The United States Army Field Band performs the famous Civil War-era piece, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Lyrics: Julia Ward Howe
Music: William Steffe
Setting: Peter J. Wilhousky
Arrangement: James Neilson
Conductor: 1st Lt. Alexandra Borza
Lyrics
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps,
His day is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me;
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free!
While God is marching on.

My great great grandfather walked the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory when he was 7 yrs old. His mother died at the hands of the US Army along the way. They lost everything and he and his father started life all over. His Faith kept him strong and when The Civil War broke out, he found Forgiveness, joined the North and fought in The Indian Homeguard. My family always looks back to the hard way of finding Forgiveness that he must had come to terms with. We are Indians. But, we are nobody's victim! God Bless your spirit, Grandpa John.

@CarlDenbow

The man who sang it was Charles McCabe, an Army chaplain. It was at a meeting of the Christian Commission in the Capitol Building. Chaplain McCabe was born and raised in Athens, Ohio. We are now trying to raise funds to put up an historical marker near his birthplace. The story is that Lincoln stood up with a tear in his eye, and said to McCabe, "Sing it again."

Stay vigilant Aussies. Fascism is once again on the rise and as you may have seen in America's politics, it's now closer to empowering itself in a way that will be very difficult to stop. They're being quietly funded by some very wealthy and powerfully connected industries that see fascism and a complicit dictator preferable to working within a democracy. I'm sure these same fascist forces are working behind the scenes there in Australia as well. God bless you guys. You've always had our backs. This time it may be the Australians that save America.

My grandfather lied about his age and joined the United States Army at the age of 14. He served this country for 44 years before he retired. I remember him playing this song all the time while I was growing up and even up until his last days. This song reminds me of my him every time I hear it. He was always proud of his military career, but most of all, we were proud of him.

My grandad did the same during WW2. He was 14, ran away from home and lied about his age to join the merchant marines. They eventually found out and sent him back home mid-deployment. He then lied again and joined the 82nd airborne division of the army. That generation is called the greatest for a reason. They saw things you and I can't even imagine at that age. Like most vets he never liked to talk about the war.

My grandfather was 35 in 1942 and denied entry into the military. He was so upset he decided to become a shipyard welder in Baltimore and helped to make Liberty ships. He may not have realized what he was getting into as the workload at times was nearly unbearable and he was required to work around the clock for weeks on end. But he never complained and would actually volunteer to cover every need. My grandparents also volunteered to house visiting sailors from Allied countries while their ships were being repaired. They made lifelong friendships with several British sailors this way. A different time and a different attitude. True American patriots. God Bless them, may they rest in peace. So glad they didn't have to witness the insurrection in our nations capital with treasonous members of the Far Right actually daring to carry Nazi Reichskriegsflaggen, swastikas and confederate flags side-by-side with the American flag.

As a black person who grew up in black churches (specifically AME) this songs always moves me to tears. We used to always sing this song during black history month. It always gives me chills when I think of all those men who despite being scared, and knowing they could meet death, were driven to preserve the union and free the millions held in bondage in the south because they felt it was the right thing to do. Just leaves me speechless

Does the song move you to tears because you are a black person growing up in black churches or because of its historical significance? The politicians and media have now convinced seemingly everybody to view things through a racial lens. What is a “white woman of color” and what’s up with all the weird, improper capitalizations? I’m convinced people are getting dumber. The song is historically significant because the civil war was killing Americans on both sides. All casualties were Americans. This started a much needed transformation in America that ultimately led to where we are today. You know, back to prefacing thoughts with racial qualifications. This woke shit is going to lead to another civil war. How horrific is that? Your second paragraph is perfect without the preface. The second comment is just a woke ass liberal who offered nothing significant but peddles the woke crap currently dividing our society. We’re screwed if this stuff continues.

