Sobel was a mean vindictive, spiteful, cruel, petty, and was hated by his company. But for basic training, he pushed his men past their limits and made them better soldiers. Almost all of them admitted after the fact that his training help them dramatically in the field. Their hatred of him, made them form an extremely tight and close bond. His physical and endurance training absolutely helped them later. Now regardless of his character issues, he was absolutely terrible in the field. Wasn't strategic, had no ability to see battle plans in his mind, couldn't follow a map. And had no feelings for the lives of those he was leading. Absolutely not the person you want in charge. When you see the Sergeants in mass declare that they want to leave their position, that should tell you everything. That behavior in a combat zone was punished by firing squad.

Sink's handling of the matter was perfect. The correct message was sent to the NCOs, while the issue they raised was addressed.

For someone who didnt served or not familiar with the structure of the army a seargant or NCO in general means absolutely nothing. I don't think he understood that those guys were the backbones of the company. I'm not throwing shades at him for it or you for mentioning it but there is a lot of stuff like that in this show that only people with some knowledge will pick up. That is one of the reason why is this show is so highly regarded among people who served.

Interesting fact about Winters that gives a big idea as to why he was such a good leader...he enlisted in August of 1941 and completed training as an enlisted man, then he remained at the camp where he trained to help train other men after him. He was selected for Officer Candidate School in April 1942, and after he finished that training and became an officer in July 1942 he volunteered for the Airborne...so when we see him as a Platoon Leader in Easy, that is his third set of training that Winters is undergoing. Also...fun fact...just about every Regiment in the US Army had an "Easy" company, because "easy" was just the military phonetic for the letter E and the standard structure of a US Army Regiment in WW2 was 9 companies that were lettered from A or Able thru I or Item. So all of those regiments had an B or Baker Company, they all had D or Dog Company, and they all had an E or Easy Company...and so forth. At 10:25 you talk about an actor on screen being somebody that you also saw in Saving Private Ryan, but I believe you are mistaken. At that time stamp, the actor on screen is Kirk Acevedo, who plays Joe Toye in this series, but I think you mistook him for Adam Goldberg, who played Private Mellish in Saving Private Ryan. Apologies if I am mistaken about you being mistaken. LOL Paratroopers was an all volunteer unit, at least they were before D-Day. In order to even try to become a Paratrooper, a soldier had to have volunteered to join the Army and then volunteered again to become a Paratrooper...that is why men were allowed to give up on the Paratrooper training if they decided they no longer wanted to be a paratrooper...which we see when that man chose not to change into his PT gear. There may have been men who were trained as replacements for the Paratroopers later in the war who volunteered to be Paratroopers, but who were actually drafted into the Army...but when we see Easy Company in training in the show none of the men were draftees.

The actor playing Joe Toye is Kirk Acevedo. You’re confusing him with Adam Goldberg, who was in Saving Private Ryan and played Chandler’s crazy roommate Eddie on Friends.

After you finish the 10 episodes, there are 2 more fascinating pieces to watch. The documentary titled “We Stand Alone Together” is about the real men, and the history of the Airborne. Ron Livingston (Lewis Nixon) did a ‘ video diary’ about the 2 week boot-camp style training the cast went thru before filming. Both will enrich the appreciation of the series. BTW, Tom Hanks co-authored the script for Episode 1, directed Episode 5 and has a couple of super-quick cameos in the series.

The cast of this was absolutely STACKED. When this came out, it was the most expensive television production ever, with a total budget of $120 million. "Currahee" is a Native American word that means, "stands alone". I believe it's Cherokee.

In my opinion, they do a good job of making Sobel someone that pushes them hard, for a good reason, which yields to good performance out of his men, but also not being a good leader where it ultimately counts: on the battlefield.

Anyone can push a division hard, but it's rare that you can do that and get their respect in the process -- if they respected him they may not have pushed to leave Easy altogether

Sobel's transfer to Chilton Foliat was a clever solution to several problems. Colonel Sink truly needed a competent trainer and he respected the noncoms. He was able to sideline the court martial and fix the leadership issues presented by Sobel All members of the airborne were volunteers

Yes, these were the real men of "Easy' company. Wherever a name is used, those were actual men of Easy company. The interviews at the beginning were from the surviving members of the company who were still living at the time of the miniseries. Their identities will be revealed at the end of the episode 10. Just so there are no spoilers as to who lived and who died.

