I stayed in the area about a couple months watching my pennies dwindle. Stayed in a pokey roo shard bathroom above a bar. Can't recall name but withing 100 mtrs of Malaysia Hotel because that was the only address I could give to TT drivers. Can't remember mush as was off my face frequently with growing pains and booze. Met some good Thai folk in the area but no good foreigners who were mostly ex SAS.

As I’m sure most are aware. The top non quality tourist are the Russians. They’re rude, tight, think the own the place and just downright low quality people for the most part. Yes there are still good quality people but for the most part that’s what it is. I live in Phuket so I know what I’m talking about. They also don’t try to assimilate into the community, rather they buy up properties and turn it into their own community.

Great YT about this topic Pat unfortunately there are quite some annoying tourist. I experience that also over the years. Really sad lot's of Chinese tourist but they all paid almost everything in China money must go to Thailand. The way Indian tourists haggle over prices is really rude saw that many times. But I saw also some western girls walk almost half naked in Bangkok as if they are on the beach really sad. But in the end the government only cares about the money .

Funny, because when I took a bus from the south to Ekkamai, the driver told me it would be better for me to get off at Bang Na and take public transport from there. I thought it was a scam since I had paid for Ekkamai and I guessed he was gonna sell my seat to someone else. But then I quickly realised the guy saved me from a lot of traffic jam that day.

Good info and insights here. Thanks. I'm heading to Thailand this Saturday as a "Quality Tourist." I'm going to avoid white trash, brown trash, and anyone acting like pigs at a trough. I'll stick to mid-range to upscale establishments and transit. That has worked for me across Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the USA; I'll give it a go there too.

1:37 The Thai letters above the logo says ฟีนิกส์ so it should be pronounced "phoenix" (FEE-niks) like the mythical immortal fire bird creature. Fun fact, it is required that the Thai name/pronunciation be printed at the top before everything else for store names, which is why you'll always see the Thai name/pronunciation be printed in a tiny tiny font tucked in the top right corner because it's technically still considered at the top before the actual logo.

Good to see you talking to Steve Pat. I'm ashamed to say I once lifted a face flannel from a boutique hotel in Sri Racha. It maybe fairly common in the UK, but was very much frowned upon in Thailand. I certainly won't be moving to Phuket when it comes to retiring. I'm sure new areas will emerge in 10yrs, that tick most of my boxes.

Fascinating subject, Pat. The main problem I saw with Chinese tourists was their sheer numbers. They crowd the beaches and roads. Don't go near a buffet where there's Chinese! But Steve makes in interesting point - they may not be putting much money into the local economy. Every nationality has its problem - Americans are loud, Indians cheap (mostly), Russians are psychos, Brits are booze hounds, and we Aussies are appalling dressers!

I have been few times to Thailand and I loved it. Thailand is a beautiful country, and Thai people are some of the nicest people out there. Prostitution is a very, very small (negligible!) part of Thai experience, even in Pattaya. Many uneducated westerners, some of whom have never been to Thailand, mistakenly associate Pattaya with sex industry. Beaches, infrastructure and overall experience in Pattaya, in my view, is better than that of the islands. I find it very hypocritical of many Thais, Pat included (very much!) who are quick to blame "western men" for sex industry (up until recently, at least). Prostitution needs supply and demand, and Thais are very good on the supply side (no disrespect!). If you are a single man visiting Thailand (with friends), you are "a target" far, far more in Thailand than you are in most other countries. This ranges from excessive flirting in more normal environments to basically harassment in night clubs - they will relentlessly go after you. So, maybe American soldiers did not bring prostitutions to Pattaya. Instead, Thai women (and men) were very willing to offer it.
@BangkokPat
@BangkokPat 4 күн бұрын
You can blame western men for the growth of the farang orientated sex industry, not the sex industry overall. But I have never said it is a bad thing, it is there and as adults we should acknowledge that. Show me any video where I have said it was morally bad or that I disagreed with prostitution. I didn't say either that Pattaya was a bad place because of the sex industry, I think they should have left it alone as it was and made their family destination for quality tourists somewhere else, now it's a mix of all three and it's quite awful and overcrowded.

I come to Thailand every year for 2 months. The most complained about numbers make sense. I have observed many times Chinese people misbehaving. Even if it is only being extremely loud, pushing others around physically, or playing their bluetooth boomboxes at full volume around beaches and swimming pools. It even looks like they do it intentionally to bother others. I admire the wonderful Thain people for putting up with it, and I do feel sorry for them.

3:32 "Re-re Khaosarn" is a clever way naming the bar relating to the location but I doubt is it meaningful and relevant to the nightlife fun. Only Thai GenX, Boomers or back beyond understand this word.
