Webster got wounded during the Crossroads episode. He was the guy who gave the chocolate bar to the kid, who came up from the cellar. Webster was the one who yelled, "They got me! Can you believe I said that."

Nobody questions that Dike was a bad leader, but he was no coward. He volunteered. Dike was wounded in the shoulder during the attack on Foy, and was losing blood. That's why he was so disoriented. He was wounded on D-Day and got a silver star for saving three soldiers under fire in Holland

Cobb did end up killing the prisoner the patrol left on the river embankment. "Webster and another paratrooper each threw 2 grenades, none of which killed the German. Cobb later made one attempt with a grenade of his own, killing the wounded soldier." And at the end of the episode when you see him with the military police in the jeep, it's related to Cobb being court martialed. "Cobb actually got drunk after a "daytime scrounging mission" with another private, during which they were shot at by Germans and the other trooper got hit in the knee. They drank a bottle of schnapps each, and when Cobb was reprimanded by 1st Lieutenant Jack Foley for his drunk and disorderly behavior, he became violent and charged at Foley. Cobb was arrested and later court-martialed for his behavior."

Tom Hanks even enlisted his own son into this, that's dedication...This is when Winters essentially "Dad arms" and protects his men of Easy Company in anyway he can, even by lying to command. I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...and it worked.

Webster was wounded in Holland, he missed all of Bastogne which is why the other guys were resentful, those that recognized him anyway, not many original Toccoa men left at this point.

Just a slight correction, Webster didn't miss "pretty much everything" before he came back in the mix. He was a Toccoa man, jumped at D-Day, fought through France and Holland until he was wounded. He really only missed about two months before coming back. However, that was such an impactful two months (Bastogne) that he seemed like he had missed so much more.

As an Army vet, I hate to admit, but the Pacific is a better series. It’s not as inspiring as BoB, but that perfectly captures the essence of the awful sh!t that happened in the pacific. It’s sometimes downright demoralizing.

This is one of those episode where they took a lot of liberty in telling the story. Webster was actually well received when he got back to Easy Company. He also was shocked at so many men being gone that he knew, to the point where he almost broke down over it. But they didn't portray it that way at all. Also, Webster wasn't on this patrol, he was manning a machine gun covering the squads exfil back across the river. Forest Guth was the translator on the patrol. 'Lipton, he gone, he outta here?' Nooooooo. Lipton was an Enlisted man, in order for him to receive his battlefield commission as a Lt., he first had to be discharged from the Army as an Enlisted man, then he would take on his Commission as an officer. It's a paperwork thing, a procedural thing. Really? You want us to tell you the names of the men that are interviewed? That would just spoil it for you dude. That would be like me telling you right now, who lives and who doesn't. They'll let ya know who the men are, just be patient.

One person who did not like Webster that I know forsure is Malarkey. I listened to his audiobook about his time in Easy and was not fond of Webster and even stayed in his book that he had wished they would’ve focused this episode on someone else like Muck or Babe, a real soldier (his words). Even made fun of when Web got wounded in Holland and yelled out “they got me”

@@rocker966627 ... Yeah, I'm not saying every swinging dick in the company liked Webster, I'm saying the way they portrayed it was not accurate. From what I've seen Web didn't volunteer for much. He did what he had to do, but he wasn't one to take on more than that. There's a lot of Hollywood in this one. But, like Hollywood says, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Lieutenant Jones would go on to be transferred to the 508th, and a year later to the 970th C.I.C. attachment as a field commander. He was injured in a jeep wreck in Heidelberg Germany and although he recovered from the wreck, he would later die from complications due to surgery. He died on July 21, 1947 at the age of 23.

West Pointers like Lt. Jones were the career officers who were going to staff the army after the war, so by this point they tended to put them on the front for a taste of action then pull them back. He was later killed in a car accident in occupied Germany.

Spiers also ran closer to buildings during his run. He wasn't quite as out in the open as the episode showed. Another comment on a run: When Malarkey ran out to get what he thought was a Luger in the second episode, he said he didn't run near as far as that episode showed. It was a much shorter distance but he said it was still a stupid thing to do!!

The reason they were a bit frosty toward Webster, is because others that were wounded (some worse than Webster) went out of their way, even breaking with protocol, to get back to their unit as quickly as possible. Webster didn’t do that, but took all the time he could before returning.

Webster was convalescing in a hospital in England. The other guys who went awol to rejoin Easy Co.were in France, so it would have been impossible for Webster to have done the same thing. In his book "Parachute Infantry " Webster recalled that most of the men were glad that he was back. The treatment he gets in this episode was a little over embellished.

