Coming up... the story of the mini-rock symphony Love is Like Oxygen from Sweet, a band once dismissed by critics as a "bubblegum group" focused only on making money. But with their final big hit, the band reached the pinnacle of their artistry, delivering a track that was a complete departure from their usual sound. SADLY Their redemptive success was short-lived, as their lead singer left the band amidst deteriorating health-at one point, landing in the ER for emergency heart surgery. On the operating table, he suffered 12 consecutive heart attacks, yet somehow, he survived. The story of how this musical triumph was created. Why Sweet should be more revered and what happened to one of the pioneers of Glam Rock is NEXT …on Professor of Rock.

From 1971 to 1975, they were one of the biggest bands in the UK, and one of the top groups of the Glam Rock movement….But after a three-year dry spell, with no hit singles, it was the unorthodox mini-rock symphony "Love is Like Oxygen” that catapulted the band Sweet back into the international spotlight The iconic riff from Andy Scott is easily the most unforgettable part of "Love is Like Oxygen," but there’s so much more to this track than just a catchy guitar line.
When you consume the full 6 minutes and 53 seconds of the album version, featured on Level Headed, Sweet's sixth studio LP, it’s an exhilarating musical journey. You’ll hear the catchy rock harmonies and melodies that defined the sound of Sweet, but you’ll also hear operatic and classical elements that you never thought you would hear from This band. The extended version showcases the band’s ability to blend powerful rock with orchestral intensity, turning a great song into a full-blown musical experience. Sweet was smoking hot in 1975, with back-to-back hits from their album Desolation Boulevard. The lead single from the record, “Fox on the Run” soared to #2 in the UK, and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by the rip-roaring banger, “Action” which peaked at #15 in the UK, and #20 in America. It was a smash around the globe- shooting all the way to #2 in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany:
But, then Sweet’s hot streak dramatically cooled off. They had severed ties with hitmakers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, and were determined to control their own destiny with no outside interference. The success of “Fox on the Run” and “Action”, the first singles written & produced without Chinn & Chapman, most definitely gave the band the confidence that they had made the right decision to do their own thing, but futility over two subsequent album releases made their label extremely nervous.
Lead Guitarist Andy Scott wrote most of the lyrics for “Love is Like Oxygen” in ’76, and tucked them away because he hadn’t come up with the right music to bring to his bandmates to record. In late ’77, Sweet was in Paris, France, at the Chateau Studios, getting ready to record what became Level Headed.