If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant. The old man on the bike is still of one my favorite scenes "Deary me..." Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality. CURRAHEE!♠

Sobel was an adequate training officer, but, he was completely tactically inept. If Col. Sink had left him in command of Easy, many of the guys would have died needlessly.

I served 4 years in the US Air Force and was fortunate not to have deployed (stationed at a joint command with the 566 IS at Buckley, AFB). Most of my friends were 18 or 19 when I graduated basic training. We were all very close but so young. Some of my friends went overseas and did not return home. I can't imagine how terrified these brave young men were back then. - Also, I had flight commanders like Sobul - they were awful but we had great Senior NCOs on our side to safeguard the enlisted ranks.

If you don't know by now, there is another mini series by Hanks and Spielberg called The Pacific. It's not quite as good as this but definitely more brutal. Winters is a big star too. He was the star of Homeland and Billions. he is actually English and has a fairly thick accent.

Without any doubt one of the greatest TV series ever. There is no "I wonder if I will like it or not" with this series. Anyone who has ever watched it understands it is a masterpiece. But some are unable to watch all of it. It gets pretty intense. This is war that is shown in this series, and specifically WW2 (and that distinction is important for a later episode). Yes, the 101st Airborne (and the 82nd and the British Airborne) were heavily involved in D-Day, just not on the beaches. These guys were considered the elite of the US Army at the time. Of course they were going to be involved in the biggest amphibious exercise in the history of warfare.

For the most part the stories you're going to see are true. Some cinema liberties were made. But even stuff that feels like writing, isn't. For instance, Guanere getting the wrong jacket and learning of his brother's death, that happened. As for Sobel. He definitely knew how to practical train men, but he was lost in the combat field. The incident with the NCOs (aka corporal, sergeant) writing out their resignations. That happened. Like I said, most events happened, with some changes. Get ready. This show is about to heat up. Remember how intense Saving Private Ryan could be? This will be every bit of that.

So first off, this show is mostly based on the recollections and books that some of the veterans wrote after the war, so while it is generally quite accurate, there are some slight errors every now and then, or artistic license. There is -one- bigger mistake at the end of Ep3. David Schwimmer was the biggest name on the cast when the show as filmed, as it happened during the height of Friends' popularity, but a lot of new or lesser known actors would emerge from this series. Michael Fassbender (his first role ever), Simon Pegg, Michael Cudlitz among others, and more to come later on. The men all hated Sobel because he was unnecessarily harsh with them, always finding excuses to punish them, but they all credited their survival to him and his rigorous physical training, even if he was a very poor leader in the field. The main cast went through a week-long boot camp prior to filming, to really get them into the roles they were portraying, and that went a long way to give this show a lot of its authentic feel. Some of the cast appear older, but in reality, most of these guys were extremely young, 18 & 19yo boys going to war, some of them never even having seen a plane until now, and now they had to jump off of one. Even the officers, men like Winters (26), Nixon (25), Meehan & Compton (both 22) were not that old at all on D-Day. Ranney and Harris were the two punished by Col Sink because he rightfully figured out they were the ones behind the mutiny, being at the time the seniors among the Sergeants. Ranney was actually transferred to Item Company but managed to rejoin Easy about a week before D-Day. Harris, meanwhile (never shown again in the show, so not a spoiler), became a Pathfinder and was killed in the battle of Carentan. Thankfully, Sink also understood that if so many men bucked at serving under Sobel, there might be some kernel of truth in there somewhere. And yes, they really would have shot them, but the loss of so many NCOs would have dealt a terrible blow to the strength of the regiment. That $10,000 that Joe Toye dreams about is worth about $177,000 today.

The 101st Airborne and the 82nd Airborne, along with a glider regimen all parachuted into Normandy in the wee hours of the morning of June 6th hours before the actual landings on the beaches!! Since you've seen saving Private Ryan if you remember when Ryan identifies himself, he says he's with 1st of the 506th, which means first battalion of the 506 PIR, parachute infantry regimen!! The EASY company that we follow in this show is in SECOND battalion 506th regimen!! So these guys and Private Ryan were basically from the same regimen, even though Private Ryan was a fictitious character!!!