The reason the vets aren't named, is because if you see an 86 year old "Pvt. Smith" giving an interview, then you won't be concerned for him in any episode that shows him in a dire situation . You would know he lives to 2001, and you wouldn't feel any tension about his fate, so the show would lose it's effectiveness. They will be named at the conclusion of episode 10 (the only episode that gives the interviews at the end, and not the beginning), as well as the companion feature that most fans consider an official-unofficial episode 11. Talking about Webster: his wound was more serious than depicted. He was evac'ed to England, rather than one of the nearby field hospitals like the other guys - several of which left those hospitals (UNauthorized, of course) to go rejoin Easy. Webster being in a hospital across the English channel, he would not have been able to leave the hospital in the same way. When he returned, contrary to how this episode depicts, his friends were very happy to see him - especially once they learned he was unable to come back earlier like some other guys did. That's not to say he was popular, or everyone liked him. Webster had his fair share of guys that didn't quite care for him. Malarkey's memoirs paint a picture of him not really caring for Webster. The patrol did happen kinda how it's shown, but with completely different guys. Webster for instance, didn't go on the patrol either. And someone else has already commented that Cobb threw a grenade over the river putting the wounded German out of his misery. Side note - the voice of the "wounded German yelling from the river bank" is none other than Tom Hanks himself. Now, we come to Cobb (the "what are you looking at Webster?!" guy). Roy Cobb is yet another guy who wasn't given a very accurate representation in this series. The show depicts him being confrontational, argumentative, etc. Basically, a giant dick! He likely wasn't. The actual David Webster wrote in his book that Cobb was good natured, and a good soldier, which seems a far cry from how he was depicted throughout this series. The real Cobb was also at least ten years older than everyone else, having served in the army since 1934. He was with the 1st Armored Division in Africa in 1942, then while on the way back to the states after Operation Torch, the troop ship he was in was sunk. He survived, and signed up with the airborne when they were formed. He was already a professional soldier with combat experience when he started the training at Toccoa (episode 1) along with the rest of Easy, and then went through everything Easy company went through - with the exception of actually jumping out of the plane on D-Day due to taking shrapnel inside the plane before he could jump. If everyone else was at the end of their rope, he was REALLY at the end of his! The show depicts him having a really slight verbal disagreement with Lt. Jones, and SSGT Martin. In reality, the real Cobb was drunk, and assaulted Lt. Foley. He was court martialed, but he didn't get discharged right away. Turns out he was still with Easy when the war ended in Europe. He won't be depicted any more in this series, but those are the facts about the real Roy Cobb. He died of cancer in early 1990, at the decent age of 75.

So yes Lipton was discharged, as an enlisted man. There's actually a totally different process for being an officer and being an enlisted man (private through the myriad of sergeant ranks). If Lipton is gonna be a lieutenant. He has to be decommissioned as an enlisted man, and instead reinlisted as an officer. It's moderately rare for enlisted men to make this kind of a promotion, so that's why it's not as clearcut.

Webster did not miss most of everything. He did not get wounded on D-Day. He got injured at the Crossroads. Episode 5. He was there in Normandy got D-Day; Carrantan (ep3); MarketGarden (ep. 4) and again was wounded in Ep 5. He did miss all of Bastogne and the Bois Jacques. Those were really bad days and that’s why the company gave him an extremely hard time.

Dike might have had other responsibilities the men didn't know about, but if the men got such a negative impression that should tell you a lot about his leadership. Further, Dike might have been bad at tactics. But many officers are. The key is that they make up for their weaknesses, recruit and leverage the skills of others. Dike clearly failed to do this, thus his weakness completely defined him.

Webster was actually warmly welcomed back. The enlisted liked him, though the officers had a lukewarm opinion of him, showed little ambition and never did more than expected, never volunteered for anything. I guess they took some artistic liberties to depict how hard it might be in general for some guys to rejoin their unit. Also, Eion Bailey who plays Webster, took a few weeks vacations to India while the rest of the crew sweated their balls off filming Ep 6-7. So the producers told the cast to channel their envy/jealousy of Bailey into their character's contempt toward Webster. Tom Hanks provided the noises of the wounded German left on the far side of the river. A bunch of people in Ep9 will claim he plays a French soldier but that's inaccurate. Malarkey is the one out of Easy who spent the most consecutive days on the frontlines, hence why he's shown in this episode being so exhausted and drained.
