I visited Thailand twice before I moved there for work in '01. What I quickly realized was this. On vacation, you had little to no chance of meeting a 'normal' Thai woman no matter what your situation. However, once you began working for a company, you interacted with these women daily and many of them wanted to date or have a serious relationship with you. Being in that situation caused me to view barhopping as a waste of time and I never frequented them again. Anyway, another high-quality video, Pat! You keep bringing back old memories for me.

I've been to Thailand multiple times, but I am also in my 20s. I loved the night bar scene, and found it very easy to find real relationships away from the bars. Some of my best friends I still talk to I met in Thailand. Going back in November, I can't wait.

Great ! I agree, even when you visit for a brief period. Pat has a great channel and it's the first time I believe he's addressed this. At the same time, other channels only profit and exhaust this angle. Their followers are the ones that hail a taxi to Pattaya upon BKK arrival. Most old and dilapidated with fallen ego's rise when told they are handsome. 😀 Channels like @thailandbound cater to these type of fallen men. His monger minute is akin to the drop at a EDM venue, and frenzy of deplorables get wilded up again. The next drop is for. "Spot the Lady Boy" which activates another frenzy amongst the downtrodden.

Great video Pat and some great points. I married a Thai girl in 2006 (met in 2003) and 17 years later we are still together. A few of my English friends raised their eyebrows and predicted doom and ironically since then some of their marriages have gone down the toilet. The culture did provide challenges at first to both of us but you meet half way and learn to understand one another. Best thing I have ever done.

Thanks for the video Pat. I have been coming to Thailand since the 90s, been working here for 15 years. Write and speak the language. Never wanted a non bar girl. Never once tried to “date” a “normal girl” I’m just happy with bargirls. They are my level. From what I hear from my mates who have “normal” girls, they are just as bad. I hear you talking about trying to meet “higher “ Thai ladies and the thought fills me with dread. Just so much wasted time. This is a very perceptive well balanced vlog in my opinion Pat. Having travelled to Thailand for many years and NOT having fallen into a bar girl relationship it didn't stop the nudge, nudge, wink, wink comments from friends and work colleagues. Sadly Thailand still comes across as a country of sleeze and more sleeze. Such as shame as anyone who has travelled around the Kingdom will know there is so much more than Soi Cowboy etc etc. A lot of lonely men are attracted by the thought of meeting a 'dusky maiden' in the land of smiles. Sadly Western women take a dim view of this, more so when a financial transaction is involved. I have heard many times, 'Why don't they just find someone of their own age here'. Well maybe if they looked in the mirror the answer might be staring them in the face!

Hi Pat, Excellent vlog. Really enjoyed the old videos and pictures of Pattaya and Bangkok. You could say I'm one of those happy endings. Met my wife 20 years ago (now married for almost 18 years). When we met I was 33 years old, and she was 22. She was and is a beautiful lady both inside and out, but it wasn't love at first site and I entered our relationship with a lot of trepidation. When we met, I was not looking for a girlfriend, I'd been burned previously by a past Thai girlfriend. But over time she grew on me and there was a Hawaiian expat community that I was friends with that gave me the support I needed to take the next step. I was able to make our relationship work by being honest with myself and her and really embracing the Thai cultures and norms. I've never lived in Thailand but was able to mold my work into allowing me to have a two week block off every month and I had the means to make the 6 or 7 trips a year to Thailand.

Agree with Rob - Thai women are very good at showing love and making you feel loved, wanted, needed. For a lonely man, regardless of age, that feeling (or risk of losing that feeling) will make you do things you'd never dreamed you'd do at any other point in your life.

I have lived here since 1977, so your old footage is very familiar and a lot of it doesn't seem that old. I have been happily married for that last 26 years. I learned to live in Thailand on my own, I learned the language and generally got a life before I met my wife. I wasn't wife hunting or lonely so things happened more naturally with real love, chemistry and attraction. Coming here as an emotional and financial refugee is a recipe for disaster in my opinion. I try not to judge but I keep my distance from the impending train wrecks as I don't want to deal with the drama. In my opinion the most important thing is to know yourself. People like to blame Thailand or Thai girls but it is all down to the guys, in my opinion.

