You mentioned the "Paul is dead" rumors. I'm a retired teacher and about 30 years ago I was teaching study skills to my eighth graders. I was teaching them how to take notes from a lecture back when students actually needed to take notes with paper and pencil. I culminated this unit with a lecture they had to take notes on. I talked about Paul's "death", presented the clues from songs, album covers, etc., then debunked them. They were so freaked out by the clues, especially "I buried Paul "! I can't count the times that these eighth graders, now adults in their 40s, will tell me how much they remember and loved that lesson when I run into them in person or chat with them on social media. No surprise that Sir Paul was the inspiration to my finest moment as a teacher!

@@donpardo2510 that is an amazing film... even if completely fake, it actually spins a VERY realistic take on what could have gone down. Astonishingly plausible in fact... most of these "conspiracy theory" deals are utter shite - however the Paul is dead one is a legitimate one to ponder. They quite literally held a Paul lookalike contest... too many documented things that simply do NOT line up if "real Paul" was still around. Also, the assaults against John and George - both "mentally confused" and seem to have possibly been Manchurian Candidates (MK Ultra was a VERY real thing). It's well worth a watch, even if for a laugh... but it WILL make you ponder at least a little bit.

My jr year in HS, 1969, I gave a report in Speech on "Paul is dead". I had all the clues needed, Sgt Pepper's album, etc. I took my parents table top, open from the front, stereo to school so as to play the different songs and one backwards. Of course, I had to hand spin the turn table backward which actually turned out pretty good. Now I wasn't the best student in school but I did get an "A" and voted best report. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this. It's been a wonderful memory thru the years.

Lennon was quoted as saying the White album was the sound of the start of the Beatles breaking up. Some complain of the lack of polish, but for me, I loved it. The Beatles hold a special place in my heart. Their songs were so powerful. I was intrigued by the lyrics and the music itself was amazing. Paul is my favorite Beatle. I respected all the band mates because all had a hand in the music they had created. John was a little too much for me based on his strong opinions but that is what makes him the person we all love today. Paul taught me what love really is. Paul McCartney played an integral part of Rock History.

Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf was released in May of 1968. “Heavy metal thunder” is right in the lyrics. Although in the context of the song, it was referring to the distinctive sound of Harley Davidson motorcycles and the freedom of the road, as depicted in Easy Rider. But the term probably got conflated with that style of hard rock music. Was it the first hard rock song ever? No. But probably the origin of the term for the genre.
@BlazinRiver1
@BlazinRiver1 10 ай бұрын
Mars Bonfire wrote the song after seeing a poster with the words "born to be wild" and a picture of a motorcycle on a poster. Not sure how you came up with the Harley reference...good story though...haha. Actually Dave Marsh and Lester Bangs used the term in the early 70s but Mike Saunders popularized it and used the phrase in 1970 to describe a Humble Pie album.
@midnightrambler7716
@midnightrambler7716 10 ай бұрын
The song Born to Be Wild was in the film Easy Rider which featured Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda on Harleys and immensely increased their popularity. The sound Harleys make is distinctive from any other motorcycle and has a “heavy metal thunder” sound. It is one of the few sounds that are actually trademarked. A few others being the NBC chime and the MGM Lion roar and one or 2 others I can’t think of. I can’t say for sure whether Bonfire thought of Harleys when he saw a poster and wrote the lyrics, but that was the only motorcycle at the time with a “heavy metal thunder” sound. Bonfire actually got the term “heavy metal” from a William S Burroughs novel from the early 60’s called the Soft Machine. The same guy who wrote the Naked Lunch which was the origin of the term Steely Dan to describe a mechanical steam-powered dildo. Many believe that is the genesis of the term to be later used as rock got harder and morphed off into a branch called heavy metal. There were other bands like Iron Butterfly that were around at the same time (1968) with “heavy” or “metallic” themes. They described their sound as “heavy” yet “floating” light like a butterfly (the lighter psychedelic side of their music as well ) as in In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. So it’s hard to say for sure who exactly first coined the phrase to describe that particular genre of music but Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were playing it before the end of the ‘60s. Most people including myself would think of Zeppelin as more of a hard rock/blues band than metal and they are by today’s standards but heavy metal music was much “heavier” later on than it started out as.
@televinv8062
@televinv8062 10 ай бұрын
Yes, the term heavy metal is part of the lyrics for 'Born to be Wild'. Some music writer probably got it from that, it was a huge hit. Geezer last year: "When we were on tour in America, I think it was the second tour in the [United] States, I read this review, and the guy said, 'This isn't music. It sounds like a bunch of heavy metal being smashed together.' Somehow that got over to England, and from then on it was like the sarcastic thing they used to apply to us - 'this isn't music, it's a load of heavy metal being smashed together.' And for some reason we got stuck with it."
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 9 ай бұрын
the origin of the term came froma DJ on the radio describing a black sabbath song he said it was like the music got hit with radiation from Heavy Metal . it was specifically reffering to radioactive metals which are scientifically called heavy metals : plutonium, Uranium, mercury, Lead are some examples of heavy metals it as something to do with the number of atoms in their atomic make up that makes them denser than other metals (and typically radioactive /poisonous) . for example Mercury despite being a liquid ar room temp can float hunge chunks of iron or steel in it like they are wood. as for the steppenwolf song , yes it was refering to motorcycles but at the same time was comparing the sound of a harley to the rumbling of an atomic bomb .. hence the "heavy metal thunder"

