Never been to Bangladesh, pretty much they look like Indians, so my love and hugs for them. I always worried about hunger- so many mouths to feed, but nothing to worry about, this world has bountiful food. Thanks for showing Bangladesh at my home.

Bangladesh was part of India until partition in 1947 - East Bengal. West Bengal is still in India.

Interesting and informative; great camera work, steady sequences with no confusing zooming in and out. You did not add silly music, greatly enhancing the series. Well made and well presented.

I recall hearing that dozens are killed everyday by trains... But a brilliant sequence of 6 films, thank you
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 8 жыл бұрын
Not dozens every day but the death toll is far too high. Most of the deaths would be avoided if people did not wander all over the railway lines with complete disregard for the implications. Roof riding is very dangerous. Many drivers (bus/lorry/car/CMG and rickshaw) ignore barriers and signals at level crossings. Some but very few accidents are caused by failures in the railway infrastructure

Theres a video on youtube of a young Indian boy standing by the trains door with half of his body outside...goes on for ages & we see all the multitude of village/town life as the train speeds on. Then, bang, the boy was hit & is no more,,

Smog or fog?? A inside view of how difficult the fight for survival is for these people. Makes one appreciate our way a lot more. So easy to take it for granted.
@blackthorne57

Good old fashioned low temperature fog. It was very cold, you can see how everybody is wrapped up. Very difficult conditions for the local people, they do not usually experience such low temperatures. One day it was down to +3 degrees C!

I can't believe they live as long as they do with pollution like that.
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 5 жыл бұрын
It is not pollution but good old fashioned fog caused by moisture in the atmosphere condensing at a low temperature. Despite being a country where the tempreature can reach 40 degrees C, during the first few days of my first visit in 2013 went as low as 3 degree C, hence the fog. Bangladesh is a rural nation with very little heavy industry causing pollution. Many vehicles run on compressed natural gas.

Bangladesh does not have its own locomotive construction industry. They do however have full maintenance facilities. The locos in use in BD were built is various countries including their neighbour, India.

I see the dual BG/MG line but from wht I can see, the MG is the one in use. Why have BG if it isn't used?
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 7 жыл бұрын
Broad gauge locos and rolling stock are used mainly in the west of the country and metre gauge is used mainly in the east. The dual gauge track allows through passenger trains and freight can travel between areas without ransshipment. See also my answer to John Shaw, below.

Your prejudices have clouded your judgement Among the various classes are metre gauge: GM B12 built Canada 1953/56 GM-EMD GT18L-2 built Canada 1988 Henschel JT18U6 built Germany 1994/96 DLW/Alco YDM 4 built India 1996 GM EMD GT 18LA-2 built under GMC-EMP licence by Hyundai/Rotem, S Korea 1999/2002 Broad gauge: DLW Wdm2 built India 2001.04

Very interesting again, George. Did you see any metre-gauge trains?
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 9 жыл бұрын
Unlike India, which has virtually eliminated its metre gauge, it is still widespread in Bangladesh. With the exception of one loco at Dhaka, trains in all my videos are metre gauge. Metre gauge locos are numbered in the 2000 series, broad gauge are in the 6000 series. The second number is the class, the third and fourth the serial number. For example 25xx: Metre gauge Hitachi HFA13A, 1400HP, Co-Co, built 1982, Japan, series numbers 2501 to 2518.

+blackthorne57 That's amazing! The trains are so big, with plenty of room on top (!) that I never dreamed they were metre gauge. Thanks for all that, George.

The train is metre gauge. The track is dual gauge, metre and 1676 mm. For an explanation of why dual gauge please see my oher replies.

Why 2 gauges?
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 7 жыл бұрын
For reasons that go back to the nineteenth century, the Indian Sub-continent used broad gauge (5'6", Indian standard gauge) and metre gauge for its main line railways. Usually the gauges remained on separate systems but sometimes especially when they entered a city, dual gauge track was laid so trains of both gauges could use the same station. India has virtually eliminated the metre gauge but Bangladesh still uses both, hence the dual gauge track.

Question for you,how do they figure out who paid,and who did not,on those crowded trains,and do the people on top,ride for free,just askin'
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 8 жыл бұрын
The very overcrowded trains from the festival are provided free by the government. In theory a ticket is required for all normal trains including tge Silk City Express but in practice many travel for free. I suppose it is regarded as a public service for very poor people.

Pete Smith I traveled from Dhaka to Natore in one of those crowded trains. The tickets cost 250 Taka (3 USD) per person. But, due to corruption the tickets were sold in Black and it cost me 500 Taka (6 USD). Whether it's 250 or 500 both are too expensive for the poor. So they just ride without ticket. The conductor only asks for ticket to the sitted. Also, just because you have ticket doesn't mean you'll get to sit. When I got to my sit an elderly gentleman without a ticket had already captured it. I had to stand for about half an hour until he got down. Sitting wasn't much better either because the sits were very uncomfortable. Also, going to the toilet was very difficult because people were sleeping on the floor. It was night train.