Spot on observation Pat @10:20 mark. Too many Western women have made themselves unappealing to Western men. I will happily admit to traveling to Thailand partly for female company. Now as a short-term visitor and not a expat I don't have the time for proper traditional dating, though I have great respect for that. So it's ThaiFriendly and bars... I think I'm one of the lonely guys you referenced rather than a "monger". If I meet someone I like I stay with them, and treat them very well. Try to make it an enjoyable shared holiday experience. But I'm not naff enough to think it's anything but a holiday romance. It's over when you return to the airport. I feel sorry for the guys who lose sight of that.

Nice video, Pat, and thanks for the old video clips. Reminds me of the first time I went to Thailand in the 1980s. Single men can have a great time in Thailand, but it's important to remember that any relationship you might strike up with a bar girl is going to be transactional. She gets money to send home to the family, while you are rewarded with good company during your stay. Keeping things simple and not getting too involved is the best way to go.

Thanks Pat, great vid, one of your best. I've only been over there a few times, but I always really look forward to my trip over there. Even now, when people say it's changed, that people are not as friendly as back in the day, I have to disagree. I'd give anything to nip down to my local coffee shop in Sukhumvit Soi 8 for a coffee. A relative fell in love with a bar girl in Pattaya but thanks to the pandemic this ended when she started asking for money to be sent to help support her family. He is now talking about moving to Koh Chang and spend his days fishing. I am hoping that this works out for him as he doesn't have much for him at home.

@@shaunashton9744 koh Chang is an excellent place to see out your days. I know Thailand well. I actually lived Pattata area 2010 to 2015. And survived with my sanity!! In my early 50s now and working UK. Planning my return to Thailand🇹🇭 Had 2 long term Thai girlfriends over the years. One for 5 years and the last for 7 years. But pandemic lock down closed that relationship. First girlfriend I took out of the bar when she was 23 and lived together Pattaya. Second was lovely mainstream Thai professional. Both were lovely ladies. Circumstance broke relationships down. Don't listen to all the horror stories. I have fond memories of my ladies. Looking forward to finding the Third. She won't be a bar girl. I'm too experienced for that now.😉😎

If I had to guess Pat, I'd say that many blokes (not all) that move to SE Asia have been in "loveless" relationships for many years prior to making the move toThailand etc. I also think that most people just want to be loved! Great video Pat, quite a contentious topic and I enjoyed musing it with you on our walking tour (If you are in Bangkok and want to see a different take on the city then I can highly recommend Pats tours!). I certainly don't begrudge those that come here because the dating scene in the West has become abysmal. I'm (the Dad here of our duo) and got branded for marrying a Mexican (a real one, not the Cheech and Chong 'East L.A.' stereotype); the easiest thing snooty people from 'Western Countries' love to do, to make themselves feel better I suppose, is to cast suspicions on who my wife is, what her motives truly are, and what a loser I must be... How true about many western women/wives! (especially the aging ones) hahha! Once they get past 40 they become professional whingers and naggers and believe almost any old rubbish that the media tell them to. I'm married to a Thai lady (just a normal one who works in a normal job ..not a bar girl) and she just keeps getting better and better over time like a fine wine. There's only a 10 year age difference between us though, so generationally we're not far apart. Age difference is something men should take into account if looking to marry a Thai lady. If your 60 and she's only 22, there's a huge difference in age to overcome!. Not many men in their 60's (unless they are wealthy) would be dating a 22 year old back in their home country, yet they think that such a thing will be absolutely fine in Thailand for some reason. If men marry women who are closer to their own age it will increase their chances of a much happier and more faithful and mature relationship. There are plenty of extremely beautiful older Thai women if one takes the time to look for them. (not in clubs!) I'm not saying that the age thing runs across board, as I'm sure there are couples with a 20+ year age gap who still manage to make their marriages work, but it's just common sense really. Tell your son that it's easier to take the bar girl out of the bar, than it is to take the bar out of the bar girl! Cheers! Wishing you and your wife another 22 years of blissful marriage.

Different to your other videos Pat, but quite interesting... personally I would say a lot of guys opt to hang around with the bar girls and go-go dancers simply because of the language barrier. Most of the goes in the entertainment industry speak pretty good English because I hang around with foreigners will know why. So if a guy is struggles to communicate with a regular Thai girl I guess talking with a bar girl who he can communicate with just seems like an easier option even though we all know it's a bad decision.

