I got to meet the real Malarkey back in 2009. He is AS funny as you would think he would be. He just had a way of captivating a crowd with his jokes and stories. The actor who portrayed him did an excellent job of highlighting SGT Malarkey. The actual Malarkey spoke highly of the actor, but he quipped that he could have done a better job 😂. I think Malarkey passed away like 6 years ago. Dude lived an amazing life.

Also had the pleasure of meeting him when i was still very young around 2005 i believe. My dad told me to go ask him if he ever found his Luger. When i asked him he started laughing and said "I got plenty of them". As young as i was i will always remember that

David Webster was the guy who gave a chocolate bar to that little Dutch boy in episode 4. He actually couldn't have snuck back because by the time he was healed enough, the unit was surrounded ny the Germans in Bastogne. The writers wanted to show how some men were not accepted back immediately, but he actually was. Later, he wrote a book "Parachute Infantry". His account is interesting, and he made no bones about the fact that he wasn't much for volunteering. Winters was such a great leader, and it takes a lot of courage to disobey an order. Lt. Jones was played by Colin Hanks, Tom Hanks son.

Fun Fact: the Thompson submachine gun Colin Hanks used was the same prop gun his father used in Saving Private Ryan. The prop gun was sold at an auction in the UK and went for about as much as a genuine, fully functional Thompson SMG.

Webster was wounded in the 'Crossroads' episode(5) and thus missed Bastogne. One thing they didn't really show was that when he asked where all the guys were, only to be told that many of them were gone or wounded, that he had effectively been told that many of his friends had been killed.

Keep in mind that Winters was taking a huge risk to himself on behalf of protecting the men on the second patrol. By directly disobeying an order, he could have faced a very serious court martial. Despite their relief at knowing they didn't have to go again, they also understood what Winters was risking for them. No wonder they all respected him so much.

10:50 Webster gets down on the ground immediately, Malarkey ducks slightly and Spiers just stands there nonchalantly like saying "Is that it?" I guess this episode felt shorter to you is because in a way it was more "hopeful" with the war coming to an end and Webster's narration about how they might actually survive this conflict.

You mentioned that Lt. Jones looked young. He was born in 1924. He graduated from the US Military Academy in June 1944. The episode takes place approximately Feb 45. Jones was 20 or 21 during the events of this episode. Lt Henry Jones was a real person. Yes he was an observer but did not actually participate in the patrol. He stayed behind under cover waiting to blow the whistle. Webster didn’t participate either. After the patrol Jones & Webster were in charge of the prisoners & the wounded Jackson.

I don't know for a fact that it was Winter's decision to not send the men on an second patrol (maybe someone will enlighten me), but it certainly seems befitting his leadership and integrity. In Meditations, a two-thousand-year-old manuscript on stoic philosophy, Marcus Aurelius recommends you meditate on your inevitable death every single day. Then, go out and live your best virtuous life. In war, you get tired very quickly of being terrified of dying. I mean, it is literally exhausting being that scared. You just have to accept the possibility of dying enough so you can go out and do your job. Dark humor also helps a lot.

But the real men were actually just glad to see that he never saw Bastogne and was still alive and well after all that time.

Webster ending lines are why this show is so important. There is a lot of neglect for soldiers after they are discharged. Many veterans struggle with the cost paid to win the war but are forgotten by civilians as they quickly embrace peace. It reminds me of the last of the light brigade by Rudyard Kipling. “The old troop-sergeant was spokesman, and begging’ your pardon, he said, ‘you wrote o’ the light brigade, sir. Here’s all that isn’t dead. An it’s all come true what you wrote, sir, regardin’ the mouth of hell; for we’re all of us nigh to the workhouse, an’ we thought we’d call and tell. No, thank you, we don’t want food, sir, but couldn’t you take an’ write a sort of to be continued and see next page o’ the fight? We think that someone has blundered, an’ couldn’t you tell ‘em how? You wrote we were heroes once, sir. Please, write we are starving now.”

