The Greatest Generation rarely spoke much. However, they served so admirably and only in more recent times their stories have come out. Heroes! From all categories we now have objections to today. Quite a price they paid. Not only to keep our country free, but to not be a focus. It was just their heartfelt duty as being a part of this country with high ideals and constantly getting better. Now? Not so much!

B"H Very beautiful song and an inspiring performance. Your use of subtlety in various parts is brilliant. Always singing with your heart. Great duet. Always remember the true heroes who served to defend our great nation. May G-d bless you and your family always and forever.

This is an Emmylou Harris song she wrote for her Red Dirt Girl CD. I love her version and also Lisa O'Kane does a great version of it too!

Lyrics: I meant to ask you how to fix that car I always meant to ask you about the war And what you saw across a bridge too far Did it leave a scar Or how you navigated wings of fire and steel Up where heaven had no more secrets to conceal And still, you found the ground beneath your wheels How did it feel Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly To dust be returning from dust we begin Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy Above and below me world without end I meant to ask you how when everything seemed lost And your fate was in a game of dice they tossed There was still that line that you would never cross At any cost I meant to ask you how you lived what you believed With nothing but your heart up your sleeve And if you ever really were deceived By the likes of me Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly To dust be returning from dust we begin Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy Above and below me world without end Gone now is the day and gone the sun There is peace tonight all over Arlington But the songs of my life will still be sung By the light of the moon, you hung I meant to ask you how to plow that field I meant to bring you water from the well And be the one beside you when you fell Could you tell Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly To dust be returning from dust we begin Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy Above and below me world without end

We came home, most of us, and went on with our lives, most of us. Only once when traveling in uniform did a moron act on the idea that he was a better man for calling me names. A flight crew dead heading back, was sitting nearby. The two pilots had a quiet word with yahoo and his companion. We exchanged a look and a nod. I knew that they had served. Years later when people started saying thank you for your service it was uncomfortable, and though well intended, it was also too little, too late. Most of us did our duty, did what we were asked to do and moved on. We did not expect parades. Years later when my daughter asked if I was in a war, I told her yes, I flew a helicopter, which she understood. I told her I was a scout pilot in an Air Cavalry Troop, which she did not understand. Not long after that we in a NP having dinner when a small chopper landed nearby. She asked me if that was what I flew. I told her that in fact it was the very same kind. We walked over to see it, and I chatted a moment with the pilot who was in off a search and rescue mission. He hadn't seen combat and there was no feeling of brotherhood. My daughter mostly was amazed at how small it was but when she found out that we could not take a ride she lost interest. My service, my combat time, none of it had meaning for her. I rather liked that.
