Largely agree with your assessments. I think that vocals are critical to whether or not I can listen to most music. Rush and AC/DC are out for me. There are notable exceptions though. The first Rush album had a rough garage band sound and it worked for me despite Geddy Lee's vocals. After that, he has in my opinion, the worst voice in all of popular mainstream rock. I also agree with your take on the early work of Pink Floyd, however there are some gems to be found on Ummagumma. I would ask that you revisit and listen to the live album for Astronomy Domine and the studio album for Grantchester Meadows, and the instrumental cuts of the Narrow Way parts I & II, and especially the Narrow Way Part III which I would put forth as a great example of their earlier work. Finally, I am mystified with your take on Steely Dan. Aja was the sunset of their catalog for me. I find that the albums "The Royal Scam", "Katie Lied", and particularly "Can't Buy A Thrill" are their finest work.

You don't like Nickelback but how do you feel about Coldplay or Creed? Motley Crue or Ratt? You don't like Rush because of Geddy Lee's vocals. How do you feel about Bob Dylan? (for years I refused to listen to him because of his vocals but I loved his songs- and the covers done by other artists.) I now like him. (FYI I am a Rush fan lol) I kind of agree with you on Dream Theater. I put them into the virtuoso category. To me they are clearly gifted but their songs seem to go on and on. Melody wise they don't seem to ebb and flow it seems like whenever I listen to them I feel like I have just run a marathon and I am exhausted. (Again I am a big Rush fan and loved Rush's 7-9 minute tomes from their past but don't necessary like it when others do it.) What about a virtuoso guitar player like Tim Henson? He is incredible ...... for the first 3 minutes of a song and then it starts to sound like a drum solo that has gone on longer than 10 minutes. It is interesting who we all like and don't like.

The only stuff i cant listen to is Taylor Swift. Dua Lipa and top 40 in general. I listen mostly to new music, but not the junk on top 40. Todays best artists are War On Drugs, Nataniel Rsteliff, Michigander, Alabama Shakes etc

I do like some stuff that makes in into the top 40, but a lot of it is just garbage that’s pushed by big labels.

People are getting way too offended by someone's own tastes... Also, I 100% agree with you about Iron Maiden. To me Iron Maiden is hard rock theater, it is performance art. Give me Judas Priest or Dio over them
@slipwagon79442 ай бұрын
Every band/album you mentioned is leagues better than Taylor Swift which I know you listen to.

I was surprised at how much I agreed with you. For example, Rush, I like 2112 but Geddy's sqeaky vocals do my head in. ACDC..Back in Black is a great album but after that, how many times can you re-write the same songs? Iron Maiden's first 2 albums are worth a listen, I really do get the dislike of Bruce's vocals, he overdoes it too often, the best thing about them in concert is when they play the tape of "Doctor Doctor" by UFO ( one of my favourite bands). Queensryche, i've only heard their early stuff, Queen of the Reich is a great ep.

Totally agree on AC-DC overated boring can't stand Johnsons voice.

From what I've read the band picked Brian as Bon's replacement because he had a similar sound, but I think they would have been better served to go in a completely different direction.

I agree with most of what you said about Pink Floyd, but I couldn't disagree more when it comes to your opinions on Iron Maiden and Megadeath! Reading through the comments leads me to believe that this episode may have lost you a few subscribers. I liked and subscribed to help negate some of the damage.😆 While I might disagree with about half of what you had to say, I much appreciate the honesty. Too much pandering goes on these days, and it's nice to hear someone's true feelings.👍🏻

Actually it's been the exact opposite. I gained 10x more subs from the video than I lost, but I do appreciate the support. Honestly, I make videos about what I find interesting and not what I think is going to get views, but I know there are a lot of channels (especially music related ones) that say things just to be controversial.

Interesting opinions. When it comes to Pink Floyd's music, I have similar impressions.

Hi Nick, re your aversion to the Pink Floyd studio output 1967-1970/71, I can understand it-as you don't quite say the songs meander whilst having production values that don't redeem the material. But the point for the post Barret Floyd was to create work that survived being tested on the road-and the material entertained who it was played to '68-'73, and toughened the band up as a touring unit. The oddity being how the albums never went out of print. It is as if PF understood brand value early without admitting it. Would looking at the work of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets help you in any way? They do as good a job as anyone could do of making the old Pink Floyd sets sound alive and apt for 2024.

There are a lot of bands that I like some of their albums and dislike others. Rush was one band I could never get into, and that was largely do to the vocals. On the other hand, I think some of the early albums by Steely Dan were their best.
@TheVinylDen3 ай бұрын
To be fair, it's been several years since I've listened to Steely Dan's first couple albums. Glad to know I'm not the only one that feels that way about Rush.

I've never been able to listen to Pink Floyd either. It could be because, as teens, my brother listened to them nonstop. I don't listen to Rush because the singer's voice is irritating to me.

Haha that was funny. Im not particularly keen on alot of those American rawk bands you mentioned. Probably ACDC a greatest hits would suffice think i just have high voltage. Pink Floyd you either prefer the Syd or Roger stuff. They transitioned so there was a few that were them experimenting with directions actually i think atom heart mother is quite compelling even if it's disjointed i admit. Steely Dan and nickleback?! Steely Dan are at least interesting mumbling their words. Nickelback were post grunge and like yourself i drifted off music after grunge and britpop (here) which was huge along with various dance sub genres that broke alot of barriers down. Yeah i think Nickelback were truly dreadful. Sorta average Christian rock without any meaning to the lyrics. Well, it's all about opinions so thanks for sharing.

i'm with you on Brian Johnson era AC/DC. Back In Black was great but after that meh..the occassional song like you say. And this given Powerage is probably a top 5 alltime album for me. Bon Scott era was just so damn good.
@robertanelson84872 ай бұрын
I was lucky enough to be the youngest of 4 in my family. So my taste range from Bach to White Zombie. AC/DC best is with Bon. One of the greatest frontmen in rock. Rush's Moving Pictures is my favorite. Love the 87 Pink Floyd's album. 100% on biscuit. Punks not knowing what being a punk was in the 70s. You can disagree and be civil. Great video.
@TheVinylDen2 ай бұрын
I 100% agree that Bon was one of the greatest frontmen in rock! There was something special on the Bon albums that they were never really able to recreate with Brian Johnson.

Like you said, music is subjective, you either love a band or hate a band. Bands or artists which would be on my list are, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Eagles to name but a few, again, mega selling bands, they just didnt do anything for me.
@VinE836562 ай бұрын
I kind of agree with Pink Floyd. I am not a huge fan of the early stuff. Actually, I will be crucified for this but I found the Wall to be overexposed and too much filler. I also agree with AC/DC in general too - I’m a fan of the Bon Scott era and Back and Black. I love Rush, I knew they’d be on your list because of Geddy’s lyrics. Aside from Reeling in the Years and Do it Again, I really don’t like Steely Dan. No opinion on the rest, though I like Iron Maiden well enough.
@samstone61802 ай бұрын
Music is a kind art form because bands are defined by their hits rather than their misses. It is going to be impossible to ever find a great album from a band that you are only ho-hum about to begin with.
