Young Di Nero, young Michael Moriarty, others, Piney Woods - when I was in 2nd grade my little brother got diagnosed with a rare disease that was going to get him before adulthood. He passed at 24. We all lived and loved every moment with him, and him with us. This was our touchstone movie. Rest In Peace my little brother Gerry - the G Man.

"I was his pallbearer - me and some local boys. There were flowers from the club, but no person from the club. They could've sent somebody. He wasn't a bad fella, no worse than most, and probably better than some -- and not a bad ballplayer neither, when they gave him a chance, when they laid off him long enough. From here on in, I rag nobody"

@BUZZ BUZZ Oh i don't doubt that the majority of the movie was filmed at Shea, but i have been a Redskins fan since 1971 and have been on the field of RFK and seen it hundreds of time during NFL and old Washington Senators MLB broadcasts. When you see the Washington Post signage on the score board, that is RFK. That was probably MLB footage provided for the film.

A baseball movie that is not about baseball but about life & death. At this point the only other person who is supposed to know that Bruce Pearson is slowly dying is the erudite pitcher Henry "Author" Wiggins. But the secret has slipped out. Some players are aware.... others aren't. Coach Joe Jarosz knows and this knowledge makes him ashamed of himself.....

This scene was filmed at the old RFK stadium in Washington DC...sadly at the time, the Senators had moved to Arlington, Texas so there was no current club in our nation's capital....and would remain that way until the Montreal expos would become the Washington Nationals roughly 30 years later.
@msquaretheoriginal2 жыл бұрын
Just the scene where the tarp was being laid down. That's RFK. The rest of it was in an auxiliary clubhouse at old Yankee Stadium. They filmed in both Shea and Yankee Stadiums and the characters wore the numbers of then-current Yankees (De Niro wore Thurman Munson's #15, Moriarty Mel Stottlemyre's #30, Vincent Gardenia Ralph Houk's #35) so game footage could be edited in. There is one clip where Munson tags out a runner at home plate. Of course, then they screw up the continuity by showing a rain-drenched old Yankee Stadium with NO tarp on the infield.
@BobMarshall19525 жыл бұрын
One of the most underrated baseball movies of all time. A little bit flawed, I think Michael Moriarty was miscast; he was pretty bland. Anyway, this was a wonderful scene. Notice that DeNiro is sort of oblivious to the fact that the song was being sung about him. Another underrated baseball movie is "Stealing Home." Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster. Check it out.

Biggest problem with the casting of De Niro was he looks about 5'7 weighing about 140 pounds. Maybe he could have passed for a shortstop or a second baseman but not a major league catcher. Catchers are usually the bulkiest guys on the club. Moriarty really dressed like a player back then, and when they all sing that song the just look like players trying to sing.

I love how the lyrics match so well with a baseball team. "16 gamblers to carry my coffin." - Including the bullpen, the active players on any given game was around 16, since pitchers were on a rotation, and some players didn't dress but for a handful of games through the season. "6 pretty maidens" alluded to the players who dressed, but didn't play, their uniforms were always pristine white, and they looked quite fresh compared to the everyday players.

Not to take away from the movie, which I haven't seen. But Emmylou Harris along w/ Guy Clark wrote a great song about her father (Walter Harris, WW2 & K.W. fighter pilot & POW) which maybe borrowed from this scene and this movie!? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqW7kIVuoJZkppo
