Neat! That came out excellent Ty, and I also like how the end grain looks. What are you going to put in it? I've gotten in the habit of shooting shorter clips and just capturing enough footage to get the step across, then I turn it off. I actually keep all the raw footage though. I bought a 2TB hard drive, just to store them all on. I think it will be awesome to look back on when I'm good.

Thanks April. I really don't know what I'm going to put in it or if I'm going to keep it or give it away. I agree with it being awesome to look back and that's kind of why I would like to keep the raw video. I guess I just need to get better and only getting the video I need.

I got the video done this morning but then had a friend come over to plane down about 200 bd ft of alder. I'm leaving for a bachelor party in about 45 minutes, so when I was waiting for the video to finish rendering, uploading to KZbin and processing before it went live I started getting nervous. It probably took 1.5 hours to render, upload and process...

Great job, I love the idea of having the end grain give the face of the box so much character. I noticed at 4:00 in the video, you have a thinner blade on, when you pushed the piece through, you had a lot of blade deflection. Please, please, double check your thrust bearing when changing blades, that can be very dangerous. Wouldn't want anything to happen to you, we want to keep seeing more projects emerge from the monoloco workshop! Great job and keep up the great videos!

Hey Ty, so many times we see the exotic woods used for boxes etc and they are wonderful but very expensive. For me, how much better can it get by using a 2X4 and spending the additional time to sand & finish it to perfection like you did. For the weekend woodworking warrior like me, this is a great inspirational project.

Great little band saw box! Nice design and finish. Footage is kind of like cut offs. You don't want to throw them away, but they just over take you after a while. For now though, I'm using these little 2T drives that WD makes. They hold tons of footage and aren't very big at all compared to the old drives that were usually 2 or 3 hundred Gig. And before long, they'll get the SSD drives down to where us humans can afford them. They are even smaller. That will be sweet. Got one in my new editing computer. SWEEEEEET. And fast! Anyway, that's where I keep mine for now, on external hard drives. Oh did I mention organize, organize, organize. I'm still learning that one.
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, you're right about not wanting to throw them away but them over running you. I'm kind of a geek so I've got a decent 4 bay NAS (Network Area Storage) with a 1TB raid and a 3TB raid setup. I'm not sure if I added the extra 3TB by this video or not. I still find myself deleting all of the extra footage and only keeping the end render for each video as well as thumbnail and other images.

Hi Ty. I've just discovered your channel. Nice work with the bandsaw box. A little trick when gluing a stack of boards is putting some grains of salt on each one. The grains prevents the boards from moving, making the whole process much easier.

Very cool, like the way the stain pops out over the grain. With regard to filming, a technique we learnt is to create a story board before filming on paper first then you shoot too cut so that you dont end up with hours of footage you need to go through. It may help save you some space too.

nice work! I did notice a great deal of foreword and back movement in your band saw blade. looks like you maybe forgot to move the back stop bearing fwd on top and possibly bottom blade guides to touch backside of blade. this will help with efficiency and quality of your cuts. keep up the good work and thank you for shearing.

Try getting a stabilizer from Carter Products to use with the 1/4 and less width. It makes a huge difference in cutting around narrow corners. Using it with a 1/8 inch blade almost makes it like a big Scroll Saw!

The bandsaw box turned out great, the end grain on the front has an interesting patchwork feel to it. Planing your shots helps you lessen the amount of raw footage. But I also only keep the current project and the project immediately before it. All the remaining footage is deleted.

Thanks Fr. Thomas Bailey, OSB I guess I'll just need to make more videos and get use to planning things out a little better.

As a point of reference I shot in 60i instead of 60p, and I shot less footage now then I first started; for my entry I had 6GB of raw footage. The band box is very elegant, I really like the curves and the way the end grains mash up. Great entry. - John

Cool, I've only ever seen hardwood boxes, softwood looks good too. I was wondering, did you purposely chose the end grain front to back, I wonder if you were to have all the wood going the other two ways, or even a mix of the layers, the look wouldn't certainly be different, not to everyone's fancy I guess. Its given me some ideas though. Thanks.

+Ty Moser. I can only go down to a 6mm =1/4" blade on my bandsaw. It is a SIP 14" 2-speed bandsaw. I telephoned the company and they do not recommend that I go any lower than this. Do you think that using a 1/4" blade would be small enough to achieve the radius/curves for the bandsaw boxes that I want to try, typically the drawers?

Question; First, fantastic job! My question is we couldn’t see how you actually cut out one drawer to the next drawer. How did you cut out the two other drawers, the video didn’t really show it. Did you have to cut in to each base frame for each drawer? Thanks ML. By the way, we have two actual live Ewoks. Haha
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 5 жыл бұрын
Live Ewoks! To cut out the other two drawers you do about the same as the first one, you cut though the frame but in between the drawers. You'll want to make sure that all of the cuts through the frame are aligned so they'll all close when you clamp it back up and glue it but it's hardly noticeable. If you look at 3:25 in the video you'll see where I'm headed to cut out the second drawer and then if you pay close attention you can see the two cuts in the frame for the top two drawers. Hope that helps!