It’s so hard to watch what taught hatred does to people. It’s so sickening and gut wrenching to believe this was America. Sadly, it’s reminding me of the hate that #45 is still shouting out to his worshipers😢 Learning how close we came to losing our nation to a wanna be tyrant/dictator/king is making this 4th of July a somber and reflective holiday. Praise the Lord for the ppl who kept their oath and didn’t sell out to #45’s schemes. What is up with the White Woman of Color reference? I agree about the woke crap. You should check out the original version of this song, "John Brown's body". John Brown by William W. Patton Old John Brown’s body lies moldering in the grave, While weep the sons of bondage whom he ventured all to save; But tho he lost his life while struggling for the slave, His soul is marching on. John Brown was a hero, undaunted, true and brave, And Kansas knows his valor when he fought her rights to save; Now, tho the grass grows green above his grave, His soul is marching on. He captured Harper’s Ferry, with his nineteen men so few, And frightened "Old Virginny" till she trembled thru and thru; They hung him for a traitor, themselves the traitor crew, But his soul is marching on. John Brown was John the Baptist of the Christ we are to see, Christ who of the bondmen shall the Liberator be, And soon thruout the Sunny South the slaves shall all be free, For his soul is marching on. The conflict that he heralded he looks from heaven to view, On the army of the Union with its flag red, white and blue. And heaven shall ring with anthems o’er the deed they mean to do, For his soul is marching on. Ye soldiers of Freedom, then strike, while strike ye may, The death blow of oppression in a better time and way, For the dawn of old John Brown has brightened into day, And his soul is marching on.

My father, a WWII veteran, went on his final mission last night. From the rolling hills of his boyhood farm to the struggles in the South Pacific theater or throughout his life, dad never complained. Whether it be walking behind the plow, enduring the eternity of "forever" being soaked in the jungles of the Philippines or the machine and labor work he found himself in throughout his career, dad stayed focused on the job breaking stride only for the meal at hand or an allotted water reprieve. You ask "how do I know he was like this in the times when I did not even exist"....? Being with him through the days and months and years that we had together is evidence enough, for me. He WAS part of the generation that gave l i f e and m e a n i n g to the words - FREEDOM and SACRIFICE. It is tough, realizing the fact that I can no longer speak to him and give him a hug and say "I love you", here. Yet, as the last song he sang with my sister the day before he went Home says, "Glory, Glory Hallelujah ......HIS truth is marching on" - it speaks of hope - in the 'One Faithful and True', rest - with a "peace that passes a l l understanding" and a courage - to fulfill the call of lifting high the banner of the One and True Living God, who sustained dads march through this life of 97 years - Jesus Christ. Rest well dad. Until I too cross unto the golden shores.

This was rewritten...this was not the song the soldiers marched to. They marched to John brown's body. A lady heard them singing the song and made her own rendition. It's a beautiful song, but the original has so much more meaning behind it. The original was what the soldiers were singing as they marched. John brown's body lies a moulding in the grave, while weep the sons of bondage whom he ventured out to save and though he lost his life in the struggle to free the slaves , his truth goes marching on. John brown's body lies a moulding in the grave x3 and his truth still marches on. John brown was a hero undaunted true and brave, kansas knew his valor when he fought their rights to save, now though the grass grows greener above his grave l, his truth still marches on Glory glory hallelujah x3 His truth still marches on He captured harpers ferry with his 19 men so few, and frightened old virginy til she trembles through and through, the hung him for a traitor, though themselves a traitorous crew, and his truth still marches on He's gone to be a soldier in the army of the lord x3 and his truth still marches on John brown, was john the baptist, of the christ we are to see, christ of who the bondman shall the liberator be, and soon throughout the sunny south the slave will be all set free, and his truth still marches on Glory lory hallelujah x3 and his truth still marches on. The conflict that he heralded he looks down from heaven to view, on the army of the union with it's flag red white and blue, and the heavens will ring with anthems o'er the dead they mean to do, and his soul still marches on Glory hallelujah x3 and his soul still marches on Ye soldiers of freedom then strike while strike ye may, the death blow of oppression in a better time and way, for the dawn of old john brown has brightened in to day and his soul still marches on. "Jesus was sent here to die for us, John brown wasn't, and he did it anyway" though the battle hymn republic is a beautiful song, john brown's body was the song the soldiers marched to, the taking of harpers ferry and hanging of john brown was the catalyst of the civil war, we should never forget what he sacrificed for the good of mankind.