Great song and definitely a road marker in rock history... but beginning of metal? Ehh... that's a stretch. Hendrix had way more chaos and mind-melting influence on the masses in '67 and '68... and Helter Skelter came out in the end of '68. Glad that you included a snippet of Sgt. Peppers in the video as it's one of my favorite rock stories about Hendrix finding out that the members of the Beatles were in the crowd, and then getting his bandmates to open the show with Sgt Peppers which had only been released to the public for a few days. ☮❤🎶

It was released in May 68 while Helter Skelter was not released until November 68. Then again, I always think of Vanilla Fudge's 1967 version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On' as the first "heavy" song that could be regarded as proto-heavy metail.

Fantastic deep dive into one of the most storied song in the rock era, well written episode touching on all the points. First heavy metal song is debatable but definitely one of them for sure. My first encounter with this song was with the movie Helter skelter about the Manson murders and the song scared the heck out of me as a child. Now I love the song and dismiss that cult as nothing but murders. Fantastic episode professor best breakdown on this song I have ever heard

You've outdone yourself this time, Prof. As a Beatle fanatic since even before the Sullivan show, you gave me some new stuff to add to my Beatlebrain. I'd never read/heard about the Who "I Can See For Miles" connection. That record was, for me, the beginning of 'hard rock'. I'd never heard ANYthing that seemed intended to blow the cones out of my speakers, like that masterpiece. The White Album was so dense that it took a few days to take it all in. I've never skipped a single track, but IF I were a track-skipper, Helter Skelter and Revolution #9 would have made my cue lever finger itchy. But I stayed with them having come to trust their musical visions completely by then. Now, though, knowing the outcome of that psycho and his culties' lunacy, I can't separate this song from that knowledge. DAMN them!

The musical diversity on the White Album is still out of reach. Together with Abbey Road my all time favourite. My favourite Beatle are the four of them. I knew again within the first 30 seconds that it could only be about "Helter Sjelter". I think I read the portion regarding the fall of the Roman Empire (that would seem more customarily in line with John's angle on writing muse than it would be with Paul's), but it drifted out of my memory. The part about how Macca was motivated to write it after reading the blurb from Pete Townshend was always kind of savory. Not the case with the insanity spawned by Charles Manson. Manson is definitely one of those prime examples of how dangerous it can sometimes be to leave some people to their own devices without proper mental health checking. I first heard the music from *The White Album* early in 1987, just before I became a true Beatles fan. All the music on the record sounded good to me, and "Helter Skelter" was no exception. I also remember getting a specific image in my head of the spiral slide on the playground where I went to school from '87 to '92 when I heard this song. Despite having not learned yet, my mind still reached out and found what it was looking for.

