Bandai DX VF-19Advance Review

I remember the time when I saw these Macross Valk reviews and specifically the YF 19 ones, I was saying I would never have this stunning figures because there were and still are very expensive, but with perseverance and I think with some luck well look at me now !, I have now the Bandai Advance, Yamato first release YF 19 and Double Nuts, and finally the Arcadia YF 19, and I so damn happy, also YF 19 are my favorite design above all valks but coming very close are the VF 31's and the VF 0 ones. I always come here to see your videos to see how beautiful this birds look, so great videos you created here, so very good detailed and great quality.

This was a really interesting case whereby Bandai released their VF-19 almost as a direct competition to Arcadia's YF-19 - with multiple gimmicks and transformation innovations to boot. Don't know if they were trying to dominate the market or to one-up Arcadia, but it was bold nonetheless. Owning both toys, I have to say that they do indeed have their pros and cons. Personally speaking, while I agree that the VF-19 is a much better toy in the posing and handling department, I'd personally go for the Arcadia version - purely from an aesthetic standpoint. Why? It's the iconic YF-19 from Macross Plus - not a valk that only had 3 seconds of screen time.

+Actar Raikit The Arcadia is largely devoid of markings so if the rumored Bandai Mac Plus variant of this toy comes out later this year (and certainly the hard points on the wing support this notion) that will certainly move the Bandai offering into a more dominant position for Mac Plus fans. Of course the DX still won't capture the chunky feel conveyed in some scenes from Plus so there will always be a place for the Arcadia toy.

Well the advance packs look very good on the vehicle in each mode in my opinion and despite the fact that promotional pictures differ from reality oftentimes, though there are some on the box some people don’t like that Bandai did that at all I don’t have the details for why the pictures are different but it’s no big deal.

the funny story about the VF-19EF/A(VF-19ADVANCE): the one Isamu flies was originally a VF-19EF Caliburn, which was basically a monkey model of the VF-19E Excalibur that the N.U.N.Spacy REFUSES to deploy to their colony fleets. the Advance model was born basically because Isamu wanted to fly a VF-19A while working for the S.M.S, but was unable to procure one due to N.U.N.S regulations regarding VF-19s. This led to Isamu seeking out Neumann(the original YF-19's chief engineer), trying to get his hands on VF-19A parts, legal or not. Neumann refused, but instead came up with the "VF-19ADVANCE" project to his bosses at Shinsei Industries, to "prolong the service lifespan of the VF-19 series", and turned Isamu's Caliburn into what was essentially an upgraded version of his old YF-19 Excalibur. so....yeah, the only reason the VF-19EF/A exists basically boils down to: "Isamu wanted a VF-19A"

Well more or less the same as I heard of the story. My version is both or the chief engineer spend all his retirement money on this machine, yet, because a lot of the YF19 material and spec are top secret still, so this "Advanced" version still cannot out perform the original.

Same problem with my boosters, except the would even come close to going on all the way. I they did go down all the way they immediately popped off. I had to take a hobby knife and some sandpaper to the front of the grove in the pack where it meets the leading edge of the wing root. fits perfectly now. Good review.

I just got my yf 19 advance but unfortunately the wing boosters cannot be used out of the box a one of them doesnt align correctly an launches off the figure if touched.....

When will either Bandai or Arcadia release a 1/60 VA-3M Invader? Could care less if it's the space whaler version from Macross Dynamite 7. Had more screen time than the VF-4G Lightning III from Flashback 2012 and yet it got made into a toy. Do the franchise justice and make ALL fighters into toys, regardless of screen time. Do that and you'll have fans for life! Just saying...

I don't think that's a, "Pinpoint Barrier Punch," in the anime it look more like it's a how a Smasher Mantis Shrimp punches things. The smasher mantis shrimp punches so fast that a shockwave forms producing both light and heat. I watched the Macross Plus anime a lot, there's nothing to indicate that the YF-19 is using any type of Pinpoint Barrier system, you just see the shockwave forming around the fist as it's punching, just like what happens with a Smasher Mantis Shrimp, which was probably the inspiration for the effects for that scene in Macross Plus.

Hi ScorechedEarth, thank you for this comparison review. I'm in the market for one of these VF-19. Yeah, I'm super late in the game. I have a few questions if you don't mind. 1) What's the likelihood that we get a better version of this VF-19 by Bandai or by Arcadia at this time? 2) Have Bandai ever re-issue DX Chogokin? 3) Have Bandai ever release a better version of their older valkyries like ver 2.0 of XYZ Valkyrie in the past? 4) How is this DX VF-19 Advance compare to the new DX VF-31 by Bandai? 5) Last question is, know anyone who might give me a decent deal a DX VF19 Advance? Just kidding about Question 5 :) Thanks again!

Happy to help: 1) At this time? Very unlikely but Bandai does have an event in early December where they will likely be announcing plans for future releases so if you're very nervous, you can wait a couple months. 2) Yes, many times. The Alto YF-29 and VF-25 renewal version both saw numerous reissues (there are many other examples) 3) Yes, the VF-25 has a V1 which is poor in comparison to their 'renewal version' which is much much better. 4) They both feel like they belong to the newest generation of Macross toys (as they should). The VF-31 is more user friendly. 5) Hope for a reissue or a proper YF-19 repaint!

Yes. I already have a review of the Hikaru VF-1S Premium Finish version. I will probably review the M&M PF versions once both have been released and I have them in hand.

Thank you for the replies. Just as I decided on getting the DX Chogokin VF-19 Advance base on your recommendation, one of my friend said he recommended the Arcadia YF-19 instead. I am at a stand still. Really don't know what to do. Say... Why company call these: Arcadia YF-19 and while Bandai call it VF-19 Advance? What's with YF and VF differences?

There's a story that Isamu, well after the days of flying his YF-19 in Macross Plus, got a decommissioned VF-19A (production version of the YF-19) and had it upgraded including adding VF-25 type boosters and it has different markings on it. For toys it comes down to YF-19 = Macross Plus license, VF-19Adv = Macross Frontier license.

I agree most of your review but Arcaida batroid mode is far superior. I have both and I preordered YF 19 bandai version that will come out in Sept. But I think Arcadia batroid mode is way closer to Shoji Kawamori's original yf 19 drawing. My priority is more the outside look and sculpt than part line and extra detail. Bottom line is if you are die hard Macross plus fan. You need both. But If I have to choose one, then it's still arcadia one.

My nose cone tends to not tab tightly into the torso panel in batroid mode. It looks like the tooth on the peg isn't far out enough. Is this a common issue? I'm not really a dedicated Macross fan so I wasn't sure where I would ask this question.

+Coruptin Not something I have heard of yet. Did you check my transformation video to make sure you have that trap door underneath in the perfect spot? There's a lot going on in that area so it sounds like it might be a geometry/angle issue (hoping it's not a QC issue).

+ScorchedEarthToys Okay, it seems that the double hinge was just extremely tight and had a hard time getting into position. Thanks for those transformation videos. I didn't even think the hinge was supposed to bend in that direction.

No Fold booster

the VF-19ADVANCE never used a fold booster on-screen. the Bandai DX YF-19 Full Set Pack has a fold booster, because it's the Macross Plus version of this fighter.