The battle for Hagenau was an action during the last German offensive in western Europe. It was fought by a green US infantry Division that lost nearly 50% of its strength to halt elite German troops, including fallschirmjaeger (paratroopers) who fought to the end until they were forced back to the other side of the river and the US built up its forces to force a way through Haguenau towards the Rhine River. 506th Easy Company and other units were rushed in to reinforce the decimated US infantry. The US 1st Army broke through and crossed the Rhine at Remagen ten days after this episode was set and the US 3rd Army crossed the Rhine in the south and British 2nd Army crossed the Rhine to the north from Holland two weeks after that. Germany was now almost at the point of collapse. That gives the context to this episode.

I loved this series. It had a tremendous emotional impact, but this is what war is like, and it's something which we "should" watch and experience with them in order to honor them. It's by no means the saddest movie I've ever watched, however. That "honor" goes to Schindler's List. I went to see it in the theater with a bunch of women friends, and I started weeping within the first twenty minutes. My friends know how emotionally invested I can get, and one of them had brought a whole box of tissues and just handed it to me. In parts I was sobbing out loud, and I wasn't the only one in the theater. When it ended, nobody left. We all just sat there. People were either shell shocked and silent or sobbing. Yet, I can say it was one of the best movie watching experiences of my life, extremely important in shaping my own world view, as was Band of Brothers.

I hope you know that the ninth episode is basically fiction. The Luftwaffe work camp was real, there were prisoners building airplanes in that area, but the camp you see was a medical quarantine camp for typhus, and Easy Company didn't liberate it. Typhus was a treatable disease but at this point in the war there was no medicine left, not for prisoners, not for regular German citizens, not for the German military, not for anybody. They were absolutely nothing the Germans could do to keep them alive after the epidemic. And by the time a completely different unit arrived and liberated the camp (not the 101st), almost everyone had died from the disease. For the miniseries they made it look like it was some kind of extermination camp with a huge number of prisoners being deliberately killed, but there weren't any such camps in Germany and the 101st never saw any. It was just something Spielberg wanted to put in the miniseries for obvious personal reasons. The reality is, Germany was in total collapse, with zero infrastructure left. Huge numbers of innocents died from starvation and disease, including innocent Germans. If you really come out of this miniseries thinking Germany equals Mordor, you haven't been paying much attention.

I thought it was interesting in this episode how they are beginning to think they will survive the war and thus are being more careful...even to the point of disobeying an order. This makes an interesting comparison with Speirs' advice to Bly earlier in the series: _"The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you are already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."_ Interesting juxtaposition. But I'm glad Winters did what he did.

In fact, when i first watching show, i didn't remember Webster too, but i really surprised when i rewatching serial and saw Webster in first episode, and his wound in Holland, the 6 and 7 episodes forced me to forget all this, thats why people rewatch this serial i think

11:10 I get that they had been through hell, but I always hated how they treated Webster when he returned. Like he said, he was a veteran of D-Day and Market Garden and had been with the company since it formed. He didn't deserve to be treated like a rookie replacement.

I wish they hadn't fictionalized it with so many inaccuracies and misleading omissions. If Spielberg wanted to make a big deal out of the holocaust he should have made a miniseries about a Russian unit on the Eastern Front.

3:30 It sounds like what you are experiencing from watching Band of Brothers is the grieving process: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. I first watched this series many years ago. I've personally reached Acceptance. I do not revisit this series for entertainment. It's not that kind of show. But it is clearly a very high quality production, and it tells very impactful, important stories. It's a series that contributed to my own personal growth, because I gained a deeper understanding of humans and humanity, both the highs and the lows.

I follow others on their journey with this show to help them try to understand some things that may not make sense to them. I also enjoy watching the show again to help keep these people’s lives from fading away.

A good follow up to BAND OF BROTHERS is PACIFIC ; The War in the Pacific during World War Two was much, much more brutal.

One thing you begin to appreciate when you see how beaten down, and war-weary the US men are at this point in the war after about 8 months of combat. Makes you wonder how the Soviet and German armies actually functioned after 4 years of combat that was as brutal or worse than this on the Eastern Front. Also makes you think about the men on the frontlines of Ukraine in the current war that's been about 1 year now.

When i first watched it i was pretty unaffected, but i was also a teen who was battered with WW2 shooter games like COD and Medal of Honor. "Man this is some cool action" was all I thought. Rewatching as an adult it hit entirely different, understanding how damn traumatizing living through this was, for those who even lived.
