I'm more saddened that there doesn't seem to be a toy for the metal siren. These valkyries deserve some love along with the rest of macross mecha.

Got both of these meches! I keep Sofie Gena next to my PC moniter on a Tamashi stand in full SAP armor, while Nexx is kept on my bedroom night stand. =3

I've always liked the VF-2SS design, but the toy definitely disappoints me, sure it looks great, accurate even, but the mechanical engineering design of the toy definitely needs improvement, more in the parts swapping, scaling, and needs a bit more "solid" lock into the build.

Just picked it up (Xmas present to me) it’s not the greatest toy and design, but I mainly got it for nostalgia purposes. I’m a huge fan of the earlier macross mechs (even though I did pick up a vf-31f) so I don’t mind working on it to get it to work for me and my collection. Thanks for uploading this video. I’ve gotta do a little bit research for a good display stand.

Although I grew up with Robotech and therefore the VF-1, I prefer the sleeker VF-2 AND VF-19

Why is the VF-2SS valkyrie so hard to find? What I mean is that this valkyrie seems to receive no publicity or recognition, and that they rarely make any toy runs for it. It's a gorgeous design, and it baffles me why I don't see it more. Is Big West just holding the copyright and preventing companies from making it in higher numbers?

Given that some of the other Macross shows didn't do great and still got a fair amount of merchandise (like Macross Zero) it is a little perplexing. I've heard people say that the manufacturers were worried about offending Kawamori since he wasn't involved in the project but subsequently came back to 'own' the Macross universe. I suspect the complexity of the design is biggest turn-off for would be manufacturers. If a simple toy that did each mode justice could be made relatively cheap, we probably would have gotten more over the years but the Hi-Metal R and Evolution Toy VF-2SS prove that this design is HARD to do.

To my understanding, it's not canon and the actual anime wasn't received well...hence the cult/unpopular following. To be fair, I didn't really like the anime either, but I loved their take on the next gen veritech. I wanted one back when all you could get was a rare and expensive model. I'm way more happy with this high metal. If only they fixed the long wings and floppy chest. 🤤

yeah its no canon, and its supposed to be a continuationof events from 'Do You Remember Love'. I was friends with two people who lived in Japan both stated Macross II isn't canon because its based on events from the Macross movie, which is really a retelling of events for the citizens of Macorss city. So its a movie within a movie. The thing I hated about Macross II was you could barely see the mecha sans the action. further more in canon the next model after the VF-1 was the VF-4 Lightning. In order to see it in action you need to find the Macross Flashback 2012 dvd which is really like music videos and a few bits of dialogue after the events of the original Macross series. You can see it flying alongside the SDF-3 Megaroad . kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZirdJVtZap0mbc you can see the VF-4 at the 27:17 mark of the video.

I love the VF-2SS, I used to have a model of it that was a transformable model, but it wasn't that great of a model. There was no landing gear at all, not even a removable/replaceable kind. That being said my model only cost me $40.00 at a local anime/manga/ Japanese video game shop in hometown called Neo Tokyo. This was back in 1992 when this model was initially released. That was only $40. even though it wasn't as articulated as these in some cases, in other cases it was, the hand had opening and closing fingers that could grip its guns. Though my model was transformable it was only transformable with the SAP, you couldn't remove the SAP, and the legs had to be completely removed to transform between modes. Still a better buy than this $170 POS. I agree that the Metal R version does look better in all modes, but again it sure as hell isn't worth $170. I'm getting tired of seeing things over priced simply because they know adult collectors will spend that much money for it. I remember back in 2005 I bought a Transformers Energon Unicron from Walmart, brand new for $60. All of the new versions of it are about $300 now, these are new, not old, unopened versions whose value has simply increased over the years. I think all of this started with the Star Wars toys, when they rereleased the Millennium Falcon for the Special Edition movies they lost their damned minds wanting to charge $150 for the Millennium Falcon when that toy should've only cost $70. It's like all of these toy companies seen Hasbro do that with Star Wars so they all started jacking up their prices. If I spend $150 for a toy it had better be something the size of the G.I. Joe USS Flagg Aircraft Carrier, 6ft long. Now understand some creators making one of a kind custom pieces and charging a lot for it, but these are mass produced toys, there's no sense in charging that much for them.

You can't really use a model as comparison in price, as model omitted the most laborious and costly process in toy/figure manufacturing: assembly and painting. And your model is very old, which makes it even more less relevant. Because you know, economy doesn't stand still with inflation and all. You don't need to be majored in economy to know that. Recently Japanese figures/toys spiking in price and that's directly related to the state of their worsening economy. Only a decade ago I can buy a Revoltech in only a third of a price they're asking right now. That was only 10 years ago, how do you think a model from 1992 can be compared in pricing to 2018 fully assembled figure for adult collectors? I don't mean to justify it, does this Hi Metal R worth $170? Maybe no, not that much. But there's more to pricing than the size and raw material used and your example of GI Joe toys and that old model is way off from understanding that.

@@cnhnx Agreed, the guy above may dislike this Hi-Metal R model, but its simply more expensive because its an import. I'd still prefer to get this, or a Bandai VF-1S Hi-Metal R (which I actually bought) over something like the Toynami VF-1. Now that is a true POS toy.

Other than the pilot being wrong on the Nexx version, you have to give it to Bandai for making a decent version of an obscure mecha from Macross II. Including the armor and all the option parts and gimmicks was pretty cool too. Having all those parts makes for some great display options.

The small piece that needs to be removed from the arm for the arm armor installation looks small enough to be stored in the arm cavity. Is that true? It will be nice if that is possible, otherwise, it will be so easy to lose that small piece as you have said.

I believe you probably could store it there in battroid/GERWALK modes BUT that compartment can easily be opened on accident when handling the toy so it's not the safest storage area.

This design is really a much better successor to the VF-1 than any of the kibble filled messes Kawamori has come up with.

Are you kidding me? The VF-0, YF-19, YF-21 and the VF-25 are way better than this thing. You sound like a bitter Robotech/Carl Macek fanboy that hates everything Macross-related.

@@assoluto9327 lol yep, VF-25 is probably the best successor to VF-1 and YF-29 is right there too. For him to even consider VF-2SS a successor to VF-1 already tells me he isn't a real macross fan. That series is a outcast lol

I do 3D art as a hobby. One model I’ve made is a Yamato VF-1 Valkyrie. One change a I made was to make an additional folding wingtip, not unlike an F-18 Hornet. Except mine is a double jointed hinge so it can fold 180 degrees. The moving wingtip has the outer missile hardpoint on it, so the VF-1 can be a Batroid and still have six missiles on its butt. The inner pylons I switched out the missiles to be drop tanks instead. This VF-2 could use the same mod to clean up the long wings in Batroid mode. Then parts swapping to fix the “Mecha magic” of shrinking wings of a hand drawn cartoon.

I do really like the design of the VF-2SS but damn does it not take into account engineering and practical design the way Shoji Kawamori's designs do. The ugly, illusion breaking bits on the Hi-Metal R and the terrible construction of the Evolution Toys figure both make this apparent. It's just not a practical design, and imo looks more like an off-brand parody version of the Valkyrie you'd see in a comedic spoof bit some anime. Just a shame it's never really had a great toy, even with the Bandai offering being leagues above the earlier releases...