The first time I was in Thailand was 25 years ago. At the time, it seemed like paradise. I stayed in a beautiful hotel, the staff were smiling, the nightlife was exciting. You met other foreigners who told you that the girls at the bar were often already married (which was true), but that they were tired of Thais who were always drunk and often beat the girls. In the years that followed, I kept coming back, for longer and longer. I had various "affairs", but I was always a bit suspicious. Naive as I was, I thought I had to be loved for my own sake. As a tourist, it is pretty hard to find a 'normal' Thai girl, willing to spend time with you. I know many Farang guys that have lost the lot to a wee lassie from Issan and an old mate of mine from Newcastle got hold of a Bar Girl and he told me she seems to love him and I mentioned to him that if he keeps thinking along these crazy lines he soon will be building her a brand house in Issan, he told me to F Off.. He built her a huge bloody House in Issan last year and doesn't want to know me. When a Farang guy tells me ''She is not like all the other girls''.. it reminds me of seeing a Junkie with his needle in his hand while spanking his veins and saying...'' I think Thailand itself is a easy place to fall in love with just due the variety of lifestyles you can have here. Me though I watched a lot of KZbin and listen to a lot of stories and done my research before moving here. And sorted out my own issues prior to coming. As unless you sort out your past issues before coming they just follow you. And when you are going to date here be clear on your head what are you coming here for, fun or relationships. I think Nana is one of those places you would go to party and not for a serious relationship. But you can understand why guys do fall for these girls as they can be very charming from the stories I have heard, and also they are generally dressed all sexy which lures allot of guys in who now as you said think they are a 10 now. Going to these places is a big boost to some people’s egos.

You are absolutely right. People go to Pattaya or Soi Cowboy expecting and seeing the tourist holding hands with the woman 30-40 years younger and scream - “That proves my point!”. What they need to do is drive an hour outside Bangkok and observe the Thai-western couples in Big C. They are normal happy married families.

There used to be a newspaper columnist and blogger who had the rather unfortunate name of The Bangkok Stickman, and as a side gig he would work as a private investigator doing background checks on woman for expats who were considering marriage. I'm sure such a service still exists, or maybe The Stickman is still working? He was an insightful and colourful blogger, I do have to say. Great vid! I probably fit into many of the stories that you told. I came to Thailand for a one month holiday in 2003 with about 500 bucks. I never went home. Like many, I taught English, lived in a cheap condo, and went out almost every night to the bars. 20 years later, I have been very happily married for 18 years to a great Thai woman and have a wonderful 17 year old daughter about to go to university in Australia. It worked out for me. And believe me not because I am anything special. Far from it. It worked out for me for one reason only. Two weeks after I arrived, after going out and getting drunk every night, I decided that if I was going to stay in Thailand, I couldn't drink. I could still go out to bars and all that, but I couldn't drink alcohol. I could see very clearly what was going to happen to me if I continued to drink while in Thailand. I took myself off to a AA group (amazing bunch of guys all of which do not drink - no chance of ever getting lonely and automatic group of friends who you can hit the bars with and drink "nam soda."). For me, I know beyond any doubt that decision not to drink radically changed my destiny in Thailand. You don't need to consider yourself an alcoholic (I never really drank that much) to stop drinking and enjoy the destiny-changing benefits. Being sober in Thailand makes for a VERY different experience. During the last 20 years, I have seen this again and again. For me (and I have noticed with many others) even a couple of beers was enough to screw things up. There is something about the mixture of the freedom in Thailand, the women, and alcohol (no matter how much) that seems to be a recipe for disaster for many. My wife said that the thing that really attracted her to me was that I did not drink. Even before I met my wife, I noticed that I was attracting a different type of Thai woman by not drinking. The ones that were attracted to me because I didn't drink just seemed to be of a better character. Whereas sometimes, a Thai girl (usually a bar girl) would get really angry that I didn't drink. I found that very strange at first but then a Thai female friend told me that they knew that if I was sober I was not an easy mark as well as the Buddhist idea that a non-drinker is a good person and they didn't like the karmic repercussions of scamming a "good person." Anyway, if you are staying in Thailand, at least consider giving up the booze. You'll be amazed. Cheers.
