used the boat.

"Watch and react"? To react is instinctual, survival, not something you "do", it just happens because your brain wants to live rather than not. Example: Cat appears in front of you. You react to it. If you don't and it's a wild animal you'll die because the animal also wants to survive, maybe eat you. It's strange that people think "to react" is something you "do", that's like saying hearing is something "you do" or simply breathing.

"You may keep your sidearm, colonel" "WHY!?" -- Because Winters understands the assignment. After WWI, the allies treated the defeated Germans with such distain and humiliated them, that resentment in Germany gave rise to Hitler. Winters realizes this, and is making the effort to correct that mistake by showing the German officers respect and military courtesy (whether they deserve it or not). Seems like the German colonel was not expecting this, as you can see he's almost taken aback by the gesture...
