Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) is a scientific technique used to probe the optical band gap energy of nanomaterials. Here in this video, I have used the Kubelka-Munk function along with the Tauc plot method to determine the optical band gap energy of Titanium Dioxide. This is the first video of DRS data analysis using the Kubelka-Munk function on KZbin. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me in the comment section.

Your video is fantastic!! Thank you so much!! I have a question, in "F(R)hv plot" there are many linear area (video 10:02). Then, which one should I choose when there are many linear invervals? Is it first one??

Very straightforward tutorial! Thank you. My question is, how to determine n (in your video you used 2?
@nanoworld6122
@nanoworld6122 4 жыл бұрын
It depends upon the nature of the materials. First of all, you have to check it for n = 2, If the graph didn't fit (tangent will not fit) for n = 2 then you have to check it for n = 1/2, It will probably fit on it.

My sample is also TiO2 , but I used exponential of 1/2, because most papers used 1/2, and TiO2 also has indirect bandgap in nature, is that ok? Because since you also calculated for TiO2 but you used 2

Can you explain how you determine the value of the exponent n in equation 2?
@nanoworld6122
@nanoworld6122 5 жыл бұрын
Good day Valerie Jacobson! The exponent "n" in equation represent nature of transition, i.e. n = 2 for direct band gap semiconductor and n = 1/2 for indirect semiconductor. How ho know about your material has direct band-gape or indirect? You have to plot the Tauc plot for both n=2 and n=1/2 and check it, if your material has direct band-gap, then there will be a sudden drop (the value of Y-axis will decrease rapidly) in Tauc plot for n=2, and if your material has indirect band-gap then there will no sudden drop in Tauc plot for n= 2. Then you have to plot and check your data for n=1/2. You will definitely observed the sudden change in Tauc plot either for n=2 or n = 1/2 and this is how you will get to know your material has direct or indirect band-gap. if you still have problem, then send me your data at fascinatingnanoworld@gmail.com i will plot it for you. Thank you.

But is there anyway to convert absorbance to reflectance?
@adripastor182
@adripastor182 4 жыл бұрын
A= - log(R) where A is Absorbance; R is reflectance. R must not be expressed in %. So, if you have a value of %R= 77,78 % , then R is 0,7778. So, A= 0,1086

How to know a UV-visible spectroscopy = Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy or Absorption UV-visible Spectroscopy
@nanoworld6122
@nanoworld6122 3 жыл бұрын
In absorbance spectroscopy, we record the spectra as wavelength vs absorbance or wavelength vs transmittance, while in DRS spectroscopy we record it as wavelength vs reflectance.
@remyann686
@remyann686 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. In addition, I would like to ask more questions. Can we use both cases for one UV-visible Spectroscopy( as DRS and Absorption Uv-visible Spectroscopy)? I noted that I could use both A vs wavelength and R vs wavelength for my lab Uv-visible Spectroscopy.