C0I5 Gaming USA is a human nation, therefore it’s not perfect. However, USA has the ability to improve itself over time if it so chooses. Our Republic and it’s citizens have a good feel for right vs wrong and we are allowed to express ourselves freely and exercise power to correct our national course. A big problem we have is that we stopped heeding the words of our first President after WW2, which was to stay out of foreign entanglements. The American Republic was never designed to field military bases all over the world, nor was it designed to handle imperial ambitions and colonies. We were designed to be an isolated self-reliant Federal Union of Semi-Sovereign Nation States governed by Republican Virtues and defended by patriotic God fearing free citizen-soldiers serving in regulated state militias. Free Civic-minded citizens whom can speak their minds freely, keep and bare their own arms, own property, and pursue their own happiness. Like Rome (a federation of Republican city-states interestingly enough), US became an empire by accident. I honor our servicemen and women who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I thank them for their sacrifices, they are real heroes and I am thankful beyond words for them. However, we never should have been there in the first place. It was a strategic mistake that quite frankly only benefited China. Saudi Arabia and I suspect China were the main players behind 9/11. Our unnecessary entanglement in foreign affairs is how we ended up there. It’s what cost the lives of so many good American heroes. The Petro-Dollar system, international finance/cheap debt consumerism, and our taking up the mantle of world police is what has caused most of our current problems, including our slow moral decline. There is fair criticism there. However, USA doesn’t deserve to collapse. Very few nations in history have handled the degree of relative power we have amassed since WW2 as gracefully and as benevolently as ours. For example, Canada and Mexico are still sovereign nations, the Japanese and Germans are still a people, and instead of attempting to conquer the world we have attempted to build a peaceful union of sovereign prosperous nations to stand besides us. Most hegemonic nations do no such thing. With half of the world’s GDP, more manufacturing power than all other nations combined, and as the only nuclear power in the immediate aftermath of WW2, we could have conquered most of the world if we had so chosen in the late 1940s. Most nations similarly positioned would have made that move. The Soviets obviously would have. My source for this claim is pretty much all of recorded human history. If the dark day ever comes where the PRC or Russia run the world, I very much suspect the world will miss our era of hegemony. As the expression here goes, you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. USA is an exceptional nation, I’m proud to be an American, and I love my country. I know America will recover from this and will have another Great Awakening. I believe in my fellow citizens. Both on the left and on the right. It may take some hard times for us, but America still has a destiny and good to do for the world. It’s a real shame to see Americans such as yourself having such a negative opinion of their own country.

The Cold War - Shamefully Neutral. Every German fighter I ever spoke to said that if the US did not get involved they, the Germans, would have won. Colin McDonald Typical whining Brit jingoism. Ask yourself what the Indians think of the British. Or the Australian Aboriginals. Or the Maori, the Irish, the Argentinians etc. If the British, in their cold blooded lust for vengeance against Germany after WW I armistice, had negotiated a "just" treaty at Versailles, WWII would not have happened. Maybe then the world would have been spared the genocidal implementation of another great British invention - the concentration camp... The Brits love to overplay their role in WWII. The reality was that their role was minor compared to the USSR and the USA.

@@ultraman187 Thank you my friend. I'm not a communist and I do not support Pooteen's terroristic regime. I really admire American fight for freedom, unfortunately it's imposible in Russia because the strongest, smartest, brave people here were killed due the soviet repression period and we are slaves, prisoners of regime here, and now Russia is a pretty big problem for whole the world. Of course, US isn't perfect but in my opinion this is the best system of society construction at the moment.

This song fills me with pride and I’m not even American, I’m Aussie and I can only imagine the sacrifice the allied soldiers put themselves through in the last century to defend those who couldn’t defend themselves. Respect to all those around the world who die so the rest of us may stay free!

This is such a powerful song in its own right, but to hear servicemen and women play and sing such an emotional and dynamic arrangement of it adds so many more layers of moving. Thank you all for your service, and your beautiful performance.

My favorite verse in the song is: “In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free While God is marching on”. Glory, glory, Hallelujah!

@@figjam59 You are correct: "Let us die to make men free!" This is, after all, a BATTLE hymn; it was meant to be sung by men going off to fight in deadly combat; men who knew that they and many of their brothers might not live to see another day.