I was a child in the sixties, the youngest of 4 kids. The first music I heard on a daily basis was the Beatles. I bought their albums when I was older, and was obsessed with their music. All these years later, I've realized that I stopped listening to them so long ago that I don't think my 31 year old son has ever heard the Beatles. He knows the Tom Waits and Frank Zappa albums, but if I asked him what band had the albums, "Rubber Soul", "Let It Be", "Help!"... he would have no clue! I'm putting together a Beatles playlist to play while I'm cooking and crafting (that's when he has to hear my music, or leave the house!) What are some "must hear" songs that I should turn him on to? I'm starting with "Helter Skelter" to lure him in, since he likes metal. He has heard "Blackbird" because my parrot loves that song (he sings with the birdies at the end). He doesn't know it's a Beatles song though.

It's an amazing track!! It's like nothing they have ever done before or after. That is what is amazing about the Beatles. Paul deserves most of the credit for HS. His voice is so .....METAL! They played this track with Fender amps and without distortion pedals. All the members had their blood all over this track, and Paul must have been egging them on to play harder, play heavier, until all that angst poured out of them. It's definitely Heavy Metal before there was Metal. The Beatles ventured into unchartered waters on this song, experienced it on this track and then went on with other songs like Julia, Bungalow Bill and I'm So Tired. Completely different material. It's impact is lasting. Before Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, etc.

My dad then when on and told me about the Manson murders. He also met Sharon Tate. He went to school with her in Richland Washington. I listened to the Beatles version. My dad was right. The Beatles version was better, and from that song. I listened to all the Beatles albums afterwards. I realized how wrong I was about them. Even their 1st couple albums. Were great.

All I can say is - I was lucky enough to see The Beatles live, in Las Vegas in 1964. I was a young kid of 8. My sister was 7. My Mom knew that there was something important about The Beatles. She could not afford tickets for the entire family, but she got tickets for my sister, our baby sitter, and me. We were in the nose bleed seats, but still - we were seeing The Beatles. All I really remember was the announcer saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Beat..." The arena erupted with female screams that drowned out every other sound. Everyone was on their feet, which made it impossible for me and my sister to see anything. A lady in front of me pulled out two hunks of her own hair and passed out. I remember hearing a little bit of "Yesterday" as the crowd had calmed down for a moment - but only for a moment. It was nonstop bedlam - and an amazing memory.

My dad heard me playing it and filled me in on the history and the ties to Manson. With that conversation, two worlds were opened up to me at my young age of 10..The Beatles and Charles Manson. My dad made sure that I didn't let them be tied together in my mind by explaining what a madman Charlie was and how The Beatles were a movement in music. So I studied them separately and I'm glad I did. I would've been limited on my knowledge of both had I only studied their ties (which aren't legitimate)

In fact it is theorized that the focus on Helter Skelter was actually a red herring if you will, to cover up other possible motivations for the murders. Great job sir. I always enjoy your stuff🙂

Paul will always be my favorite. When John couldn't be bothered with his own son, Julian, it was "Uncle Paul" who made sure that Julian felt loved. He is just a genuinely great human being.

I always thought that was John saying "I got blisters on my fingers"! I saw Paul McCartney twice. Once when I was 11 and again in 2016

My favorite, and my first, Beatles Album was "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack, which I got as a Reel to Reel tape (when it came out) (My dad worked at Ampex*.) (I was eight.). I loved the instrumentals and "Hey Bulldog", and of course "Yellow Submarine." As always thank you so very much for the videos. (*fun fact: My dad's bosses wife at Ampex was a very nice lady, who even had dinner at our house on occasion. Years after my dad had moved on from Ampex, he saw me watching a Shirley Temple film, and said to me, "you know her." I was a confused for a second, then stunned when I recognized that the nice Mrs. Black was indeed Shirley Temple!)
